Embracing Long-Suffering: Trusting God's Eternal Plan

Summary

In today's message, we explored the profound concept of long-suffering as a fruit of the Spirit, emphasizing the importance of patience and trust in God's eternal plan. We began by acknowledging that suffering is an inevitable part of life, yet it is through these trials that we are called to develop patience and endurance. This patience is not passive but an active trust in God's timing and purpose, even when circumstances are challenging.

Reflecting on Jeremiah 29:11, we delved into the historical context of the Babylonian exile, where the Israelites faced a prolonged period of hardship due to their disobedience. This exile serves as a powerful reminder that our trials are temporary, but God's purpose is eternal. The Israelites' journey illustrates the human tendency to forget God during prosperous times, only to seek Him when difficulties arise. This cycle of forgetting and remembering God is a lesson for us to remain steadfast in our faith, regardless of our circumstances.

We also discussed the importance of seeking peace and prosperity in the places where God has placed us, even if they are not where we desire to be. By praying for the success of our leaders and communities, we align ourselves with God's broader plan for our lives and the world. This act of prayer and seeking peace is a demonstration of our trust in God's sovereignty.

Furthermore, we examined the dangers of false prophets and the temptation to seek messages that align with our desires rather than God's truth. True faith requires us to trust in God's word and His promises, even when they do not align with our immediate expectations. The life of faith is built on the promise given, the wait and test, and the fulfillment enjoyed. It is through this process that we grow closer to God and experience His eternal promises.

Finally, we were reminded of the eternal perspective that God holds. While we may be focused on temporary challenges, God is working towards an eternal plan. Our role is to trust in His timing and purpose, knowing that He is working all things for our good.

Day 1: Active Trust in God's Timing
Long-suffering, as a fruit of the Spirit, calls us to develop patience and trust in God's timing and purpose, even amidst trials. This patience is an active trust, not passive waiting, and it strengthens our faith. In life, suffering is inevitable, but it is through these trials that we are called to develop patience and endurance. This patience is not passive but an active trust in God's timing and purpose, even when circumstances are challenging. By embracing this active trust, we allow our faith to grow stronger, knowing that God is working all things for our good. [59:02]

Isaiah 40:31 (ESV): "But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."

Reflection: What is one area in your life where you need to actively trust God's timing? How can you demonstrate this trust today?

Day 2: Eternal Purpose in Temporary Trials
The Babylonian exile teaches us that our trials are temporary, but God's purpose is eternal. We must remain steadfast in our faith, avoiding the cycle of forgetting God during prosperous times. The historical context of the Babylonian exile, where the Israelites faced prolonged hardship due to their disobedience, serves as a powerful reminder of this truth. The Israelites' journey illustrates the human tendency to forget God during prosperous times, only to seek Him when difficulties arise. This cycle of forgetting and remembering God is a lesson for us to remain steadfast in our faith, regardless of our circumstances. [01:00:27]

2 Corinthians 4:17-18 (ESV): "For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal."

Reflection: In what ways have you experienced the cycle of forgetting and remembering God? How can you remain steadfast in your faith during both prosperous and challenging times?

Day 3: Aligning with God's Broader Plan
Seeking peace and prosperity in our communities, even in undesirable circumstances, aligns us with God's broader plan. Praying for our leaders and communities demonstrates our trust in God's sovereignty. By seeking peace and prosperity in the places where God has placed us, even if they are not where we desire to be, we align ourselves with God's broader plan for our lives and the world. This act of prayer and seeking peace is a demonstration of our trust in God's sovereignty, acknowledging that He is in control and working for our good. [01:07:17]

Jeremiah 29:7 (ESV): "But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare."

Reflection: How can you actively seek peace and prosperity in your community today? What specific prayers can you offer for your leaders and community?

Day 4: Discernment Against False Prophets
Beware of false prophets and the temptation to seek messages that align with our desires. True faith requires trusting in God's word and promises, even when they challenge our expectations. The dangers of false prophets and the temptation to seek messages that align with our desires are real. True faith requires us to trust in God's word and His promises, even when they do not align with our immediate expectations. It is through this process that we grow closer to God and experience His eternal promises. [01:09:11]

2 Peter 2:1 (ESV): "But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction."

Reflection: Are there any messages or teachings you have accepted that may align more with your desires than with God's truth? How can you seek discernment in these areas?

