Embracing Sacred Leadership and Servanthood in the Church
Devotional
Day 1: The Importance of Local Spiritual Authority
True spiritual leadership and authority are imparted through the laying on of hands by the current leader of the local church, not by past associations or previous appointments. This ensures that those who serve in leadership carry the vision and spirit of the house they are serving, fostering unity and preventing division. Submitting to the leadership God has placed over you in your current church is a matter of spiritual order and security, not bondage, and is essential for authentic ministry and service. [37:40]
Acts 13:2-3 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.
Reflection: Is there an area of your life where you are still holding on to past leadership or teachings, rather than fully submitting to the spiritual authority God has placed over you now? What would it look like to embrace the vision of your current house today?
Day 2: Honoring Those Who Watch Over Your Soul
Those who serve under spiritual leadership are called to honor those who watch over their souls, not out of compulsion but from a heart of respect and gratitude. Leaders should not demand honor, but followers should not withhold it, recognizing the weight and responsibility leaders carry for the well-being of the flock. This mutual understanding creates a healthy environment where spiritual growth and accountability can flourish, and where honor is given freely as an act of obedience to God. [39:16]
Hebrews 13:17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.
Reflection: In what practical way can you show honor and encouragement to your spiritual leaders this week, so that their service is a joy and not a burden?
Day 3: Christ at the Center of Every Area of Life
Christ is not meant to be compartmentalized to just one area of life, such as church, but should be at the center of everything—work, family, community, and personal life. When Christ is truly central, every other aspect of life flows from that relationship, and His presence brings order, purpose, and blessing to all we do. Rather than only turning to Christ in times of crisis or need, we are called to make Him the foundation and focus of our daily living, allowing His influence to permeate every sphere. [49:12]
Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you have kept Christ on the sidelines? How can you intentionally invite Him to be at the center of that area today?
Day 4: The Kingdom Value System—Humility Over Worldly Success
The world measures success by achievement, status, and possessions, but the kingdom of God values humility, servanthood, and a heart that seeks God above all else. True success in God’s eyes is found in lowering oneself, serving others, and seeking first the kingdom, trusting that God will add what is needed. When we transfer ownership of our lives and resources to God, He takes responsibility for them, and we are freed from the anxiety and pride that come from striving for worldly gain. [51:26]
Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Reflection: What is one possession, goal, or area of pride that you need to surrender to God’s ownership today, trusting Him to provide and protect?
Day 5: Commitment and Endurance Lead to Spiritual Understanding
There are different types of church members—attendees, endorsers, and supporters—but it is those who are truly committed, who stay and serve even when they don’t understand everything, that experience deeper spiritual growth and revelation. Like Peter, who declared he had nowhere else to go because Jesus had the words of eternal life, committed followers remain faithful and eventually receive understanding as the Holy Spirit reveals truth in due time. Spiritual maturity comes not from instant comprehension, but from steadfastness and willingness to stay connected to the house and its vision. [58:36]
John 6:68-69 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”
Reflection: When you face confusion or disagreement in your spiritual journey, are you willing to remain committed and trust that God will bring understanding in His time? What is one way you can demonstrate that commitment this week?
Sermon Summary
Leadership within the church is a sacred trust, rooted in biblical principles and the spiritual authority imparted through the laying on of hands. True leadership is not a transferable title or a badge earned elsewhere; it is a calling recognized and affirmed by the current spiritual head of the house. When someone desires to serve in leadership, it is essential to receive the spirit and vision of the present house, not to bring in influences or teachings from previous places. This ensures unity, clarity of purpose, and the proper flow of spiritual authority. The act of laying on hands is not just a formality but a spiritual impartation, connecting the leader and the led in a shared vision and responsibility.
Honor within the church is a two-way street. Leaders should not demand honor, but those who serve under them should not withhold it. This mutual respect creates a healthy environment where spiritual growth and accountability can flourish. The structure of leadership and membership is not about control or bondage but about security and stewardship. Each person is called to be connected, accountable, and supportive within their local body, rather than operating independently or as a “renegade.”
There are different types of members in every church: attendees, endorsers, and supporters. Attendees simply show up, endorsers speak well of the church but are not involved, and supporters are those who are fully committed, even when they do not understand everything. True commitment is revealed in times of crisis and challenge, and it is those who remain steadfast who experience the fullness of spiritual growth and revelation.
Servanthood is at the heart of Christian leadership. Isaiah received his vision from God while performing a humble task—cleaning the temple. Ministry is not just about preaching or holding a title; it is about serving wherever needed, with humility and faithfulness. Christ must be at the center of every aspect of life—church, family, work, community, and personal life. When Christ is central, everything else finds its proper place.
