Embracing Our Identity and Freedom in God's Family

Summary

Today was a special day as we gathered together for our annual Family Day, celebrating the joy of being part of God’s family across all generations. The vibrant flags and the “God has my yes” canvas from our youth reminded us that every age and background is welcome and valued here. We kicked off our new series, “Summer at the Movies,” using the colorful and wild story of Madagascar 3 to help us see spiritual truths about belonging, purpose, and freedom in Christ.

Just as the characters in the movie found themselves far from home, pretending to fit in, many of us have felt the need to perform or pretend to be accepted. But God’s Word tells us a different story. Through Jesus, we are adopted into God’s family—not because we are perfect, but because He chose us. Romans 8:15 and Ephesians 2:19 remind us that we are no longer outsiders, but beloved sons and daughters with a seat at God’s table. There is no need to earn our place; we belong simply because God loves us and calls us His own.

We also explored the truth that each of us is made for a purpose. God’s design for our lives is intentional, and He has given each of us unique gifts and talents to use for His glory. No matter our age or background, we are called to live out that purpose, not in fear or comparison, but in the confidence that comes from knowing we are chosen and equipped by God.

Finally, we looked at what it means to be set free in Jesus. Like Alex in the movie, who realized the zoo was safe but not truly home, we can sometimes find ourselves stuck in old patterns, fears, or shame—even though Jesus has already opened the door to freedom. Galatians 5:1 and John 10:10 remind us that Christ has set us free so we can live fully—abundantly, joyfully, and with purpose. We illustrated this with a simple chain-breaking moment, declaring together, “In Jesus, I am free!”

We concluded by taking communion as a family, remembering Jesus’ sacrifice and the love that makes us one. Communion is a powerful reminder that we belong to Jesus and to each other, and that His love is the foundation of our freedom and purpose.

Key Takeaways

- Belonging in God’s Family: True belonging is not about performance or perfection, but about God’s gracious choice to adopt us as His children. When we say yes to Jesus, we are welcomed into His family with full rights and a place at His table, regardless of our past or flaws. This truth frees us from striving and invites us to rest in His love. [40:03]

- You Don’t Have to Pretend: Many of us have felt the pressure to pretend or perform to be accepted, but God’s acceptance is unconditional. He sees us, knows us, and loves us as we are. Our identity is secure in Him, and we can lay down the masks and live authentically as His beloved sons and daughters. [36:30]

- Made for a Purpose: Each person, young or old, is created with intention and purpose by God. Our gifts and talents are not accidents, but part of His design for us to serve, love, and make a difference in the world. Embracing this purpose brings meaning and fulfillment beyond what the world offers. [47:38]

- Freedom in Christ: Jesus didn’t just save us to survive; He set us free to truly live. Many remain in invisible cages of fear, shame, or old habits, but Christ’s sacrifice breaks every chain. We are invited to step out of bondage and into abundant life, marked by joy, peace, and purpose. [49:31]

- Communion as a Family: Sharing communion is more than a ritual; it is a declaration of our unity in Christ and a reminder of His love and sacrifice. As we remember Jesus’ body broken and His blood poured out, we proclaim that we are forgiven, free, and forever part of God’s family. This shared act strengthens our bond and calls us to live out His love together. [58:35]

Devotional

Day 1: You Were Made to Belong

Every person longs to feel accepted and to have a place where they truly belong. God’s heart is for you to know that you are not an outsider or a stranger, but a beloved member of His family. You don’t have to pretend, perform, or prove yourself to be loved by God—He chose you just as you are, with all your imperfections and past mistakes. When you say yes to Jesus, you are adopted into God’s family, given His name, His love, and a seat at His table. No matter your background or what you’ve been through, you belong in God’s family, and nothing can change that. [36:30]

Romans 8:15-17 (ESV)
“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.”

Reflection: When have you felt like you didn’t belong, and how does knowing you are adopted into God’s family change the way you see yourself today?

Day 2: You Are No Longer a Stranger

God’s invitation is for everyone—no one is left out or left behind. Through Jesus, you are no longer a stranger or foreigner, but a fellow citizen with God’s people and a member of His household. This means you have a place, a purpose, and a spiritual family that welcomes you. You don’t have to earn your way in or meet a certain standard; your place in God’s family is secure because of His grace. Let this truth sink in: you are home in God’s house, surrounded by brothers and sisters in Christ, and you are fully accepted. [40:03]

Ephesians 2:19 (ESV)
“So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.”

Reflection: Who in your life might feel like an outsider, and how can you extend God’s welcome to them this week?

Day 3: You Were Set Free to Live Fully

God’s desire is not just to save you, but to set you free so you can live life to the fullest. Sometimes we find ourselves stuck in old patterns, fears, or shame, even though Jesus has already opened the door to freedom. Like Alex in the movie, we may be tempted to return to what’s comfortable, but God calls us to step out and embrace the abundant life He offers. In Christ, you are no longer bound by your past or by anything that holds you back. You are free to live with joy, peace, purpose, and love—fully alive in Him. [47:38]

Galatians 5:1 (ESV)
“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”

Reflection: What is one area where you feel “chained up” or stuck, and how can you take a step toward freedom in Jesus today?

Day 4: Jesus Came to Give Abundant Life

Jesus didn’t come just to offer us survival, but to give us abundant life. He wants you to experience His joy, His peace, and His purpose every single day. Sometimes we settle for less, thinking we’re only meant to get by, but Jesus invites us to live fully and freely in Him. This abundant life is not about having everything perfect, but about knowing the fullness of God’s love and living out His calling with courage and hope. [49:31]

John 10:10 (ESV)
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

Reflection: What would it look like for you to embrace the abundant life Jesus offers in a practical way this week?

Day 5: Remembering Jesus’ Sacrifice Unites Us as Family

When we take communion, we remember Jesus’ love, His sacrifice, and His invitation to live free. Communion is not just a ritual—it’s a powerful reminder that we belong to Jesus and to one another as His family. As we eat the bread and drink the cup, we proclaim His death and resurrection, and we celebrate the forgiveness and new life He has given us. This act unites us, young and old, as one body, reminding us that we are loved, forgiven, and called to share His love with others. [58:35]

1 Corinthians 11:26 (ESV)
“For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”

Reflection: As you remember Jesus’ sacrifice, how can you share His love and forgiveness with someone in your family or church community today?

Quotes

How many of you think that God only loves perfect people? Raise your hand. All right. No, he does not love only perfect people. He loves each one of you just the way that you are. And you are called his child. You are called his son. You are called his daughter. [00:39:09] (00:00:22 seconds)  #UnconditionalChildOfGod Edit Clip

Imagine being stuck in a cage even though the door is wide open some of us have been there before some of us are free on the outside but on the inside we are stuck in fear shame our old ways of thinking you fill in the blank and jesus did not just save you so you could barely get by he set you free so that you could live and be fully alive with joy with peace with purpose and love. Communion is a special way for us to remember that jesus gave his life for us because he loves you because he loves us so much and so when we eat the bread it reminds us of his body that was broken on that cross and when we drink that cup it reminds us of his blood that poured out so that our sins could be forgiven. Something else that I love is that we are all the body. It doesn't matter our age. God can use all of us from the youngest to the oldest. And it's so exciting to see all of our young ones using their gifts and their talents and sharing what the Lord is doing in their life. [01:02:12] (00:00:15 seconds)  #AllAgesOneBody Edit Clip
