The Bible is a book about life. It's the most practical book in the world. That's why it gives us such a lot of history, such a lot of biography, just to remind us that it's not some theoretical disquisition with respect to life but that it is an account of life as it has been lived and especially life as it is possible under the blessing of almighty God. [00:02:00]

The main effect of the message of this Bible is to divide people into two groups: those who become the people of God from listening to it and those who are not the people of God. But God's forming a people, and he has a great purpose for these people. [00:04:55]

No one is born a Christian. No one is a Christian by nature. Peter's here addressing adult people. They had lived for some time, but he refers to them as newborn babes. They've only just become this. They were something else, not a people, but now you're the people of God. [00:09:08]

What makes a man a Christian is not that he adds on something to what he was or to what he had before. There are many who think it's that, that a man decides to add on something to what he already was. He remains essentially the same person, but that now he begins to do certain things he didn't do before. [00:12:00]

The whole essence of this change is this: that it is something that is so profound that the only terminology that is adequate in describing it is the kind of terminology that is used here—a newborn babe. It's a birth. The difference between a man who is a Christian and what he was before is the difference between life and non-existence. [00:14:29]

The very terms suggest us that a child doesn't give birth to itself. A child is born, something that happens to it. It isn't the actor; it isn't the one who's operating. It finds itself alive with life. Someone else has given birth to this child. It isn't an action of the child itself. [00:17:51]

It is God alone who can do this. This is a creative act. It's nothing less than that. Oh, what foolish notions we have of Christianity. Fancy a man thinking that he can make himself a Christian, whereas in fact it takes the almighty action of the Everlasting God himself to do the work. [00:24:07]

What is it that makes a man a Christian? Well, it's this: it is the operation of God the Holy Spirit down in the depths and the vitals of a man's being. I'm reminded of the words of the Apostle Paul again. You remember how he puts it in his Second Epistle to the Corinthians in chapter 3. [00:30:05]

The life of God in the souls of men, that is essential Christianity. And therefore, the next thing that I've got to tell you about it is this: that it is, of course, a very mysterious thing and a very marvelous thing and a very wonderful thing. [00:29:00]

God can do something to your soul and do it in the twinkling of an eye that will produce an entirely new nature in you and make a new man of you. You see, you don't become a Christian by a course of teaching. It's God who makes us Christians. This is the one thing. [00:37:16]

The promise of the gospel is that whoever believes in Jesus Christ will not be confounded but will receive the gift of eternal life. This is the assurance of safety and security that comes from being a child of God and a member of His family. [00:52:00]

You can receive this Divine Gift of Life. All you have to do is to see your need of it and renounce yourself and all you've ever done and ever been or ever will be and ask God to have pity and mercy and compassion upon you. [00:52:00]