The world’s value system equates success with achievement and recognition, but the kingdom of God values humility, lifelong learning, and service. True success in God’s eyes is found in going lower, not higher, in transferring ownership of all we have to Him, and in seeking His wisdom above material gain. When we humble ourselves and put Christ at the center, God adds blessings we did not even ask for, and He protects what belongs to Him.
Key Takeaways
1. Spiritual Authority Is Local and Relational Leadership within the church is not a universal credential but a local appointment. Spiritual authority is imparted through the laying on of hands by the current leader, ensuring that those who serve carry the vision and spirit of the house they are in. Bringing in outside influences or insisting on recognition based on past roles disrupts unity and undermines the unique calling of the local body. [33:20]
2. Honor Flows Freely When Rooted in Mutual Respect True honor in the church is not something leaders should demand, nor should followers withhold it. When honor is freely given and received, it creates an atmosphere of trust and spiritual safety. This mutual respect is essential for healthy leadership and for the flourishing of every member under spiritual care. [39:16]
3. Servanthood Precedes Revelation and Promotion Isaiah’s encounter with God came while he was performing a humble task, reminding us that God often meets us in our service, not our status. Ministry is not about titles or recognition but about faithfulness in whatever task is at hand. When we serve with humility, God entrusts us with greater revelation and responsibility. [46:38]
4. Christ Must Be Central in Every Sphere of Life Rather than compartmentalizing faith, Christ should be at the center of our work, family, community, church, and personal life. When Christ is central, every area of life is aligned with His purpose, and we experience wholeness and balance. This integrated approach to discipleship transforms how we live and serve. [48:49]
5. Kingdom Success Is Found in Humility and Surrender The world measures success by achievement and recognition, but in God’s kingdom, true success is found in humility, lifelong learning, and surrendering ownership to God. When we seek God’s wisdom and put Him first, He adds blessings we did not pursue, and He takes responsibility for what we entrust to Him. This is the path to lasting fruitfulness and divine protection.
Acts 13:2-3 — _While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off._

Sermon Clips
You’re only appointed to the church that have laid hands on you to serve because the only way leaders have ever imported throughout the bible biblical leadership is when they laid hands on them, they laid hands on them and set them out in acts chapter 13 they lay hands on parliament and balance and paul in acts chapter 1 they laid hands on matthias to replace judas, they laid hands on them to be among them. When you’re no longer among them, then you’re no longer recognized as being one of them, because you’re no longer among them. [00:33:36]
But now to serve here you need to be made an elder here, because you need your pastor to lay hands on you your current pastor not the pastor you were at five churches before. I don’t need to come to the leadership class I’ve been a leader for 20 years, really, but it wasn’t here it was there, where but we were taught where we were, yeah that’s fine but you wasn’t under this teaching, and now you’re saying you want to these sheep, so now you need to be instructed in what’s happening in this house, not what you learned from that house, because if what you learned in that house was so good you need to be still there. [00:34:26]
Don’t bring that stuff over here, because leadership here is not leadership fair. Why do I got to go to leadership class, I’ve been a leader for a long because you weren’t a leader in this house, and because you need the spirit of this leader. Well so I think in second corinthians chapter one maybe it’s first corinthians chapter one where there was so much division and they were current on about who baptized them and paul said I’m glad I ain’t baptized none of you, and they were claiming their ownership by who laid hands on them. [00:35:12]
Some say I’m on peter some say of this one some saying of christ because you are connected by who laid hands on you. So don’t come in here with somebody else’s spirit, that’s why we appoint leaders in each house because when you decide you’re going to be a part of this house the head man must lay hands on you or the whatever the set gives the house is the head man or the head woman I’m not arguing over men and women leadership that’s a mute issue people get all crazy arguing over stuff they don’t make sense, so whatever your hit or set leader is that person needs to lay hands on you because you are to operate with their spirit. [00:36:02]
And it comes through the laying one of hands and the signing of documents that authenticate you, that you’re a part of calvary, you’re a part of power faith, you’re a part of first baptist you’re a part of whatever house that you have signed to be faithful to, then you must sign off we’re getting hands laid on to you from the head of that house. Is that clear, don’t come in here with somebody else’s spirit, trying to operate in my house with another leader’s spirit, you coming around and just want to be a member that’s fine but if you want to be in leadership I need to lay hands on you because I need to impart what’s so you can get the vision of my house, not come here with some cross vision from somewhere else. [00:36:57]