Day 5: Trusting in God's Eternal Perspective
God's eternal perspective reminds us that while we focus on temporary challenges, He is working towards an eternal plan. Trusting in His timing and purpose is essential for experiencing His promises. While we may be focused on temporary challenges, God is working towards an eternal plan. Our role is to trust in His timing and purpose, knowing that He is working all things for our good. By maintaining this eternal perspective, we can find peace and assurance in the midst of life's uncertainties. [01:16:03]

Ecclesiastes 3:11 (ESV): "He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end."

Reflection: How can you shift your focus from temporary challenges to God's eternal plan? What steps can you take to trust in His timing and purpose today?

Quotes

"suffering I know you came to get cheered up today and that's not a cheering up sound right long suffering it's a fruit of the spirit why would God give us a fruit that is patient for us to have patience trusting in Him and that we're able to go through long suffering mean it which simply means having a lot of patience and is your suffering because it's not the way you want it to be why would he do that unless he knew we would need it even in those areas in our life he did not leave us helpless Jesus says my father's going to send the Holy Spirit who will be your helper and parts of the fruit of the spirit is that we begin to uh have patience and and longsuffering and God knows I need to work with my patient especially if we had a red light I say that all the time and and that light turns green and I see you on your phone boy I want to hit that horn so bad and get you going right we need we need them to put in a a second horn on the vehicles that when you press it and it would say something nice like would you please go something like that right it's hard to hit that horn and not sound mean right so there's a longsuffering so when we're in the midst of this and again let me get back to Jeremiah 29:11 when God was uh brought this word to the uh Israelites you need to understand that Israel at that time was in the Babylonian exile and they were struggling to see hope but God reassured them of their plan for them and the same thing we have to understand is our trials are temporary but God's purpose is eternal and what happened with Israel again and in everybody's life what always happens is when things are going good the nation of Israel is just a a a shadow foreshadow of what it is to be a Christian led by God and the nation of Israel constantly guess what when they were in trouble oh God God God oh we love you we need you and when things are going good God we're going to put you on the Shelf we're going to kind of do what we want do our own things even begin worshiping other gods and things and so they found them themselves in Exile because they had left or forgot about God things were going so good that they forgot about God and God says okay well you my protection is going to leave I'm not going to keep somebody from overtaking you you want to handle yourself you're trusting and leaning on your own understanding that's you then it's on on you so we see this and he says again in the Bible being in Exile meant being forcibly removed which the Babylonians came and took over he says from one's Homeland it often results in Divine judgment for Disobedience okay think about this uh part Adam and Eve were exiled from the garden why because they had sin and God said I need to remove you from here now and it said and again what happened then we we see all the all the punishment things that uh we're still going through facing today so Exile is b a physical displacement and a spiritual consequence which symbolizes separation from God's blessing and the Covenant protection that we have in our life and this Babylonian uh Exile here that that was happening in uh Jeremiah 29 was uh the southern Kingdom of Judah was taken captive by Babylon and Jerusalem in including the Temple of worship was destroyed and you could uh if you want to write down you could find this in 2 Kings chapter 25 and also in Jeremiah 29 it is speaking of this but what we need to understand is how many people ever heard of Jeremiah 291 far I know the plans I have for you right nobody okay it's okay you can raise your hand if you put on deodorant this morning you can raise your hand if if you put on the just keep your arms down for a second but uh we this is a very familiar script scripture but the problem is most people don't read before it and that's what I want to share with you today we're going to go all the way back to verse four this is uh we just read verse 11 but what does it start in verse four knowing they're in Exile they're in the wedding it says this is what the Lord Almighty the god of Israel uh says to all those and notice what he says that I carried into Exile from Jerusalem to Babylon in other words the Lord says you know what I'm pulling away you're going to be take you are my children the nation of Israel but you have forgotten me and then so you're on your own and they they were hauled off into into Babylon and he says but God's telling them this now in verse five how many of you know there's Seasons we go through Israel made a bad choice forgetting God and now they were faced with a season and you're going to see they were in captivity in Babylon for 70 years God was telling them 70 years is going to pass right now before Jeremiah 29:11 comes into play there's a season you're going to have to go through because of the mistakes you made but God always wants to bring you back and again we go through many seasons in life and so he says this to them while you're in this season