No matter how many times we face disappointment or feel like giving up, God calls us to trust Him and try again. The disciples, after a night of fruitless fishing, listened to Jesus’ instruction to cast their nets on the right side of the boat, and their obedience led to an overwhelming blessing. Even when we feel exhausted or discouraged, God’s voice invites us to keep moving forward, trusting that He has more in store for us if we do not give up. [01:17:56]
John 21:1-7 (ESV)
After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea.
Reflection: Where in your life have you been tempted to give up, and what is one step you can take today to trust God and try again, even if it feels difficult or uncertain?
When the way forward seems unclear and we are unsure of our next steps, God’s Word is our guide. His Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path, illuminating the direction He wants us to go. In seasons of confusion or loneliness, we are called to focus on God’s promises and trust that He will lead us, even if the path is not crowded or popular. [01:05:30]
Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you need God’s guidance right now, and how can you intentionally seek direction from His Word today?
When life gets hard, it can be tempting to return to old habits or ways of living that God has already delivered us from. But God has changed us, and going back is not an option. Even if the past seems easier or more comfortable, we are called to move forward in the new life Christ has given us, resisting the urge to return to what no longer fits who we are in Him. [01:11:05]
Ephesians 4:22-24 (ESV)
To put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
Reflection: What is one old habit or mindset you are tempted to return to when things get tough, and how can you remind yourself today that God has made you new?
Sometimes, breakthrough requires us to make a shift—changing our approach, our thinking, or even our circle of influence. The disciples had to move their nets to the other side of the boat, and it took effort, but the shift brought abundance. God may be calling you to shift your prayer life, your attitude, or your priorities. The shift may be uncomfortable, but it is worth it for what God wants to do in your life. [01:22:48]
Romans 12:2 (ESV)
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Reflection: What is one specific area where you sense God calling you to make a shift, and what practical change can you make today to move in that direction?
God promises perfect peace to those whose minds are stayed on Him. When we shift our focus from our problems to God’s faithfulness, we experience a peace that surpasses understanding. No matter what is happening around us, keeping our thoughts fixed on Jesus brings a double portion of peace—shalom shalom—that steadies us through every storm. [01:30:43]
Isaiah 26:3 (ESV)
You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.
Reflection: What is one worry or distraction you can intentionally give to God today, choosing instead to focus your mind on His goodness and promises?
There is power in the name of Jesus, and no matter what we face, calling on His name brings salvation, healing, and joy. Each day is a gift from God, and we are called to rejoice and be glad in it, not because everything is perfect, but because God has kept His hand on us. Even when life brings trials and tribulations, and it feels like we’re not making progress, we must resist the urge to give up or return to our old ways. Instead, we are encouraged to trust God, walk in obedience, and try again, even when it seems like nothing is working.
The story from John 21 reminds us that the disciples, after Jesus’ resurrection, were confused and uncertain about their future. Peter, in his uncertainty, decided to return to fishing—his old life before Jesus called him. But God did not allow them to succeed in what they used to do, because He had a new purpose for them. Sometimes, God blocks our success in old patterns to push us into the new identity and calling He has for us. We are reminded not to set up permanent residence in places God only meant to be temporary.
Obedience in this season may require sacrifice, loneliness, and a willingness to walk a path that others may not understand. It’s not about God giving us explanations, but about us giving Him our complete trust and obedience. When we listen for His voice, even when we can’t see Him, He will guide us. Sometimes, all it takes is a shift—a change in our approach, our thinking, our worship, or our relationships. When the disciples obeyed Jesus and cast their nets on the right side, they received a blessing greater than they could handle.
We are called to put off our old selves and embrace the new life God has given us. This may mean shifting our habits, our circles, and our priorities. God promises perfect peace to those whose minds are stayed on Him. No matter how tired or discouraged we may feel, this is not the time to give up. Instead, it’s time to try again, trust God, and make the necessary shifts to walk in the fullness of His purpose for our lives.

Whatever I am now and whatever I am not right now, I'm far better off now than I was before I met Jesus. I am far better off now than before he saved my life. And no matter what comes or what goes or who comes or who goes, no matter who likes me, who's mad at me, or any of those things, I've made up in my mind that going back to who I was and doing what I used to do is not an option for me. Be careful who you follow. Because Peter didn't say, come on, let's go preach the gospel and let's go do what God and Jesus had called us to do. He said, no, I'm going back. And they said, well, if you're going back, we're going back too. You've got to be very careful that you don't allow people, even with their best intentions, to lead you back to a place that God had already delivered you from. You can't go back to doing what you used to do because that ain't who you are no more. You ain't built for that life no more. That ain't who you are. You trying to go out there and do things you used to do but you got to remember God has made a change in your life and because God has made a change in your life you got to move in the new you not the old you, boo. When you can't see him, listen for his voice. When you're not sure if it's Jesus leading you and guiding you, listen for his voice and there'll be no doubt it is him that is leading and guiding you when you listen to his voice. [01:19:15] (16 seconds) #ListenForHisVoice
When life gets hard and it looks like you're not going to make it, don't go back to your old self. Don't go back to your old you, but shift what you're doing. Shift where you are. Shift what God and watch what God is going to do in changing your situation. [01:23:12] (16 seconds) #ShiftAndWatchGod
The Bible teaches us in Ephesians chapter 22. It reminds us to put off your old self. Take off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt and deceitful. And be renewed in the spirit of your minds and put on your new self. I love that. Created after the likeness of God in righteousness and holiness. I came to tell somebody it's time to change. It's time to give God another try. It's time to put on your new self. It's time to walk in your new. [01:24:07] (42 seconds) #PutOnTheNewSelf
Here's the promise God said I will keep you in perfect peace when your mind is stayed on me when you shift what you think about you'll find that you have perfect peace we learned in Bible study on Tuesday that perfect peace in the translation in the Hebrew is shalom shalom peace peace it is a double peace letting you know it's this peace of perfect peace that when I think about Jesus and all that he's done for me no matter what happens I'm good.
