Embracing Our Identity and Unity in Christ

Summary

Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, especially chapter 3, invites us to marvel at the depth of our new identity in Christ and the profound unity God has created among His people. The first half of Ephesians is a sweeping declaration of what God has done for us: we are chosen, redeemed, forgiven, and brought near by the blood of Christ. This new identity is not just an individual reality but a communal one—Jews and Gentiles, once divided, are now one family in Christ. The “therefore” that bridges chapters 3 and 4 is a call to live out this new reality, letting God’s story shape our story, and to share the grace we have received with others.

Paul’s perspective from prison is striking. He does not see himself as a prisoner of Rome, but as a prisoner of Christ Jesus. His circumstances do not define him; his identity in Christ does. Even in suffering, Paul recognizes God’s sovereignty and purpose, trusting that God can turn even the darkest moments into opportunities for greater good. The very epistle we read today exists because Paul was confined—what seemed like a setback became a blessing for generations.

Grace, Paul teaches, is not a private possession but a stewardship. We are conduits, not reservoirs, of God’s grace. The grace given to us is meant to flow through us to others, empowering us to labor for the sake of the gospel and to draw others into the family of God. The mystery revealed in Christ is that all nations, all peoples, are invited into this family, breaking down every dividing wall of hostility.

The church, then, is not just a gathering on earth but a testimony to the heavenly realms. Our unity, love, and witness display the manifold wisdom of God, not only to the world but to spiritual authorities. Paul’s prayer is that we would be strengthened by the Spirit, rooted and grounded in love, and filled with all the fullness of God. This fullness is not achieved in isolation but together, as the body of Christ. Only in community can we truly grasp the vastness of Christ’s love and grow into maturity.

No circumstance, no trial, no darkness can separate us from the love of God. Rooted in Christ, we bear the fruit of love and holiness, empowered by the Spirit to do more than we could ever ask or imagine. The invitation is to surrender every part of our lives to Jesus, to let Him dwell fully in us, and to walk together in the fullness of His love.

Key Takeaways

- Our identity in Christ is unshakeable and not defined by our circumstances. Like Paul, we are called to see ourselves not as victims of our environment but as those who belong to Christ, living under His authority and care. Even in suffering or confinement, God is present and working for a greater purpose that often extends far beyond what we can see. [01:09:10]

- Grace is a stewardship, not a possession. The grace we receive from God is meant to flow through us to others, making us conduits of His love, truth, and power. This responsibility calls us to actively seek out ways to share God’s grace, knowing that someone else’s encounter with Christ may depend on our willingness to pass it on. [01:13:36]

- The mystery of the gospel is radical unity: all peoples are invited into one family in Christ. The dividing walls of hostility—whether cultural, ethnic, or social—are demolished by the cross. Our unity as the church is not just a nice idea but a powerful witness to the world and to the spiritual realm, displaying God’s wisdom and reconciling love. [01:18:44]

- The fullness of God is experienced through the Spirit and in community. Paul’s prayer is that we would be strengthened by the Spirit, rooted and grounded in love, and filled with all the fullness of God. This fullness is not an individual achievement but a communal reality, experienced as we live, love, and grow together as the body of Christ. [01:28:29]

- Nothing can separate us from the love of God, and being rooted in Christ produces the fruit of love and holiness. Our foundation in Christ’s love enables us to endure trials, overcome division, and live out our calling with confidence and power. The Spirit’s presence empowers us to do more than we could ever imagine, as we surrender every part of our lives to Jesus and walk together in His love. [01:32:52]

### Bible Reading

Ephesians 3:1–21 (ESV)
For this reason I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles—assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for you, how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly... (Read the full chapter together.)

Ephesians 2:14–16 (ESV)
For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility.

Romans 8:37–39 (ESV)
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

### Observation Questions

1. In Ephesians 3, how does Paul describe his situation in prison, and what title does he use for himself? ([01:07:43])
2. According to Ephesians 3:6 and the sermon, what is the “mystery” that Paul says has now been revealed? ([01:18:44])
3. What does Paul pray for the believers in Ephesians 3:14–19? What are the key things he asks God to do in their lives? ([01:23:23])
4. In Ephesians 2:14–16, what does Paul say Jesus has done to the “dividing wall of hostility”? How does this relate to the unity of the church? ([01:18:44])

