Embracing the Divine Rhythm of Rest
Summary
In today's message, we explored the profound concept of the "Rhythm of Rest" as part of our ongoing series on Unforced Rhythms. We delved into the importance of establishing healthy rhythms in our lives, particularly the rhythm of rest, which is essential for living a life that is full and aligned with God's design. In our fast-paced society, where anxiety, stress, and exhaustion are prevalent, it is crucial for us as followers of Jesus to not conform to the world's hectic rhythms but to embrace the restful rhythms that God has ordained for us.
We began by acknowledging the challenges of maintaining a balanced life amidst the demands of work, family, and personal commitments. Many of us fill our calendars to the brim, treating our schedules like a game of Tetris, trying to fit everything in. However, true rest is not merely about taking breaks or sleeping; it is about spiritual rejuvenation and connecting with our Creator. God, who created rest, invites us to experience rest in Him, as emphasized in Matthew 11:28-30, where Jesus calls us to come to Him for rest.
We examined the biblical foundation of rest, starting with God's own example in Genesis, where He rested on the seventh day after creation. This act of rest was not just a suggestion but a commandment, as seen in Exodus 20:8-11, where God instructs us to keep the Sabbath holy. Rest is not merely a physical necessity but a spiritual discipline that aligns us with God's rhythm.
Furthermore, we explored how Jesus modeled rest during His ministry. Despite His busy schedule, Jesus often withdrew to solitary places to pray and connect with the Father. This teaches us that rest is not just about ceasing activity but about intentional time with God, which prepares us for His purposes.
In our modern context, we are often distracted by busyness and technology, which can hinder our connection with God. We must prioritize our time with Him, creating a routine that includes a Sabbath and daily moments of spiritual rest. This rhythm of rest is not just a suggestion but a necessity for a life that is full and abundant in Christ.

Devotional
I'm ready to provide the 5-day devotional based on the steps outlined. Here it is:
---
Day 1: Embracing Spiritual Rejuvenation
In a world that often equates rest with mere physical relaxation, true rest is found in connecting with our Creator. This connection is essential for spiritual rejuvenation and aligning with God's design for our lives. The rhythm of rest is not just a break from activity but a deliberate engagement with God, allowing His presence to refresh and restore us. As we prioritize this spiritual discipline, we find ourselves more in tune with His purposes and able to live a life that is full and abundant in Christ. [45:36]
"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." (Matthew 11:28-29, ESV)
Reflection: What specific steps can you take today to intentionally connect with God and experience spiritual rejuvenation?
Day 2: The Sacred Rhythm of the Sabbath
God's example of rest in Genesis and His commandment to keep the Sabbath holy highlight the importance of routine and structure in our rest. This sacred rhythm is not merely a suggestion but a divine mandate that aligns us with God's rhythm. Observing the Sabbath is a spiritual discipline that reminds us of our dependence on God and His provision. It is a time to cease from our labors and focus on worship, reflection, and renewal, allowing us to enter the new week with a refreshed spirit and a clear sense of purpose. [54:03]
"Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day shall be put to death." (Exodus 31:15, ESV)
Reflection: How can you incorporate a Sabbath rest into your weekly routine, and what changes might you need to make to honor this sacred rhythm?
Day 3: Intentional Solitude with God
Jesus modeled rest by withdrawing to solitary places to pray, demonstrating that rest is about intentional time with God. This practice of solitude and prayer is not just about ceasing activity but about preparing ourselves for His purposes and aligning with His will. In the midst of our busy lives, we must prioritize moments of quiet reflection and communion with God, allowing His presence to guide and sustain us. By following Jesus' example, we can find the strength and clarity needed to fulfill our calling. [56:43]
"But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray." (Luke 5:16, ESV)
Reflection: What specific time and place can you set aside this week for intentional solitude and prayer with God?
Day 4: Prioritizing Divine Connection
In our fast-paced society, busyness and distractions can hinder our connection with God. It is crucial to prioritize our time with Him, creating a routine that includes a Sabbath and daily moments of spiritual rest. This rhythm of rest is necessary for a life that is full and abundant in Christ. By intentionally setting aside time for God, we open ourselves to His guidance and wisdom, allowing us to live freely and lightly as Jesus intended. [01:00:45]
"Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!" (Psalm 46:10, ESV)
Reflection: What distractions in your life are preventing you from prioritizing your connection with God, and how can you address them today?
Day 5: Living Freely and Lightly
Busyness and distractions can hinder our connection with God, but by intentionally creating a rhythm of rest, we prioritize our relationship with Him. This allows us to live freely and lightly, as Jesus intended. Embracing this rhythm means letting go of the world's hectic pace and embracing the restful rhythms that God has ordained for us. As we align our lives with His design, we experience the peace and freedom that come from living in His presence and purpose. [01:11:07]
"For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, 'In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.' But you were unwilling." (Isaiah 30:15, ESV)
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you need to let go of busyness and embrace God's rhythm of rest, and what practical steps can you take to do so today?