build houses and settle down plant Gardens and eat what they produce he even says marry and have sons and daughters find wise for your sons and give your daughters in marriage so they too may have sons and daughters and then he says this in in this season he says increase in number there in other words grow stronger in this season do not decrease and I want to stop here for a second and and equate it kind of to us is you you got to realize a situation you're going to go through is going to make you either bitter toward God or is going to make you better and if we're not careful we could get mad at God God why you let this happen God why this God and we want to blame God for everything human nature right when when Adam sinned what did he tell God hey not my fault it's the woman it's her I don't want to point that my wife the woman woman you get the woman it's her fault and besides her you're the one that gave me her I'm innocent in this business it's all your' fault right we want to blame others for for everything we go through it's human nature Eve said it was the serpent wasn't my fault well Eve it was your fault you chose Adam chose too right we we we forget God and we do these things so in this season that we're going through we have to become closer to God and you could go back to last week's message about seeking God that we need to seek God that trust in the Lord with all your heart see my understanding wants to blame God God you had to let this happen how could you if you love me you would have never let this happen can I tell you the truth if he didn't love you he would have never sent his son to die on the cross for you that's where that proves loves you that you are that he's made a way that your sins could be forgiven you you know what the real tragedy of Eternity is is spending eternity without God separated from God that that's the worst thing that's wor that's worse than the fires of hell it is knowing that you will never be in the presence of God again so he says to grow in this so when the season you find yourself in seek God ask God to help you in every area of your life that you can God as far as my part in here what can I do what are you trying to change in my life what are you doing in my life so we need to grow stronger uh in that relationship with him the verse seven says also seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into Exile pray uh to the Lord for it because if it prospers you too will prosper and there's another key you so I don't care if you're Republican or Democrat whatever you are we are all and who is the President we are always to pray for our leaders we are always to pray for our leaders you know so some people want Trump to fail some people wanted Biden to fail you're only praying to hurt yourself if they are successful then you will be successful if they fail it passes up passes off on us so I want whoever is going to be the president to have as much success as he can right this was the enemy and God said pray that they have success not not in not in their evildoing but in like their economy thing he says uh seek peace and prosperity of the city which I have carried you into Exile and pray for it because if it prospers if that City prospers you too will prosper and then verse 8 says yes this is what the Lord Almighty the god of Israel says now notice this do not let the prophets and Deavers among you deceive you those that are see he's talking about false prophets prophets here and think he sayso not listen and notice this to the dreams you encourage them to have can I tell you sometimes people always want to run to a prophet to get a word from God and they're going to keep going and trying to find a word from God until it matches what they want to hear that's the only word when it aligns with what they want right people go to uh uh even other people just talking about a situation in their life and guess what they're going to keep going to a person till they find a person that agrees with their side of it that's what they're looking for and God's telling them here there are false prophets among you and y'all want to be carried out before these 70 years they're beginning to tell you about all these things for you he says but don't listen to them because I'm not the one that spoke to them they're doing it because they know what your itchy ears want to hear and so we have to go back and trust in God and Trust in his word word with his word says in every situation uh let let me go back to verse eight he says yes this is what the Lord Almighty the god of Israel sayso not let the uh prophets and Deon erors among you deceive you meaning what is deception a if we know what a lie is right when we know what a lie is we don't believe it if someone tells you let me tell you this lie okay Lord please forgive me here let me tell you this lie I only weigh 999 lbs oh wait I I've seen who left you could have at least consoled me there but what you in your mind you're saying of course I don't believe that that's a lie right you don't believe a lie but the problem is when you believe a lie it becomes deception and deception is thinking the LIE is truth so I'm not going to say how much I really we we going to put that all I got to say is when we have our bowling tourament I hope I bowl my weight we're going to win for sure it says don't let the the dreams that you encourage in the have verse nine says then are they are prophesying lies to you and notice what he says in my name I have not sent them declar the Lord this is what the Lord says when 70 years are completed for babon you're going to be there for 70 years he says I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place and that's where it goes into uh for