---

### Interpretation Questions

1. Why do you think Paul chooses to call himself a “prisoner of Christ Jesus” instead of a prisoner of Rome? What does this reveal about his perspective on suffering and circumstances? ([01:07:43])
2. The sermon says grace is a “stewardship” and not just a personal gift. What does it mean to be a steward of God’s grace, and how is this different from just receiving grace for ourselves? ([01:13:36])
3. The “mystery” of the gospel is that all peoples are invited into one family in Christ. Why was this so radical in Paul’s time, and what barriers does it challenge in our context today? ([01:18:44])
4. Paul prays that believers would be “rooted and grounded in love” and “filled with all the fullness of God.” Why is this fullness only possible in community, according to the sermon? ([01:28:29])

---

### Application Questions

1. Paul’s identity was not defined by his circumstances, even when he was in prison. Is there a situation in your life right now that feels confining or discouraging? How might seeing yourself as “in Christ” change your perspective on it? ([01:09:10])
2. The sermon says we are “conduits, not reservoirs” of God’s grace. Who is someone in your life who needs to experience God’s grace through you this week? What is one practical way you can show them grace? ([01:13:36])
3. The unity of the church is described as a powerful witness to the world and even to spiritual realms. Are there any “dividing walls” in your relationships or in our church community that need to be broken down? What step could you take toward reconciliation or unity? ([01:18:44])
4. Paul’s prayer is for believers to be strengthened by the Spirit and rooted in love. What is one area of your life where you need the Spirit’s strength right now? How can your small group pray for you in this? ([01:23:23])
5. The sermon emphasizes that the fullness of God is experienced in community, not isolation. Are you meaningfully connected to the body of Christ? If not, what is one step you could take to build deeper relationships with other believers? ([01:28:29])
6. Nothing can separate us from the love of God. When have you doubted God’s love for you? What truth from Romans 8:37–39 or the sermon can you hold onto in those moments? ([01:32:52])
7. The invitation at the end of the sermon was to surrender every part of our lives to Jesus. Is there an area you have been holding back from God? What would it look like to let Jesus “dwell fully” in that part of your life? ([01:35:31])

---

Close in prayer, asking God to help you live out your identity in Christ, to be a conduit of His grace, and to experience the fullness of His love together as a community.

Devotional

Day 1: Our Identity in Christ Is Secure

Believers are given a new identity in Christ—chosen, redeemed, and united as one family. This identity is not defined by our circumstances, failures, or backgrounds, but by what God has accomplished through Jesus. Even when we walk through valleys or face challenges, our position as God’s beloved children remains unchanged. Paul’s life is a testimony that no prison, hardship, or opposition can separate us from the reality of who we are in Christ. Let this truth anchor your heart today: your worth and purpose are rooted in God’s unchanging love and calling. [01:09:10]

Ephesians 1:3-7 (ESV)
"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace."

Reflection: In what area of your life do you most struggle to believe that your identity is secure in Christ, and how can you remind yourself of God’s truth in that area today?

Day 2: Grace Received Is Grace to Be Shared

God’s grace is a gift that comes with the responsibility to share it with others. We are not meant to be reservoirs but rivers—receiving God’s unearned favor and letting it flow to those around us. Paul reminds us that the grace given to him was for the benefit of others, and the same is true for us. Whether it’s a friend, colleague, or even a stranger, someone needs to experience the grace, love, and peace of God through you. Freely you have received; freely give, so that the legacy of grace continues to transform lives. [01:13:36]

1 Corinthians 15:10 (ESV)
"But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me."

Reflection: Who is one person in your life who needs to experience God’s grace through you this week, and what is one practical way you can extend that grace to them?

Day 3: Christ Has Broken Down Every Wall

Through Jesus, the dividing wall of hostility between people has been destroyed, making all believers one new humanity. The unity of Jews and Gentiles in Christ was a radical revelation, showing that God’s love knows no boundaries of race, background, or status. In Christ, we are all part of one body, sharing in the same promises and access to God. This unity is not just a theological truth but a lived reality, calling us to break down barriers and embrace one another as family. [01:18:44]

Ephesians 2:14-16 (ESV)
"For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility."

Reflection: Is there a “wall” between you and someone else—perhaps due to background, hurt, or misunderstanding—that God is inviting you to help break down in Christ’s love?

Day 4: Rooted and Grounded in God’s Love

To be filled with the fullness of God, we must be rooted and grounded in His love, both individually and together as the body of Christ. Paul’s prayer is that believers would experience the vastness of Christ’s love—not just intellectually, but deeply and personally, in community with others. This love is the foundation for spiritual strength, maturity, and unity. When we open every part of our lives to Jesus and live in fellowship with His people, we are empowered to grasp and display the love that surpasses knowledge. [01:28:29]

Ephesians 3:16-19 (ESV)
"That according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God."

Reflection: What is one practical way you can open your heart more fully to Christ’s love and share it within your church family this week?

