Embracing Suffering: A Christian Perspective During Lent

Sermon Summary

Sermon Clips

Lent is a time of spiritual reflection. The reason that it was set at 40 days is to identify with Christ being tempted in the desert. We're leading up to the big celebration that is coming up with at Easter. But we want to also identify with the suffering of Christ. [00:02:44]

Jesus came to earth and it wasn't just like there was Christmas and then they fast forward and then we have Easter and the resurrection. There was a whole life that Jesus lived. There's a whole life that he lived. And the reason he did lived his 30 plus years on earth is to understand and to let us know that he understands exactly what it's like to be us. [00:03:29]

Jesus was tempted in all ways yet was without sin. He is understanding what you're going through right now. He was tempted by you know sexual desires. He was tempted by he probably had acne. I always told him he probably had a voice change go on. He probably had you know all kinds of things happen to him. [00:02:44]

Peter is writing to the church in what is now Turkey but was Asia Minor at the time. This is a gentile church and for the most part. And they are starting to feel some hostility from the people around them. By the time Revelation is written in the 90s it went from just a little hostility to they were being killed for their faith. [00:04:12]

Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking. For whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased with from sin. So he's talking about this. He said since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, Christ came to earth and he actually suffered. [00:05:10]

Jesus suffered in the flesh. The wounds that he took whether the physical suffering that he did on the cross was real. It was an actual torturous event that happened to him. But also he suffered in the flesh in that he had his own he had his friends turn on him. [00:06:40]

Jesus did not turn and use the law of the playground. He hit me I get to hit him back. If you've ever worked with kids that's the rule. Well he hit me. Why'd you hit him because he hit me. Jesus didn't use that when they I mean think about it. Jesus didn't judge people. [00:09:54]

Suffering can draw us closer to God and can drive sin out of our life. It becomes a moral imperative. It becomes part of who we are. We draw closer to God. We draw closer to each other. We draw farther away from sin and the sin ceases to have power over us. [00:12:26]

As Christians, we are called to live for the will of God rather than human passions. This often leads to being misunderstood or maligned by the world, but our focus should remain on our eternal destiny with God. [00:15:02]

If you are a follower of Jesus Christ you're swimming upstream. You are not with the culture. The culture says follow your passions. Do whatever you want to do. Love who you want to love. Do whatever you want to do. This is you know you decide. No Don't let God tell you what to do. [00:19:52]

We need to put this in the arms of God and focus on our eternal destiny. We need to be people that are sojourners and exiles. We are travelers in this land but we are not part of this world. And the world hates us for it. Jesus says "They hate me they're going to hate you." [00:29:50]

Let us love those who persecute us like Jesus did. And let us hope God that they someday will become followers of you. But Lord we turn their judgment to them not to us. We're not to judge them God. We leave it to you and we ask this now in the name of Jesus. [00:37:20]
