Sermon Clips

Jesus invites us to practice his way and I want to show you that in Jesus' life solitude and silence were a vital part of how he lived his life we see Jesus going away by himself before every key moment in his ministry Jesus started his ministry with 40 days in the desert in Matthew 4 he spent a whole night alone praying before choosing the 12 disciples in Luke 6 when he was told that John the Baptist had been murdered he was told that he was going to die but he went away and spent time alone with the Father. Solitude leads us to trust silence is intimately related to trust says Richard Foster if we are silent who will take control if we are silent then we can't defend ourselves if we are silent then we haven't proclaimed our truth one of the fruits of solitude and silence is the ability to let God be God to let God be our justifier to let God be the one we trust in and that trust brings peace it brings intimacy it calms the internal storm. The greatest way for all of us to increase moments of solitude in our lives is to put boundaries around solitude. That monster. If you are not sure if you need some phone boundaries, ask yourself this question. Are you controlling your phone, or is your phone controlling you? Like, what happens when you can't find your phone? Right? Panic mode. [01:06:36] (29 seconds)

One excellent way of practicing solitude that I love is going for a walk with the Lord. Francis Chan, who is an amazing author, a church planter, he's a former megachurch pastor. He says that he has a habit of just going out for a walk and praying, just talking to God, thanking him and worshiping him. Being out in God's creation is an amazing way to connect with him. I think it's kind of cool that in Genesis, in the creation story, it says that God would walk with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, in the cool of the day. And he invites us to walk with him today. And as I'm thinking about this, I think of that old hymn called In the Garden. It expresses the feeling of being alone with God. [01:25:59] (28 seconds)
