Embracing Mercy: Overcoming Judgment in Faith

In today's message, I shared my recent experiences in India, where I met with 130 elders from our churches. It was a time of refreshing fellowship and preparation for the challenges ahead, especially given the religious climate in India. As we strive to uphold God's highest standards, we must be vigilant against the danger of becoming judgmental. This is a significant risk for churches like ours that emphasize holiness. The greatest danger is not external persecution but the internal tendency to judge others who do not meet our standards.

Reflecting on our church's history, when we built our first building in India, we chose to display the verse, "Be merciful to others just as God has been merciful to you," as a constant reminder to avoid judgmentalism. Jesus, in the Sermon on the Mount, set incredibly high standards, equating anger with murder and lust with adultery. Yet, He immediately warned against judging others. This juxtaposition highlights the importance of mercy over judgment.

The Pharisees, despite their strict adherence to the law, were quick to judge and criticize, even Jesus. This serves as a warning to us. We must not fall into the trap of being critical of others, especially those who may be better than us in areas we cannot see. Jesus emphasized mercy over sacrifice, teaching that compassion is greater than any religious offering. This is a profound lesson for us, as we often admire sacrifice but may overlook the importance of mercy.

In our interactions, we should be 365 times more merciful than we are strict, reflecting the balance of grace and truth. Judgment will be merciless to those who show no mercy, but mercy will triumph over judgment. This is a powerful reminder of the importance of mercy in our lives. As we seek to grow spiritually, let us eliminate judgmental attitudes and embrace mercy, following the example of Christ.
