Father as we have gathered again today we look to you and to the help of your holy spirit in instructing our hearts in your ways in your truths that we might discover lord all that you have and all that you have done for us in and through your son jesus christ lord how thankful we are for the vast richness of your grace and your mercy towards us through him and now lord let our hearts be instructed in your ways in jesus name we pray amen. [00:02:16]

Wherefore you are no more a servant but a son god has set forth a son but if a son then an heir an heir of god through christ here in the fourth chapter paul sort of picks up from chapter 3 where he said if you be christ then your abraham's seed and heirs according to the promise heirs of the promises god made to abraham but more than that we are heirs of god through jesus christ. [00:04:34]

I wasn't born naturally as a child of god i was born naturally as a child of the devil it is by the new birth that i have become a child of god so except a man is born again by the spirit a new birth you have no relationship with god relationship with him can only come by birth the birth of the spirit and that relationship that we now experience with god as a son of god. [00:07:03]

For as many as are led by the spirit of god they are the sons of god you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear but you've received the spirit of adoption whereby we cry abba father and the spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of god and if children then we are heirs heirs of god and joint hairs with christ. [00:07:49]

Now abba is the hebrew word for father but it is probably more equivalent to our daddy it's a word of endearment a word of closeness my children called me daddy when they were small as my boys grew up they began to call me dad if they had ever come and said father i would have become suspicious something's wrong uh it was never father i need the car tonight it was dad can i use the car tonight you know it was it was a little more intimate a little closer father seems sort of formal whereas abba is more informal it's it's a very endearing word. [00:09:18]

Therein is the grace of god manifested here he is the eternal god and and yet wanting this kind of close relationship where i can just sort of come and say father or daddy this is what i need i think that abba father sort of shows to us the fine balance that we need to maintain with god father is more or less the respectful title whereas daddy is the intimate title. [00:10:27]

I was not born a son of god but by his glorious grace he adopted me into the family so i am an adopted son god's adopted me into his family our daughter adopted a baby girl a couple of years ago and when they went before the court in order to get the papers all formalized we went with her into the judge's chambers with her family and the judge said to them now you realize that when you adopt this child you become legally responsible for her that she becomes a as much a part of your family as your natural children and if there is at the end an inheritance then she shares equally with the natural children with the inheritance she becomes every much your child as your natural children you understand that are you willing to take that responsibility. [00:13:33]

Now jesus consented to share the inheritance with us paul said if children then heirs heirs of god and joint heirs with jesus christ we're joined heirs with him you know it's an interesting thing and it's a tragic thing that many times an inheritance divides a family as the children are wanting to lay claim to certain of the things that belong to the parents sometimes families get in such bitter fights over the inheritance that they no longer speak to each other they hold on to that bitterness throughout their lifetime and maybe it's over something just as foolish as dad's watch he took it and i wanted it you know and didn't even have a chance he had it before i got there you know and how many times families have been destroyed relationships destroyed because of an unwillingness to share the inheritance someone wants more than their share. [00:16:32]

A glorious thing though about being an heir of god the inheritance is so vast that there's plenty to go around for everybody and if anything should run short god can create it to add on to it so i'm an heir of god paul wrote if i'm a child then an heir he writes here if a son than an heir of god through christ and i don't think that we fully comprehend just all that this entails to be an heir of god. [00:18:12]

What paul is saying is that by the grace of god we can begin now to enjoy the blessings and the benefits of god's riches we sing when we all get to heaven what a day of rejoicing that shall be but you don't have to wait till you get to heaven to begin to enjoy and to rejoice peter wrote whom having not seen you love in whom though now you see him not yet believing you rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory here we are heirs of god joint heirs with christ and through jesus adopted as adult sons to begin to enjoy now all of the blessings and the benefits of being a part of the family of god how blessed we are. [00:27:04]

Because our inheritance is so vast we have no qualms in sharing it with you so we're always out to conscript others to become a part of the family not worried about i'm not going to get my full share because there's more than enough for everyone and thus jesus didn't try to hoard everything but he said come unto me all ye that labor heavy laden i'll give you rest you that are thirsty he said come and drink of the water of life freely he's not afraid of sharing and so paul said we are joint heirs with jesus christ all that the father has given to him is ours heirs together of the grace of god and so we invite you to become a part of the family to share the riches of which there is plenty to go around. [00:30:15]

As many as received him that is jesus christ he gave the power to become the sons of god even to those that believe on his name and today you can become a part of god's family and as you surrender your life to jesus you'll find that there is within just an innate kind of a recognition where you say oh daddy father and that close intimacy as well as that respect of oh my who my daddy is glorious the creator of the universe so the welcome mat is out we'll keep the light on for you just go on back and find that the lord is waiting to receive you to forgive and cleanse and pardon and to make you a part of god's glorious family.
