Embracing the Light: Overcoming Unbelief in Christ

Summary

In the Gospel of John, chapter 8, verse 13, the Pharisees challenge Jesus, accusing Him of bearing false witness about Himself. This confrontation follows Jesus' profound declaration, "I am the light of the world," a statement that encapsulates the essence of the Gospel and offers hope to a world shrouded in darkness. Jesus presents Himself as the solution to humanity's deepest problems, offering salvation and transformation to those who believe in Him. Despite this, the Pharisees respond with skepticism and hostility, ultimately leading to their plot to crucify Him. This reaction is not just a historical account but a reflection of the ongoing rejection of Christ in today's world.

The sermon explores the perplexing nature of unbelief, highlighting that it is not merely an intellectual or cultural issue but a profound spiritual problem rooted in humanity's rebellion against God. The Pharisees' response to Jesus is emblematic of a broader human tendency to reject divine truth due to prejudice, spiritual blindness, and a reliance on human reason over divine revelation. This rejection persists despite the evidence of Christ's resurrection, the fulfillment of His prophecies, and the transformative power of His message throughout history.

The sermon challenges listeners to examine their own hearts and attitudes towards Christ. It calls for a recognition of spiritual blindness and the need for a new birth through the Holy Spirit. The message is clear: true understanding and acceptance of Christ require humility, a willingness to embrace divine revelation, and a departure from the limitations of human reasoning. The invitation is extended to all to believe in Jesus, follow Him, and experience the light and life He offers.

Key Takeaways:

- The Profound Nature of Unbelief: Unbelief is not merely an intellectual stance but a deep-seated spiritual issue rooted in humanity's rebellion against God. It is a blindness that prevents individuals from recognizing the truth and glory of Christ. This spiritual condition requires divine intervention for true understanding and acceptance. [16:13]

- The Danger of Prejudice: The Pharisees' rejection of Jesus was driven by a deep-seated prejudice that blinded them to His divine nature and message. This prejudice is a common barrier to faith, as it leads individuals to dismiss the truth without genuine consideration. Recognizing and overcoming such biases is crucial for spiritual growth. [19:04]

- The Limitations of Human Reason: Relying solely on human reason and understanding can lead to the rejection of divine truths that transcend human comprehension. True faith requires acknowledging the limitations of human intellect and embracing the revelation of God through Christ. [30:25]

- The Necessity of Spiritual Rebirth: Jesus emphasized the need for spiritual rebirth to truly understand and enter the kingdom of God. This rebirth is a work of the Holy Spirit, transforming individuals from within and enabling them to perceive spiritual realities. [36:02]

- The Urgency of Belief: The message of Christ remains as relevant today as it was in His time. The call to believe in Him and follow Him is urgent, as it offers the only true solution to the darkness and confusion of the world. Embracing this call leads to a transformed life and eternal hope. Devotional

Day 1: Unbelief as Spiritual Blindness
Unbelief is not just a matter of the mind; it is a profound spiritual blindness that prevents individuals from seeing the truth and glory of Christ. This blindness is rooted in humanity's rebellion against God, a condition that requires divine intervention for true understanding and acceptance. The Pharisees' skepticism towards Jesus, despite His miracles and teachings, exemplifies this spiritual condition. They were unable to recognize Jesus as the light of the world because their hearts were hardened. Today, this same spiritual blindness can prevent people from experiencing the transformative power of Christ. It is essential to seek God's help to open our eyes and hearts to His truth. [16:13]

Ephesians 4:17-18 (ESV): "Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart."

Reflection: In what areas of your life might you be spiritually blind, and how can you invite God to open your eyes to His truth today?

Day 2: Overcoming Prejudice to Embrace Truth
The Pharisees' rejection of Jesus was driven by deep-seated prejudice, which blinded them to His divine nature and message. This prejudice is a common barrier to faith, as it leads individuals to dismiss the truth without genuine consideration. Overcoming such biases is crucial for spiritual growth and understanding. Prejudice can manifest in various forms, such as cultural, intellectual, or emotional biases, which prevent us from fully embracing the truth of Christ. Recognizing these biases and actively working to overcome them allows us to experience the fullness of God's revelation and love. [19:04]

James 2:1-4 (ESV): "My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, 'You sit here in a good place,' while you say to the poor man, 'You stand over there,' or, 'Sit down at my feet,' have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?"

Reflection: What prejudices or biases might be hindering your relationship with Christ, and how can you actively work to overcome them today?

Day 3: Embracing Divine Revelation Over Human Reason
Relying solely on human reason and understanding can lead to the rejection of divine truths that transcend human comprehension. True faith requires acknowledging the limitations of human intellect and embracing the revelation of God through Christ. The Pharisees' reliance on their own understanding prevented them from accepting Jesus' message. In contrast, embracing divine revelation allows us to experience the fullness of God's wisdom and love. It requires humility and a willingness to trust in God's greater plan, even when it surpasses our understanding. [30:25]

1 Corinthians 1:25 (ESV): "For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men."

Reflection: In what ways are you relying on your own understanding rather than seeking God's revelation, and how can you begin to trust in His wisdom today?

