Embracing Rest: The Discipline of Solitude and Worship

Summary

In our fast-paced world, the importance of rest and solitude cannot be overstated. John Wesley, a prominent figure in Christian history, understood the necessity of rest, and this principle remains vital today. Rest is not merely a passive activity; it requires intentionality and energy. Silence and solitude, often perceived as passive, are in fact challenging disciplines that demand our full engagement. When embarking on a retreat or a period of solitude, it is crucial to begin with rest. Many of us live in a constant state of fatigue, bombarded by the relentless demands of technology and modern life. We must recognize the profound changes these advancements have brought to our lives and adjust our understanding accordingly.

The root of overwork and hurry often lies in pride and fear. This may be a difficult truth to accept, but it is essential for personal growth. For many, overwork stems from a fear of inadequacy or failure, while for others, it is driven by pride. As we grow in our spiritual journey, we may find that pride becomes a more significant factor than fear. The disciplines of the Christian faith, such as worship, can be instrumental in addressing these issues. Worship, in particular, helps us to focus on God, providing perspective and alleviating the burdens we carry.

Understanding the gospel and our righteousness is key to overcoming the challenges of overwork and hurry. By aligning our lives with the teachings of Christ, we can find peace and balance. The disciplines of rest, solitude, and worship are not just practices but pathways to a deeper relationship with God and a more fulfilling life.

Day 1: Rest as Intentional Engagement
Rest is not merely a passive activity but a discipline that requires intentional engagement. In our fast-paced world, taking time to rest is crucial for maintaining energy and focus. It allows us to recharge and approach our responsibilities with renewed vigor. Many people live in a constant state of fatigue, bombarded by the relentless demands of technology and modern life. Recognizing the profound changes these advancements have brought to our lives is essential. By adjusting our understanding and prioritizing rest, we can find balance and peace in our daily lives. [01:09]

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." (Matthew 11:28-29, ESV)

Reflection: What specific steps can you take today to intentionally incorporate rest into your schedule, allowing yourself to recharge and refocus?

Day 2: Solitude as a Path to Growth
Solitude and silence are not merely passive states but challenging disciplines that demand our full attention. Engaging in solitude helps us confront our inner thoughts and emotions, leading to personal growth and spiritual development. In solitude, we are given the opportunity to listen to the still, small voice of God, which is often drowned out by the noise of daily life. By embracing solitude, we can gain clarity and insight into our spiritual journey, allowing us to grow closer to God and understand His will for our lives. [01:25]

"But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed." (Luke 5:16, ESV)

Reflection: How can you create a space for solitude in your life this week, and what do you hope to discover about yourself and your relationship with God during this time?

Day 3: Navigating the Impact of Technology
The rapid advancements in technology have fundamentally changed our lives, often leading to a state of constant fatigue. We must recognize these changes and adjust our lifestyles to maintain balance and well-being. Technology, while beneficial, can also be a source of distraction and stress, pulling us away from meaningful connections and spiritual practices. By setting boundaries and being mindful of our technology use, we can create space for rest, reflection, and deeper relationships with God and others. [02:23]

"All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be dominated by anything." (1 Corinthians 6:12, ESV)

Reflection: What boundaries can you set around your technology use to ensure it serves your well-being rather than detracts from it?

Day 4: Overcoming Pride and Fear in Overwork
Overwork and hurry often originate from pride and fear. By acknowledging these underlying motivations, we can begin to address them and find a healthier balance in our lives. For many, overwork stems from a fear of inadequacy or failure, while for others, it is driven by pride. As we grow in our spiritual journey, we may find that pride becomes a more significant factor than fear. Recognizing these motivations allows us to seek God's guidance and strength to overcome them, leading to a more balanced and fulfilling life. [02:48]

"For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ." (Galatians 1:10, ESV)

Reflection: Identify an area in your life where pride or fear drives you to overwork. How can you invite God into this area to help you find balance and peace?

Day 5: Worship as a Source of Perspective
Worship is a powerful discipline that helps us focus on God and gain perspective on our lives. It alleviates the burdens of pride and fear, allowing us to see our affairs in the light of God's presence. Through worship, we are reminded of God's greatness and our dependence on Him, which can bring peace and clarity to our lives. By prioritizing worship, we can align our hearts with God's will and find strength and encouragement for our spiritual journey. [03:53]

"Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand." (Psalm 95:6-7, ESV)

Quotes

but see the other side of that is john wesley went to bed at night you have to get your rest now and rest this this becomes very fundamental because most of these things that we have here are they require energetic engagement they are not passive and you really you might think silence for example was passive or solitude was passive they are not passive they are terribly challenging activities i know that sounds silly just being quiet but try it and you find out how it how you need your energy [00:00:55]

and for example if you go if you do a retreat and you you're going to have solitude for a couple of days i would advise you to start by getting a good rest use the first part of the retreat to really get rested because unless you're unlike most of the people i know you're tired already you know we live tired now we live tired now and we've got all these possibilities for running and listening and all that it's hammering at us constantly all these appeals all these things we can do and so on [00:01:40]

i don't think we have wisely understood our situation in regard to the changes that have come upon us through technology and the growth of all these things that have changed our lives so very fundamentally so let me just uh reiterate that's that's the problem now where does it lead us it leads us back to our understanding of the gospel and of our righteousness overwork and hurry come from pride and fear [00:02:23]

and that's a i mean i'm sorry if i offend you with that but that's i'm talking about i'll put this personally okay everything i can say you can you say i'm talking about me and i'm not talking about you but i find that to be absolutely true is that my overwork comes from pride and fear it used to come more from fear than pride because i used to be more scared than i am now but i'm not as scared now as i used to be so it's more my pride that will make me indulge in over work than anything else [00:02:48]

so what's the cure of that well the disciplines help some some of them are helpful for example worship is a very helpful discipline for pride because in worship we really do bring the god before us as much as we can and as who he is and that helps let's help that helps us see our affairs in perspective and so that takes a great weight off of us [00:03:37]