If you said the lord let you here, then submit to what’s here. You cannot be authenticated at large it just doesn’t happen, your credentials you need to you heard what that announcement just said a while ago and you weren’t from this area she’s giving you authority now to say just say that you know bishop smith you want to go to the prayer breakfast and you’re not from this area just so you know bishop smith that’s just a courtesy, but if you say you want a bishop smith’s ministers, and you don’t do stewardship here, you don’t attend here, you’re not submitted here, can you learn, amen. [00:38:04]
It’s not a matter of bondage, it’s a matter of security, you’re scared because they watch over your soul, you know and in hebrews 13 and 8 you know those that watch over you yeah, here’s what the double understanding in greek is, those in leadership should not demand honor but those who are serving under leadership should not withhold honor, did you hear that, I don’t have to demand it, but you should not withhold it, you should honor those who rule over your muscle not the oxygen turn out the corn, honor them I shouldn’t have to tell you need to serve me, you need to give to me you need to support me no the bible said you shouldn’t do that, that becomes arrogant I shouldn’t have to demand honor, but you should not withhold honor. [00:38:56]
There are there are certain leaderships that are with under the authority of the local church that means that when you use the title elder minister deacons, those authorities are done because a local church has laid hands on you, ordaining you have set you out for those authority, other titles like minister and evangelist are at large titles, now technically you don’t need a title to minister, god’s giving you an anointing you can minister anyway, but if you’re using the titles like elder deacon, um, no deacon of where elder of where you’re associated you’re you’re you’re ordained from some leader who has laid hands on you, current leader, wait a minute current leader who has laid hands on you, not pass leader. [00:40:10]
You need to be in somebody’s church where you’re held at, you always tell I don’t know I’m on the bishopric you ain’t under me I’m not a pastor I’m telling folks you under me, you turn to me, I want to talk to you no time to me talk to your pastor, I have leaders that ties to me I don’t need members tithing to me members need to tie to their leaders, then leaders tied to me, you don’t sometimes with me sometimes you’re a pastor, besides you’re a church you need to be connected to a local church tied to them, that pastor if he’s a sex connection to me will tie up to me you want to talk to me talk to your leader, and tell folks all the time time to your leader yeah. [00:41:24]
Three types of members, three types of members, get this in your spirit three types of men yeah well, it was a primary secondary you had three types of members, oh now you gotta yeah thank god I know you’re gonna do it that’s why I told you yes earlier about primary and secondary leaders, you got it there you gotta run down now see, and people are followers, they will follow the primary or secondary leader depending on who has the most voice, everybody should be proud of the primary leader, but secondaries need to cause confusion because they’re in the majority, and I can put you in the majority so you can influence people I set you in authority so you can lift my arms. [00:42:24]
He was a temple porter he’s a prophet but his job that day was to clean the temple, so he gets this vision from the lord while he’s ministering, some of y’all think ministry is just preaching, he was cleaning the temple, he was a temple porter, when he says in the year the king is that that I saw also the lord highly lifted up he was cleaning the temple, and he saw the train of god filled the temple, you can’t even get some of you to pick up a broom, isaiah was a temple porter, cleaning the temple going through the pillars and, and suddenly he gets a vision, ah, he was serving, that’s what I mean, in the midst of a humble task, god can give you an illumination. [00:47:22]
All you have to do is do what the leader tell you to do, it’s when you do what you’re being told, jesus said you’re my disciples if you do what I tell you to do, that’s what that notes about servanthood is all about, that you got it’s learning how to serve, the whole idea of servanthood and that’s why I gave it to you so you could understand some things about servanthood and pulling it together so you can get to servanthood I want you to get this last slide in my conclusion and then I’ll let you have some questions before we close out. [00:48:05]
Jesus christ I want you to see your personal life’s involved with these five areas, church family community and work the reason I did it in a circle is because I want you to understand that it’s not priority number one two three or four, it’s putting christ in the center of all of it, christ is in the center of your work he can consider your community he’s in the center of your activities he’s going to consider your family he’s in the city of your personal life christ should be in all of it, you shouldn’t just worry about christ when you come to church, departmentalized some people like departmentalize christ. [00:48:47]
Well I don’t have to deal with christ I don’t want them involved in my family to have a crisis, I don’t want to involve my workload until I lose a job, I don’t need christ involved in my church till we have issues, now if you put him in the center, if he’s the center of your life, then everything else flows around the fact that you have christ. [00:49:27]
The world’s value system is that you study, perform service, and that equals success, that’s the world’s value system I know you can’t see it but at that bottom pyramid is study, the bottom the second pyramid is service, and the top one is success that’s the world’s value system if you study hard, work, you will get success, look at the next one here’s the bibles, the kingdom, value system, if you study, because discipleship is to be a lifelong, learner, lifelong level learner you never get through studying, for all the years I’ve been in the ministry I’m still studying every day I get every morning study scripture I I never I never think I’ve learned enough. [00:50:19]
