Embracing Servanthood and Unity in Christ

Summary

In today's worship, we explored the profound teachings from the Gospel of John, focusing on the final moments of Jesus' ministry. As we journey through Lent, we reflect on the unity of the body of Christ and the global prayers that bind us together. Our prayer today, from our companions in England, calls us to seek a deeper understanding of God, to break free from the limitations of our language, and to love and reflect God's image to a world in need.

In John 13 and 14, we witness Jesus preparing his disciples for his imminent departure. This preparation is not unlike the hectic preparations we make before a journey, but with far greater significance. Jesus, aware of his impending crucifixion, shares essential teachings with his disciples, emphasizing service, preparation, and the promise of the Holy Spirit.

Firstly, Jesus exemplifies servanthood through the act of foot washing, a gesture of humility and love. This act challenges us to lay down our own lives in service to others, finding meaning and healing in the process. Secondly, Jesus reassures us of a place prepared for us in his Father's house, a promise of eternal community and belonging. This imagery of interconnected rooms speaks to the security and unity we find in Christ.

Finally, Jesus promises the Holy Spirit, the paraclete, as our guide and advocate. This Spirit, the breath of God, is our constant companion, offering guidance and comfort as we navigate life's challenges. The Holy Spirit's presence reminds us of God's ongoing creation and life-giving power, ensuring we are never alone.

As we reflect on these teachings, we are called to embrace the comfort and tasks Jesus offers. We are to serve others with love, trust in the future Jesus prepares, and rely on the Holy Spirit's guidance. In doing so, we live out the love of God and neighbor, embodying the unity and grace of Christ in our lives.

This act of love is a powerful antidote to loneliness and depression, as it connects us to others and to God. Jesus' example calls us to serve others with love, reflecting His humility and grace in our daily interactions. [06:50]

"Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others." (Philippians 2:3-4, ESV)

Reflection: Who in your life can you serve today in a way that reflects Jesus' humility and love? What specific action can you take to meet their needs?

Day 2: Assurance in Eternal Preparation
Jesus' promise of preparing a place for us in His Father's house offers comfort and assurance. This imagery of interconnected rooms reflects a community where we are all connected, secure, and cared for. It reminds us that Jesus is actively preparing for our future, and we need not worry about what lies ahead. This promise of eternal community and belonging encourages us to trust in the future Jesus prepares, knowing that we have a secure place in His kingdom. [17:34]

"In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also." (John 14:2-3, ESV)

Reflection: How does the promise of a place in God's eternal home change your perspective on your current worries and fears? What steps can you take to trust more deeply in this promise today?

Day 3: The Holy Spirit as Our Constant Companion
The Holy Spirit, or paraclete, is our advocate and guide, offering spiritual companionship and defense. This presence of God breathes life into us, just as God breathed life into creation. The Spirit's guidance ensures we are never alone, even in times of trial and uncertainty. As we navigate life's challenges, we can rely on the Holy Spirit's guidance and comfort, trusting in God's ongoing creation and life-giving power. [17:34]

"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you." (John 14:16-17, ESV)

Reflection: In what areas of your life do you need the Holy Spirit's guidance and comfort today? How can you invite the Spirit to be more present in your daily decisions and actions?

Quotes

I have given you an example, just as I have done, you also must do. I assure you, servants aren't greater than their master, nor are those who are sent greater than those who sent them. Since you know these things, you will be happy if you do them. [00:02:40] (17 seconds) Edit Clip

Don't be trouble, trust in God, trust also in me. My father's house has room to spare. If that weren't the case, would I have told you that I'm going to prepare a place for you? When I go to prepare a place for you, I will return and take you with me so that where I am, you will be too. [00:02:57] (21 seconds) Edit Clip

it's not just a matter of taking care of those little errands we never got around to it's about making sure that we share the things that most are important to us with the people who are most important to us and this is really what Jesus is doing here because Jesus knows it's Thursday and he knows he's going to die on Friday now he also knows he's coming back on Sunday but that's not something that anyone around him is going to be able to understand so he is trying to get everyone to a place where they can make it through what is about to happen [00:05:43] (40 seconds) Edit Clip

we wear shoes and our roads are not as dirty as what the people in Jesus time we're dealing with today perhaps it is how often do we wash our hands think of all the door handles we touch the other people have touched think of the railings we put our hands on think about the fast food that we eat with our hands our hands have germs and stuff on them and we are frequently washing our hands so what Jesus is talking about here is that usually you either wash your own feet or a servant the lowest prestige status person in the house would come and wash the feet of people and Jesus takes the time to wash the feet of his followers he is serving them and part of what the text says is he lays down a robe and this laying down word in Greek is the same laying down word that is used when Jesus lays down his life for us as he goes to the cross so Jesus is giving up something important of himself in order to serve the people that he is with and I think it's very clear that Jesus calls us to serve as he served we are to lay down our [00:09:08] (77 seconds) Edit Clip

ourselves, lay down our time, lay down our resources, lay down a piece of us, an important piece of us, in order to take time to meet the needs of the people around us. [00:10:24] (12 seconds) Edit Clip

Now, if you talk to psychologists these days who are working with people who struggle with depression and anxiety, one of the things they're discovering is the idea of positive psychology, that when we are doing something positive to help people around us, this helps our mental health. It gives meaning to our lives and helps people work through mental issues that they are working on. What Jesus is saying, therefore, is not just a cultural issue to wash the feet, which may not be relevant to us today, although during our special Easter Vigil worship service on Thursday, April 17th, we will have a foot or hand washing part of our worship service to remember this time. Jesus is not just being literal about washing feet. Jesus is saying, what is the need of the person next to you? And how are you going to lay down a part of your life to support? There are a couple places in the prophets and in sections of the Hebrew Bible where the text is really describing a courtroom drama where God is the judge Satan is the prosecuting attorney the accuser who is saying hey the accused has sinned and deserves punishment and then the paraclete the Holy Spirit is the defense attorney the defense attorney who is guiding us who is standing up for us who is defending us who is with us in our time of accusation so our Holy Spirit is the guide the companion the advocate that Jesus sends to us who is going to guide us to freedom with Jesus now another way of thinking about this is that the Holy Spirit [00:16:24] (50 seconds) Edit Clip