Day 5: God’s Power and Love Enable Us to Do More Than We Imagine

God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power at work within us. This power is not just for miracles or bold acts, but for loving the unlovable, forgiving the unforgivable, and living out God’s purposes beyond our natural abilities. The Holy Spirit fills us with love and courage, transforming our weaknesses into testimonies of God’s greatness. As we surrender to Him, we become vessels through which His love and power flow to the world, accomplishing His eternal purposes. [01:34:04]

Ephesians 3:20-21 (ESV)
"Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen."

Reflection: Where do you feel limited or powerless in your life right now, and how can you invite God’s love and power to work through you in that area today?

Quotes

So when the enemy confines us, he comes against us. Let us continue to fix our eyes on Jesus, knowing that he's able to achieve something greater out of that. That pain, that valley, that moment of darkness in that circumstances is not going to hinder the work of God in our life, because God is able to do much more than what we can ask or imagine out of that circumstances. Let us remember that your circumstances do not define you. That moment of difficulties does not define who we are, because our identity in Christ is there for us is there for stay. And today, every church of every generation are reading this epistle. [01:12:03] (21 seconds)  #IdentityBeyondCircumstances Edit Clip

The grace that we receive comes with responsibility. It does not stop with us. We are rivers of living water. It comes in and flow out. So we receive grace and we allow the grace of God to continue to flow. [01:13:09] (19 seconds)  #GraceFlowsResponsibly Edit Clip

We are conduits of God's grace, conduits of God's love, conduits of His truth and light from one person to another. So it's a stewardship. We can sing amazing grace, how sweet the sound. But it doesn't stop that. It needs to go to someone else because someone else needs the same grace. They need the same power, the saving power of God. They need the same truth. They need the Holy Spirit just like you've experienced it. They need the peace of God that passes all understanding just like you have experienced it. They need to experience the love of the body of Christ. [01:13:46] (41 seconds)  #ConduitsOfGrace Edit Clip

But here, Paul is preaching that through the death and resurrection of Christ, we have been washed. We are new people. We are new humanity. We are chosen people, a people of God. The Jews see themselves as a people of God because they are descendants of Abraham. But now in Christ, we are all a people of God. We are all baptized in Christ. We are all a new man. We are all a new creation. We are all redeemed. We have all been removed from our guilt of sin. We are all seated with Christ in heavenly places. We are all chosen before the foundations of the earth. earth, not just the Jews, the Gentiles, the Asians, the Africans, the Americans, the South Americans, those near Antarctic or wherever they are, in every part of the earth, everyone has been called, for God so loved the world. He has called all nations unto him. [01:18:04] (62 seconds)  #OneInChristNoWalls Edit Clip

It's not only that the veil was torn, they all maintained his presence, but the wall among men has also been brought down by what Jesus has done. Hallelujah. What a revelation that men are no more divided in the kingdom and in the heart of God and his love. He has called us to be one. [01:19:35] (20 seconds)  #ChurchManifestingGodsWisdom Edit Clip

God's wisdom is displayed when he brought salvation, when he brought unity in the in the whole family of the earth and reconciliation. And when the church begins to declare this and proclaim this and live this out, this is going to be a witness, a testimony, not just for the earth, but it's going to be a testimony for the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms. The church enforced the manifold wisdom of God, the complete work that was completed on the cross on earth as it is in heaven. And the enemy and the darkness are marveled by what Jesus is achieving through the church. [01:21:29] (40 seconds)  #ChosenForHeavenlyPurpose Edit Clip

We cannot experience the full love of God just individually. We may have an encounter with Christ when the Holy Spirit comes upon us and we feel and are touched by the love of God. But the full expression of this love can only be experienced together with the Lord's people. This love can only be experienced in the body of Christ. Our faith is not a solo journey. Paul is saying you will better grab Christ's love when you live and grow with other believers. [01:28:22] (38 seconds)  #BelongToTheBody Edit Clip

And there's nothing in this world that can separate us from the love of God. Romans 8, 37 to 39. Nothing in this world that can separate us from that love. No problems that you face, no relationship or chaos that you are facing, no sicknesses, no seasons of darkness or difficulties can separate us from His love. Yes, we may go through that trial or that moment of uncertainty, but His love never changes because He is the same yesterday, today and forever. And His love is always there for us. ``Now to Him who's able to do immeasurably more than all we can ask or imagine. He doesn't stop that. But according to His power that is at work within us. How does this power come? It comes from the Spirit. So the more we are filled with love, the love of God has power. The presence of the Holy Spirit enables us to do things beyond what we can ask or imagine. Because there's the Spirit, there's the love, and that is the criteria that God is looking for. The greatest is love. And that enables us to walk into areas and do things that we can never do.