And you serve all the time I’m always serving, and the success is to get down, not to reach up, for he that humbles himself shall be exalted, all of that is just going to push me down and p in the world’s eye that’s going to lift me up in god’s eye, the other way, if I’m prideful will lift me up in the world’s eye, but will put me down in god’s eye, what shall I prophet a man, if he gains the whole world, and lose his soul, some of us losing our soul over wealth and over prosperity and or materialism, because we think that’s it it’s not that god’s going to hold that for you he says first seek ye the kingdom of god and all these things will be added, not sought after added. [00:51:21]
Solomon said solomon you are so great I’m gonna make you so great you can ask me anything solomon said I just want wisdom to lead your people and the lord said because you did not ask for riches I’m gonna give them, because you did not ask for success I mean see god will give you what you don’t ask for, all you need to do is ask for the right thing, and he’ll see those things that you keep trying to seek after are benefits, and if you take them as benefits they’ll come to you, they’re going to come to you but if you’re seeking them then you’re going to get prideful, you know say you’re seeking after you’re going my my car my house my money my possession god said fine I can’t protect anything belongs to you, but if you transfer ownership, I protect what’s mine. [00:52:24]
The earth is the lord’s and the fullness thereof psalm 24 and the world and they gather everything I have belongs to him, so I say god you’re home, it’s your family, it’s your thing so god has an obligation to protect what’s his, he doesn’t have our obligation to protect what’s yours, the reason why you get losses is because you haven’t transferred ownership, you keep talking my my my my mind, and god say right go ahead yo it’s yours, you take care of it then, but if you give it to me, I gotta protect my my reputation. [00:53:20]
Solomon requested was for god to take care of them when they went astray, and he answers them in chapter seven and says if they humble themself and seek my face then I’ll hear from heaven, I know they’re going to mess up, but I’m the god of the second chance, I’m going to restore them. [00:54:24]
First type of member is an attendee, you might call them visitors no but they’re permanent visitors, all they do is attend, they don’t become involved in nothing, they just attend don’t even want to give you their phone number, they attend these all they do is come, they attendees, second type of member are the endorsers, which means they endorse the church they always oh bishop smith you all know him, man he he does a lot of healing delivery, man we talk about he’s an endorser, I’m endorsing ministers you yeah you go there no I don’t go there but he’s a good man, so you get first type of attendees and the church before church growth expert says only 10 of the people do 90 of the work. [00:55:00]
So you got a lot of folks attend us who are not givers, they don’t give they don’t support, they’re not part of the ministry departments of the church they just attend, so you see all the people coming are they really members or their attendees, you get folks on the street that endorse you like crazy, let’s go on john was an endorser of jesus, he said behold the lamb of god to take away the sins of the world, get in prison he sends a word are you the one, or should we look for another, there’s some folks who endorse you past the girl who never come to support you, oh but the last type of member are the supporters. [00:55:48]
These are the members in john chapter 6 that jesus liked, jesus preached his worst sermon in john chapter 6 when he says I’m the bread of life so why he preached a letter servant because everybody walked away from him he said unless you eat of this flesh and drink this blood, you’ll be no part with me people say he talking about cannibalism we don’t know what he’s talking about, leave it’s not, he turns around look at those who are close to him and say will you also go, peter said I’m bankrupt, until you become bankrupt to your leader, he says whom shall we go, you got the words of eternal life, I got no other options, I’ve sold myself out, those are committed people. [00:56:28]
They’re committed they got no I don’t care what anybody say about you I don’t care what they do about you I it’s something about I may not understand everything you say or understand everything you’re doing but I know you’re a man of god or you’re a woman of god, they said where we going, you have the words, I don’t know what you just said out there, but I know, whatever it is you god’s man, that means people ain’t gonna understand every message you preach, but they know that when you stressed out that you’re a man of god your character, your surface you haven’t last all these years not being a man of god I might understand every sermon but and you’re rightly so you ain’t supposed to understand everything, but you got to believe that god has said what he had to say to your leader. [00:57:20]
I don’t get it but you will in time, just stick there long enough jesus said when he the spirit of truth has come, john 16 and 13 he will guide you into all truth everything I’m saying to you now you ain’t gonna get it but stick around a while, you’re gonna be in a service one day and the holy spirit, you on a message that he preached six months ago you know what I understand that but lord I get it now, have you ever had any get it moments in your church, I mean really haven’t had any get it moments you didn’t get it when you first heard it but suddenly one day you got it, because you stay committed, you will get it. [00:58:08]