I know the plans I have for you you see sometimes we're stuck in a season for a while and God decides the times of the season we all want right we all want the good times to last forever we want the not so good times to hurry up and get over and and we have to trust God In The Good the Bad and the Ugly and you'd say what why didn't go why God made them stay that long I don't know maybe it would take that long for them to change their mind to have a real change of heart well you know when God was leading the Israelites again out of Egypt and across the the desert they had to go around for 40 years but the trip only would have took a month or so because they were still having to learn to trust God in in things that they were facing so Isaiah chap 55: 8 and9 tells us this for my thoughts are not your thoughts God says that's why we are to lean not on our own understanding but trust the Lord can I tell you something God is smarter than all of us put together it's not even close for my thoughts are not your thoughts and then he says neither are my ways your ways declare of the Lord so a lot of times I need to understand that when I'm praying for God to do something a certain way is not necessarily the way God works in things right so we know that his thoughts are higher than our thoughts his ways are uh higher than our ways and verse 9 says as the heavens are higher than the earth so are my ways higher than than your ways and my thoughts uh higher than your thoughts so I need to understand that God has the bigger picture God's plan is greater than the problems we we Face we don't understand it and that's okay in Romans 8:28 says this and we know that in what things all things which means the good the bad the ugly that all thing God works for what the good in another words if he's working for the good he has a plan for he knows the plans he has for you plans to give you a hope and a future these are good plans for you so he says God works for the good of those who love him who have been called according to wait what whose purpose his purpose it's all about his purpose not our purpose so we we need to learn to trust in God plan knowing that God I don't know why I'm in this season I'm in why it's going like this but I trust you because just as the sun goes down a new day begins and we don't know what day is the new day that God's going to take us out of the situation we're in all he says is trust me trust me have patience second Peter 38 and9 says this but do not not forget this one thing why does he tell us that this is how my mind works when I'm reading stuff do not forget this one thing I believe he's telling us is because we constantly forget do not forget why did Jesus constantly say I tell you the truth because y'all believing so many lies I'm telling you the truth I am the truth the way in the life I need to remind you that I am the truth he's saying because you keep forgetting you keep trusting something else you keep you keep relying on your own understanding he says so don't forget this one thing dear friends would the day would with the Lord a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years or like a day the Lord is not slow in keeping his promise as some understand sless what we think of sless he says instead he is patient with you not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance and what he's talking about here everyone uh no one to perish he's talking about God has Eternal plans we're focused on temporary plans temporary situations and God cares about our daily life he cares about e everything again when Jesus prayed give us our daily bread Jesus was telling us rely on God daily trus in God daily Jesus didn't say pray for your yearly bread why because he knew then we'd only seek God once a year he says seek Him daily and trust in him daily so God has an eternal plan and here we are waiting a a a day is like a thousand years to God a thousand years like a day what we think is long isn't long at all with God and I I wrote this thing that we we see here and we're praying and it minutes pass by and these minutes turn to hours and hours turn to days and days turn to weeks and months uh weeks turn to months and months turn turn to years and that's how Israel was in Babylon they were going hey we waiting we waiting God we're waiting for this promise and God says it's 70 years you're going to wait so we don't know God's timetable we don't know how he works in in all those different things but life of Faith the life of faith is built around these three things that we walk by faith excuse me we we live by faith and not by sight is built around these three things the promise given is the first thing the promise given by God and the promise given is in his word what his word already says for each each and every one of us again we can't go find someone uh like was happened uh in Israel they were trying to find people to speak their way out oh we we we believe we leaving sooner God said no you have to trust God's word in every situation you're going through that that the promise given is the promise in Jeremiah 29:11 for he has a purpose and plan for each and every one of our life so we like the word that we get we love the promise given we love to hear that word but then comes the second part is the wait and the test the wait and the test when we're in the season we don't want to be in we're stuck there but we have to rely on the problem but our problem is the waiting God when God has been so long God did you forget me hello hello can you hear me God can you hear me now because it don't seem like you're hearing me and just because God doesn't answer the prayer you way you want him to doesn't mean he didn't answer right God is a