Day 4: The Necessity of Spiritual Rebirth
Jesus emphasized the need for spiritual rebirth to truly understand and enter the kingdom of God. This rebirth is a work of the Holy Spirit, transforming individuals from within and enabling them to perceive spiritual realities. Without this transformation, one remains spiritually blind and unable to fully grasp the truth of Christ. Spiritual rebirth is not a one-time event but an ongoing process of renewal and growth in the Holy Spirit. It requires a willingness to surrender to God's work in our lives and to be open to His transformative power. [36:02]

Titus 3:5-6 (ESV): "He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior."

Reflection: How can you invite the Holy Spirit to renew and transform your heart today, and what steps can you take to nurture this spiritual rebirth?

Day 5: The Urgency of Belief in Christ
The message of Christ remains as relevant today as it was in His time. The call to believe in Him and follow Him is urgent, as it offers the only true solution to the darkness and confusion of the world. Embracing this call leads to a transformed life and eternal hope. The urgency of belief is not just about securing eternal life but also about experiencing the fullness of life that Christ offers here and now. It is an invitation to step out of darkness and into the light, to live a life of purpose and joy in Christ. [50:23]

2 Corinthians 6:2 (ESV): "For he says, 'In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.' Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation."

Reflection: What is holding you back from fully committing to Christ today, and how can you take a step of faith to embrace His call in your life?

Quotes

Here are the 12 selected quotes:

- "Here Comes one who says that not only has he light but he is the light, and that nobody need remain any longer in a state of misery or unhappiness or uncertainty they have but to believe on him and follow him and they'll find that there are new men and women in a new world still the same materially but new to them everything transformed old things passed away All Things become new." [00:02:34]

- "The world is still a place of Darkness as it was in his time you know nearly 2,000 years of passing since this he described the world as a place of Darkness he that followeth me he so shall not walk in darkness he says you are in darkness as you are but you needn't stay there the world he says is a place of Darkness he's come as light into the darkness and the world is still Darkness." [00:05:53]

- "Well then the question is why does anyone reject it what was the matter with these Pharisees yes what's the matter with all who still reject it what's the matter with anybody in this congregation who isn't a Christian what's the matter with any man or woman who is still trying to Grapple with these problems only to fail always ever whether they be intellectual or moral political or anything else what's the matter well now that is the problem that we must discuss together." [00:08:15]

- "Unbelief according to this book according to this blessed person is really something that is the result of men's original Rebellion against God it's the deepest thing of all it's not merely intellect it's not merely heart condition it isn't merely a matter of the will it isn't matter of surroundings or of circumstances now says the Bible the fact that this is the 20th century is completely irrelevant because there were unbelievers 100 years ago." [00:16:13]

- "The Pharisees therefore said unto him thou bearest record of thyself thy record is not true what's happening well you see it's like a a barrister in court isn't it he has a great principle of law involved in a case some big matter is that issue but this man gets up he doesn't deal with this great problem he's got some little point of order there are people like that often in debates and in public meetings are there not they they they they're always concerned about the mechanics some little odd point of procedure or something something tremendous is being held before they don't seem to see that it's some point of order that they're taking up." [00:20:08]

- "You judge after the flesh that's the trouble Jesus answered and said unto them though I bear record of myself yet my record is true for I know whence I came and whether I go but you cannot tell whence I come and whether you judge after the flesh that's it what does it mean now this is is really of central importance it means it in it two things the first is this he was stating it as an actual fact he says you are judging me after the flesh by which he meant this you are looking at me but instead of listening to what I say to you instead of paying heed to my claim that I and I alone am the light of the world and that I can deliver you out of Darkness instead of listening to that and allowing that to stir within you and to move you and to make you ask well now then how and ask me to give you a further light and instruction instead of that you're rejecting me and you're doing so because you're judge after the flesh what you are saying is this light of the world and the only light of the world to follow him no longer to walk in darkness but to have the light of life and you're only Jesus of Nazareth." [00:30:25]

- "You judge after the flesh and that's why you don't believe but you know it means a second thing and I want to emphasize this you judge after the flesh what's he mean well he means that their whole way of thinking their whole process of thinking was such that they couldn't possibly believe in him you think you reason you understand he said after the flesh only what does he mean well he meant exactly what he meant when he was speaking to Nicodemus there's the classical example isn't it Nicodemus comes at night and puts his question and our Lord says verily verily I say unto thee except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of God." [00:35:55]

- "It is because no men can ever arrive at a knowledge of God that God sent his only son into this world to reveal him it is the only way but it shows itself in a second way which is this that human reason and understanding are made Supreme and there's no doubt about this today that is what is being done by all who are unbelievers unless it's being done by many who call themselves Christian who thereby deny the very first statement of this gospel which is men's toal inability and the absolute need of Revelation from beginning to end." [00:42:34]

