We are so glad that all of you are here today this important weekend, this important Sunday that we honor and celebrate the life and ministry of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. And we also sit just a day before inauguration of a power shift, a change in our leadership in our country. And so we want to come into this time, into this worship mindful that some of us are super excited, and some of us are disappointed, and that happens every four years or every eight years. It just happens. But no matter what, we want to be a people of prayer. [00:12:03] (43 seconds)

And it is often this guiding light that is with us every single day of our life here on earth. As Christians, Jesus is our guiding light. And we've often heard, we've heard Jesus referred to as light of the world. You've heard that before, right? We've heard Jesus. Jesus referred to as light in the darkness. You've heard Jesus referred to as that before. We've heard Jesus referred to as light that gives light to all who believe. [00:50:47] (39 seconds)

It's a theme that emerges again into the New Testament, and it goes all the way into the Gospel of John in the revelation of Jesus the Christ, who is proclaimed as the true light that gives light to everything. Everyone and anyone who believes. Now this isn't just a metaphorical illumination, but a profound reality that can brighten the darkest winter seasons of our own lives. [00:53:41] (37 seconds)

John's message begins by taking us back to the very beginning, to the very essence of existence, to the very beginning, to the very beginning of our lives. He was the source of life. And this life was the light for all of humankind. This light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not, will not, cannot overcome it. That's one of the best Bible verses around. This light shines in the darkness. This light shines in the darkness. And the darkness has not overcome it. [00:54:18] (45 seconds)

This is the light that can never be dimmed in any of our life's challenges. It's a light that endures through through every single season of our life, reassuring us that we are never alone in our struggles. God's light in Jesus is always with us. Now I wonder, I wonder if I were to ask you to think of a moment that you might connect with that woman who sat there in that special service that day. [00:58:23] (43 seconds)

Every single human being has a longing to be in the light of Jesus Christ. That is how God created us to be. That's why. That's why we are here today. We want to hear the good news of the light of the world. We want to hear the good news, the gospel of Jesus Christ. And if we look at verse 16. Oh, am I going to share with you some good news. Verse 16. Out of His fullness, we have all received grace in place of grace. [01:00:20] (44 seconds)

The reverend dr martin luther king jr so eloquently said darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that these words echo the message of john's gospel our reading for today reminding us that it is only through embracing the light of christ and practicing the love that he teaches that we can truly transform our lives and then transform the world as we step forward into this new year we can carry this light of jesus christ with us we can carry this light of jesus christ with us not just as a shield against our own dark times but we can carry it as a beacon to others who might be struggling in the shadows when we commit to being bearers of this divine light of jesus christ we then are extending grace upon grace love upon love and light upon. [01:04:10] (78 seconds)

Holy and gracious god we thank you on this day that we can come into this space and we can receive light for our soul god we thank you that you have given us your son jesus christ that continues to light our souls continues to light our path that continues to call us to keep moving forward a light that will impact our lives and our lives in the future. [01:04:51] (27 seconds)

As we leave this place, may we all leave being lifted up in God's love, God's mercy, and God's grace. Say it with me now. Brothers and sisters, go in peace and serve the Lord. We are about to enter our mission field. [01:09:47] (18 seconds)