yes a no or a not now maybe later so we understand God answers all our prayers but God is working with the bigger picture behind the scene to make his will come to pass in this world and then the uh third thing is the Fulfillment enjoyed the Fulfillment of the promise so we're we're coming out of the season so there's the promise given which we all like there's the weight and the test which we all don't like and it is the Fulfillment enjoyed and 2 Timothy 4:16 through 18 says this Paul's speaking here Paul had been through so much Paul's goal Paul's mission in life was to share the gospel not only with the Jews but mostly to the Gentiles that the gospel would spread and we talked about this in our men's meeting the other night you know back then it took a long time for information to spread when you when you think about it you know today we get home on the we go home today and you're going to find out what happened in Israel today already on the thing but back then there was no news like that everything was just word of mouth as it reached other places and I shared with them that you know uh when Jesus's disciples ran into John the Baptist's disciples after Jesus had rose from the dead they asked them this did you receive the holy spirit with they're talking about salvation when you believe and they say we believe the messenger of God but we didn't we believe John but we did not receive the Holy Spirit they were they were un you see they had not even realized that Christ had died yet and res resurrected they still were under under the teaching of Jon is that the Messiah is coming that it had not made it to their region yet and that's what uh Jesus's disciples were sharing with them that yes he's already come he spent 33 years and you'll still haven't got the news yet he died and was resurrected and he said and then they became Believers in Christ that they believe uh that Jesus died and resurrected so there's the promise given the wait test and the Fulfillment en Joy Timothy says this Paul's writing to Timothy he says at my first defense notice this he's all he's always always was in trouble with uh sharing the gospel he says no one came to my support but everyone deserted me and sometimes when we're in a season in our life a hard time it feels like everyone has deserted us but can I tell you everyone's going through a season everyone always goes through a season and you're you're not the only one you're not specific to the problem that you're going through everyone goes through situations and Paul just says I F I feel abandoned but notice what he goes on to say I love this it it reminds me of Jesus on the cross so much right when Jesus was was arrested get what did everyone do abandon him then notice what Paul finishes and says they all deserted me but may it not be held against them what did Jesus say father forgive them for they know not what they do you could see the character of Christ already present in Paul's life here as he's making these statements and then verse 17 says but the Lord stood at my side oh everybody else deserted me he says but the Lord stood at my side Di and gave me strength so we when we trust in the Lord and lean on him he will be by our side and give us strength he says so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear and then he says I was delivered from the lon's mouth he said in other words he's saying many a times God spared my life that I should have died and he spared my life but then he says this he changes it back to Eternal things he says the Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and he's talking about in this world and he says and will do one more thing he will bring me safely into his Heavenly Kingdom to him be glory forever and ever and the only way God could bring us safely into his Heavenly Kingdom at this time is when we pass on so he realized he was going to die sooner or later he was trusting God that he'll deliver me from every evil attack but one day he probably won't but I still have promised because my promise in him is not just in this world it's about eternity that he will take me to his Heavenly home that I'll be in his Heavenly Kingdom so again when when you if you put up the promise given the the three things of Fate life is buil around this is what we need to focus on when we realize that God's uh God's plan is greater than our problems is an eternal Prospect so the promise given is that you can have eternal life through Jesus Christ the weight and the test is living in this world where you face many challenges that challenge your faith that challenge all kind of things in your life and the Fulfillment in is in we enjoy will be that he'll bring us safely into his Heavenly Kingdom well we'll be with him forever and ever so if you would just bow your heads as we bring this message to a close this morning if if you've never accepted Jesus Christ as your lord and savior I want to give you that opportunity right now this morning I ask everyone just to stand to your feet right now and I ask you just to repeat this simple prayer from your heart with me say dear heavenly father I come to you today and I admit that I fall short in many areas of my life but I believe you love me so much that you sent your son to die on the cross for the Forgiveness of my sins and I believe he has risen and is seated at your right hand side I invite Christ to come into my heart to be Lord and savior of my life from this day forward amen father I just lift up each and every person in this room and uh within the sound of my voice father God I pray that as we leave this place father those that are facing uh diff difficult situations and circumstances in their life father God that you bre give them
