Embracing Persecution: A Path to Christlikeness

Summary

### Summary

Today, we delved into the final Beatitude from Matthew 5:10, which states, "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." This Beatitude, like the others, challenges the norms of our culture and calls us to live in a way that may invite opposition. We explored the reality of Christian persecution, both historically and in contemporary times, noting that Christians are the most persecuted religious group globally. This persecution is not just a distant historical fact but a present reality affecting millions of believers worldwide.

We discussed how following Jesus is not for the faint-hearted. Christianity demands courage and resilience, as believers will inevitably face rejection, criticism, and harassment. This opposition can come from various sources, including family, friends, and society at large. However, this persecution is not without purpose. It serves to make us more like Jesus, deepen our faith, and remind us of the eternal rewards that await us.

We also examined practical steps to handle opposition. First, we should not be surprised by it. Second, we should not be afraid, as God's perfect love casts out fear. Third, we should not be ashamed of our faith. Fourth, we need to recognize that the true source of opposition is Satan. Finally, we should refuse to retaliate and instead respond with blessing, following Jesus' command to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us.

### Key Takeaways

1. Persecution as a Path to Christlikeness:
Persecution aligns us with Jesus' own experiences. Just as Jesus faced opposition, so will we. [19:18]

2. Deepening Faith Through Opposition:
Opposition serves to strengthen our faith, much like how muscles grow through resistance. Facing challenges forces us to rely more on God, deepening our trust and dependence on Him. This spiritual "workout" builds a robust and enduring faith that can withstand future trials. [23:37]

3. Eternal Rewards for the Persecuted:
Jesus promises that those who endure persecution for His sake will receive great rewards in heaven. This eternal perspective helps us endure present sufferings, knowing that our faithfulness will be richly rewarded. It shifts our focus from temporary pain to everlasting joy. [25:10]

4. Recognizing the True Source of Opposition:
The real source of our opposition is not people but Satan, who seeks to harm God's children. Understanding this helps us respond with grace rather than retaliation, recognizing that our battle is spiritual. This perspective empowers us to stand firm in our faith without harboring bitterness. [31:07]

5. Responding with Blessing, Not Retaliation:
Jesus calls us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. This radical response not only reflects Christ's love but also disarms our adversaries. It transforms potential conflicts into opportunities for demonstrating God's grace and mercy. [35:24]

Devotional

Day 1: Persecution as a Path to Christlikeness
Persecution aligns us with Jesus' own experiences. Just as Jesus faced opposition, so will we. This shared suffering is a pathway to becoming more like Him, developing a deeper understanding and empathy for His journey. Embracing this reality helps us grow in spiritual maturity and resilience. When we face persecution, it is an opportunity to reflect on Jesus' life and how He handled opposition with grace and love. This perspective can transform our trials into moments of spiritual growth and deeper connection with Christ. [19:18]

1 Peter 4:12-13 (ESV): "Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed."

Reflection: Think of a recent situation where you faced opposition for your faith. How can you use this experience to grow closer to Jesus and reflect His character in your response?

Day 2: Deepening Faith Through Opposition
Opposition serves to strengthen our faith, much like how muscles grow through resistance. Facing challenges forces us to rely more on God, deepening our trust and dependence on Him. This spiritual "workout" builds a robust and enduring faith that can withstand future trials. When we encounter difficulties, it is an opportunity to lean into God's strength and wisdom, allowing our faith to be refined and fortified. This process not only prepares us for future challenges but also deepens our relationship with God as we experience His faithfulness in the midst of adversity. [23:37]

James 1:2-4 (ESV): "Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing."

Reflection: Reflect on a time when a challenge or opposition strengthened your faith. How did this experience help you rely more on God, and how can you apply this lesson to current or future trials?

Day 3: Eternal Rewards for the Persecuted
Jesus promises that those who endure persecution for His sake will receive great rewards in heaven. This eternal perspective helps us endure present sufferings, knowing that our faithfulness will be richly rewarded. It shifts our focus from temporary pain to everlasting joy. By keeping our eyes on the eternal rewards, we can find the strength to persevere through hardships, knowing that our sacrifices and faithfulness are not in vain. This perspective encourages us to remain steadfast in our commitment to Christ, even when faced with significant challenges. [25:10]

2 Corinthians 4:17-18 (ESV): "For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal."

Reflection: How does the promise of eternal rewards influence your perspective on current struggles? What steps can you take to keep an eternal perspective in your daily life?

Day 4: Recognizing the True Source of Opposition
The real source of our opposition is not people but Satan, who seeks to harm God's children. Understanding this helps us respond with grace rather than retaliation, recognizing that our battle is spiritual. This perspective empowers us to stand firm in our faith without harboring bitterness. By recognizing the spiritual nature of our struggles, we can approach conflicts with a heart of compassion and a desire to reflect Christ's love, rather than being consumed by anger or resentment. This understanding also encourages us to rely on God's strength and guidance in our battles. [31:07]

Ephesians 6:12 (ESV): "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places."