Quotes
1) "It's easy to fall into the rhythms of what everybody else is doing. And almost like maybe this consumer type of mentality, going through the motions or just doing what the world does. But as believers, we have to learn to live life to the full by establishing healthy kingdom rhythms. And the truth is, today, for the rest of our lives, we have to learn to live life to the full. The rhythms that we establish today will have a lasting impact on tomorrow. So the rhythms that you create right now, no matter your age, stage of life, the rhythms that you create right now are going to have an impact on tomorrow. And one of those key components of the rhythms that we need is a rhythm of rest." [45:36] (46 seconds)
2) "Resting, it's not just the answer, it's what you do when you rest that is the key because I think that like we have this idea of what rest looks like sleep is good, taking time away from things and be disconnected is great or having hobbies and things like that but what we need is we just need a spiritual rejuvenation we need rest for our souls we need that true replenishment and you might not even realize it but that's maybe what you've been lacking a disconnecting from everything going on in life in a connection with your creator that's something that we all need and today I really do I hope that you walk out of this place with the encouragement to just really rest the way you are and I hope that you do and I hope that you do it the way that God designed it." [51:14] (49 seconds)
3) "If God needs rest, we need rest. Come on. God gave us this example. If he took time to rest, we need rest. And I love it. He turns this example into a commandment. He gives the commandments to Moses and he says, in Exodus 28 through 11, the fourth commandment, he says, remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you nor your son nor your daughter nor your male or female servant nor your animals nor any foreigner residing in your towns. Everybody. For in six days, the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that's in them, but he rested on the Sabbath. The seventh day. Therefore, the Lord blessed the Sabbath and made it holy." [54:03] (49 seconds)
4) "Rest prepares you for how God wants to use you. I think that the level of impact we wanna be used by God sometimes is measured in the amount of rest that we really have in him. There will always be a checklist. There will always be things to do, but rest. And the truth is, I was telling someone earlier, a better life is a full life, not a busy life. A better life is a full life, not a busy life. And some of us, living a busy life is maybe what's actually preventing you from having a deeper connection with your creator. Having a busy life is maybe what's, what's maybe preventing you from living that better life. that God offers." [58:07] (54 seconds)
5) "A rhythm of rest means to create a rhythm of spending time with God. We have to understand that our time with God is more important than anything else. It's a time to reconnect with our creator, to have that spiritual rejuvenation. I think of this, this analogy, if a phone didn't have access to wireless or a computer didn't have access to wireless data or couldn't connect to the internet, it would be completely limited in what it could do. Or if you think about this, you think of a phone and you have an iPhone and you try to connect it to it with an Android charger, you'll never get that right charge that it's supposed to have. And I think in order to create a rhythm, you have to create a routine. So what's our routine of spending with our creator?" [01:00:45] (43 seconds)
6) "The truth of the matter is you can, but it's what you do in those 24 hours of your day that matters most. Here's the, here's the hard part though. I'm going to, I'm going to lay some stats on y 'all. Okay. Facts will say that you spend about 30 % of your life sleeping. And that's if you get seven hours of sleep. I don't know if we're all getting seven hours of sleep, but seven hours of sleep a night, that's anywhere from 44 to 55 hours a week sleeping. But facts say that Americans spend about 35 hours a week working at least on average, a lot of us less, a lot of us more. I don't know where you fall on that, but that's anywhere from 30 to 50 plus hours a week. And that's anywhere from 44 to 55 hours a week. And that's anywhere from hours a week working. So between work and sleep, you've already eaten up 12 to 14, 15 hours of your, your day. That's 75 to a hundred hours a week between those two things." [01:02:47] (55 seconds)
7) "I think for us as believers this is what we talked about we have to be creating a rhythm of rest we operate differently than the world and we need to be connected to where there is rest psalm 62 1 through 2 says truly my soul finds rest in god my salvation comes from him truly he is my rock he is my salvation he is my fortress and i will never be shaken god's saying i'm your rest there's rest found in me your time with god is more important than anything else but if we're not connecting to the source we'll never fully be at rest spiritual rejuvenation is really what we need we need rest for our souls y 'all we need to rest in the one who created in the one where there is rest." [01:06:31] (59 seconds)
8) "A better life is a full life, not a busy life. And some of us, living a busy life is maybe what's actually preventing you from having a deeper connection with your creator. Having a busy life is maybe what's, what's maybe preventing you from living that better life. that God offers. Proverbs 4, 18 through 19 says, the path of the righteous is like a morning sun shining ever brighter till the full of light of day, for the full light of day. But the way of the wicked is like a deep darkness. They do not know what makes them stumble. If we're being honest, maybe a busy life is that barrier between you and God. And maybe you don't even realize it. But it's saying the way of the wicked is like a deep darkness. They don't even know what makes them stumble. And maybe without even realizing it, the busyness is keeping us from our Lord." [59:02] (63 seconds)