- "The ultimate cause of all this you see is nothing but what the Bible calls spiritual blindness spiritual deadness that was the trouble with these men they lacked a spiritual faculty their own reason their own knowledge their own eyesight they're looking impossible there a materialism the human the carnal this world and they know nothing about the other one and so I say they always miss the most glorious things that he ever said here he is talking to them about his father if he had known me he should have known my father also and then they say where is thy father he tells them marvelous things about himself about how he left the courts of heaven and humbled himself and made himself of no reputation to be born as a man saying I am not of this world and this is the reply who are thou cynicism sarcasm and Scorn and when he tells them about his death do you remember their reaction when he told them about his death they said what's he mean by this what's he mean by saying that whether I go he cannot come will he kill himself is he going to commit suicide you he he the Son of God telling them look here I've come from Heaven to Earth in order to lay down my life for you and for your sins it's the biggest thing he ever said he couldn't say a greater thing it's the most amazing thing even he ever did and yet he has the respon is he going to commit so will he kill himself because he say whether I go you cannot come well there's only one EXP explation of this my friends it's complete spiritual blindness it is complete spiritual deadness they lack a spiritual faculty these spiritual things are no longer real to them they're this world flesh only and dead to the glories of God and the spiritual realm." [00:46:53]

- "Do you believe on the Son of God do you believe that Jesus of Nazareth was the Lord of Glory do you really believe that he is the light of the world have you really believed on him and have you followed in me says he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of Life have you got it have you found that you know God in Jesus Christ do you know that your sins are forgiven because he died for you have you got that light have you got a new nature are you aware of a new life and another Power working within you drawing you from the world drawing you to him are you aware of the fact that you're a new man what is he to you he stands before you still he says the same thing have you believed in him have you given yourself to him have you taken up your cross and have you walked after him do you believe in Jesus Christ that's the question what are you like these men flipped up by this I don't understand it I I can't explain is that your attitude still have you missed the big the glory and are you still dealing with your little minu have you felt something of this power have you seen something of this Glory this glorious message my dear friend I'm pressing my question for this reason there is a sense of course in which one can understand these people these Pharisees I mean this you know there is no excuse for them but at any rate there is this much to be said for them they rejected him before he died and before his resurrection they were looking at him in the days of his flesh in the days of his humiliation in the days when he made himself of no reputation there was no excuse even then because there were others there these deciples and others in exactly the same position but they believed on him there was no excuse but in a sense I say oh one could put up some kind of defense for them but you can't say that any longer since then he has died upon that cross amazing the Centurion who stood by and said verily this was the son of God the resurrection has happened since the day of Pentecost has happened since with the shedding of the Holy Ghost the founding of the church the whole centuries of Christian teaching and the story of the Christian church are staring you in the face the great revivals all that Christianity has meant to the individual throughout the running centuries all that is against you and do you know I sometimes feel that one of the things that will damn the unbeliever most of all at the bird of judgment is this the Prophecies of Jesus Christ that have since been verified because you remember what he said he prophesied the destruction of Jerusalem he told them it was going to be destroyed that the temple was going to be flattened and that the city of Jerusalem was going to be destroyed and that the Jews his own people were going to be cast among the Nations he prophesied that you know nearly 40 years before it came to pass they didn't believe it they ridiculed it but it happened now I say these facts of History are important a70 and the destruction of Jerusalem and all that has happened to the Jews ever since is an absolute verification of the teaching and the prophecy of this man who said I am the light of the world there it is standing before you the preservation of the Jews as a separate race I believe is a standing testimony to the same event facing you but let me put it like this I believe the state of the world this very evening is one of the greatest proofs of all that Jesus Christ is the light of the world how is there somebody well like this he he always said that this is an evil world he has never said what the politicians and The Poets and the philosophers have always said that this world was going to get better and better he never said it he said the exact opposite he said there shall be wars and rumors of wars he said that the last days were going to be very terrible days confusion earthquakes pestilences he said all this famines troubles people fighting one another against that's the picture he painted he even said this he said when the son of man is come shall he find the faith on the earth even prophesied that his own cause would have dwindled almost to nothing at the end far from growing and developing and getting better and better and the church becoming greater and greater he said the exact opposite he painted a very dark picture of the future history of mankind and especially just before the end and if you don't see all that being verified and fulfilled in the world as it is this evening there's only one explanation it is total spiritual blindness it is sheer inability to face the facts it is to be blinded by prejudices and preconceived notions and ideas have you seen him have you you seen and known that this is the light of the world the Son of God the Savior the Redeemer the Lord have you believed on him have you gone after him are you walking after him are you beginning to see the light and do you want more and more if you do God bless you if you don't well again I say look at yourself as you see yourself depicted in these Pharisees see the real cause and explanation of it all see that you're spiritually dead see that you lack a spiritual optic nerve see that you're paralyzed in Your Vision see that you need new life new power you need to be born again you need the action of the spirit of God upon you see your appalling blindness as you look at them and fall before God repent acknowledge your Darkness your blindness ask him to have mercy upon you and to open your eyes and if you do that he will hear you he will answer you you will find that you've got new life and you'll see that Christ is the savior of the world and your own personal Savior and you'll begin to enjo the new life of the new man in Christ Jesus."