Reflection: Think of a recent conflict or opposition you faced. How can recognizing the true spiritual source of this opposition change your response and attitude towards those involved?

Day 5: Responding with Blessing, Not Retaliation
Jesus calls us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. This radical response not only reflects Christ's love but also disarms our adversaries. It transforms potential conflicts into opportunities for demonstrating God's grace and mercy. By choosing to bless rather than retaliate, we follow Jesus' example and open the door for God's transformative work in the hearts of those who oppose us. This approach can lead to reconciliation and a powerful testimony of God's love and forgiveness. [35:24]

Romans 12:20-21 (ESV): "To the contrary, 'if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.' Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."

Reflection: Identify someone who has opposed or hurt you. How can you actively bless and pray for this person today, following Jesus' command to love your enemies?

### Quotes for Outreach

1. "Anyone that thinks that following Jesus is easy is sadly mistaken. Anyone that thinks, man, it's real easy to be a Christian. Christianity is not for wimps. Christianity is not for weaklings. Christianity is not for cowards. It takes a man and woman to serve God. I said it takes a man and woman to serve God. Any wimp can sin. Any wimp can do their own thing. Any wimp can be selfish, but it takes a man and woman to stand for righteousness and the kingdom of God." (36 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

If you recently given your life to Christ, you know what I'm talking about. The moment you give your life to Christ, everybody's not happy and excited about it. Your friends don't want you to change. Your friends want you to stay the same. And when they see your life different, they will begin to harass you." (40 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

I'm talking about the truth, not my truth, not their truth. I'm talking about the truth. When Jesus says, I am the truth. Did you hear me? Jesus is the truth, not a truth, not one of many truth. Jesus is the truth. The moment you begin to take that stand for truth, people will call you a bigot. People will call you intolerant. People will call you all kinds of name derogatory remarks because you're not with them or you don't agree with them." (42 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

And in fact, it will make you more like him. John 15, look at what it says. When the world hates you, this is Jesus speaking. When the world hates you, remember it hated me first. The world would love you if you belong to it, but you don't. I chose you out of the world. That's where, that's why the world would hate you. Hate you. No servant is greater than his master. In other words, you're not any greater than I am. So since they persecuted me, what they will persecute you too." (46 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

Are you holding a gun to your head saying, hey, renounce Jesus or die? Because that's happening around the world." (23 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

### Quotes for Members

1. "So if I were to ask you today, what is the most persecuted group on the planet? I don't know what you would say, but if you don't know this already, it's Christianity. May surprise you. you that Christians are the most persecuted group in the planet today. It doesn't go really reported by the mainstream media. Often it's overlooked. There's a group called International Society for Human Rights. This is not a Christian group. It's actually a secular group who gathers statistics around the world regarding human rights. And they say that between 75 to 80% of all religious groups that are experiencing freedom violation is directed against Christians." (56 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

2. "So what do we do? How do we handle this opposition? How do we handle this harassment? How do we handle people when they come against our Christianity? So I'm going to mention two things that I want to cover this morning, and I believe it's going to help many of us. Number one, write this down. There's a few things that you need to remember when you are facing opposition, things you need to remember. Second thing is you need to know what to do. What do you do or what do you need to do when you are facing opposition? What do you do when they're harassing you? What do you do when they criticize you?" 3. "Opposition actually strengthens your faith. When you are facing opposition, he said, consider it all. Consider it all praise to God. In other words, this opposition is causing you to put more faith and more trust in God, causing you to pray more, causing you to put your faith in God. The strongest believers, let me tell you, are not in America. The strongest believers are around the world that are suffering persecution in greater degree than we are. I'd love to say, man, the strongest Christians are right here in America. But are you in a place where people are holding you down? 4. "Number three, we also need to remember that opposition also reminds me that I'm going to face or I'm going to receive an eternal reward. How many know heaven and eternal reward is coming to believers? It's going to come your way. I just want to tell you that. Don't miss out on the rewards for eternity. And Jesus says this, the rest of this, particular beatitude, let me read the whole beatitude here, Matthew 5.10, because there's more to it. He said, God blesses those who are persecuted because they live for God. The kingdom of heaven will be theirs. In other words, if you live for God, you're going to be persecuted. He goes, you will be blessed when people insult you, persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you. Because of me, Jesus is saying. Rejoice, he said, and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven. For in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you." (66 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

5. "Number four, we need to recognize the source of the opposition. Where is this harassment coming from? What is the source? Because many times we think, well, the source is my coworkers. And I'm here to tell you, it's not your coworkers. It's not your mother-in-law. I know that's pretty tough. It's not, some political party. Okay. That, oh, the opposition is coming from there. Opposition is coming from the culture, from other religion or some competitor. No, you know where the opposition is. It's Satan himself. In fact, Revelation 12, 10 said that Satan is the accuser of the brethren. So you need to recognize the source of this harassment. This source of opposition is actually the devil. The devil hates God. Children. How do you know the best way to get to you to hurt you is for people not to hurt you, but to hurt your children."
