Embracing Light, Gratitude, and Service in Faith
Summary
On this beautiful day in God's house, we gather to worship and open our hearts to the Holy Spirit, knowing that through Jesus, we always have victory. This gathering is a reminder that we can experience the Holy Spirit every day, not just on Sundays, by pausing and allowing God to fill us. As we prepare for our unique "Toilet Paper Sunday," we reflect on gratitude and how it leads to more blessings. By donating toilet paper, we serve our community, fulfilling Jesus' call to love our neighbors and help those in need. This act of service is a joyful way to support our mission field and demonstrate our faith and generosity.
In the face of global and local tragedies, we seek God's strength and comfort, lifting up those affected by loss and loneliness. We hold both grief and gratitude, knowing that God calls us to be a light in a dark world. This light is essential, especially when life's power seems to go out. We crave the light of Jesus, the spiritual light of the world, which guides us through the Gospel of John. John emphasizes that Jesus is the light that darkness cannot overcome, and this light is with us always.
The story of Jesus calling Philip and Nathanael illustrates overcoming doubt and prejudice. Nathanael's skepticism about Jesus from Nazareth reflects our own biases. Yet, Philip's invitation to "come and see" leads Nathanael to a transformative encounter with Jesus, moving from doubt to faith. This narrative reminds us that every person is sacred and loved by God, and we are called to see beyond prejudices.
As we draw closer to Jesus, we are encouraged to explore and discover the truth of His teachings. This journey can transform us, helping us see the world and its people through Jesus' eyes. We are invited to participate in a Lenten project, sharing words that describe Jesus and the scriptures that support them, fostering a deeper understanding of His character.
Finally, we gather at Christ's table, a place of grace and mercy, where all are welcome. This sacred meal reminds us of Jesus' sacrifice and His call to be the light in our mission field. As we leave, we declare our commitment to follow Jesus, embracing His love, mercy, and grace as we serve the Lord in our daily lives.

Devotional
Day 1: Embracing Daily Victory in Jesus
Every day, not just on Sundays, we are invited to open our hearts to the Holy Spirit and embrace the victory we have in Jesus. This victory is not about worldly success but about living in the assurance of God's presence and guidance. By pausing and allowing God to fill us, we can experience the Holy Spirit's power in our daily lives. This connection empowers us to live victoriously, trusting that God is with us in every moment, guiding us through life's challenges and triumphs. [24:28]
"For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith." (1 John 5:4, ESV)
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you need to invite the Holy Spirit to bring victory today? How can you intentionally pause and open your heart to God's presence in that area?
Day 2: Gratitude as a Pathway to Generosity
Gratitude is a powerful attitude that opens the door to more blessings and opportunities to serve others. By focusing on what we are thankful for, we can shift our perspectives and become more generous, helping those in need and fulfilling Jesus' call to love our neighbors. This mindset of gratitude not only enriches our own lives but also enables us to be a blessing to others, creating a ripple effect of kindness and generosity in our communities. [26:17]
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God." (Colossians 3:16, ESV)
Reflection: Identify three things you are grateful for today. How can you use this gratitude to inspire an act of generosity towards someone in your community?
Day 3: Being a Light in the Darkness
In times of darkness, we crave the light of Jesus, the spiritual light of the world. This light guides us through life's challenges, reminding us that darkness cannot overcome it. We are called to be this light in a world that often feels dark, offering hope and guidance to those around us. By embodying the light of Jesus, we can make a difference in our communities, shining brightly in the midst of adversity and uncertainty. [39:39]
"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house." (Matthew 5:14-15, ESV)
Reflection: In what specific ways can you be a light to someone who is experiencing darkness today? How can you offer hope and encouragement to them?
Day 4: Overcoming Prejudice with Love
The story of Nathanael's skepticism about Jesus from Nazareth teaches us to overcome our biases and see others as God sees them—sacred and loved. By setting aside prejudices, we can experience transformative encounters with Jesus and others. This narrative challenges us to examine our own biases and invites us to approach others with love and openness, recognizing the divine image in every person we meet. [48:34]
"For God shows no partiality." (Romans 2:11, ESV)
Reflection: Reflect on a bias or prejudice you hold. How can you actively work to overcome it and see others through God's eyes today?
Day 5: Discovering the Truth of Jesus' Teachings
We are invited to explore and discover the truth of Jesus' teachings, deepening our understanding of His character. This journey transforms us, helping us see the world and its people through Jesus' eyes, and encourages us to share this light with others. Quotes
We are so glad that all of you are here, that we might worship our Lord and our Savior, that we might come into this space and our hearts would just open up and God would fill us with his Holy Spirit. So if there was a need, did you have a need at all in this last week to connect in with God? Was there a moment in this past week that you just needed to connect in with the God who loves you so very much? [00:11:30] (34 seconds)
We gather that. We would experience that together on Sunday mornings. And just a reminder, we can experience that Holy Spirit every single day of the week when we pause, when we open our hearts and we allow that Holy Spirit to fill us. And when that happens, we can trust that we get to win with Jesus. We like to be winners, don't we? I mean. Who wants to be a loser? [00:12:53] (35 seconds)
We get to have a little fun as we do this. We get to have a little fun as we do it, but as we're having fun, what we get to know is we are serving our mission field. We are loving our neighbor as ourself, and we are helping to fulfill, as Jesus said to us, whatever you do unto the least of these, you do unto me. And so this is one small way that we get to come alongside. [00:27:00] (32 seconds)
God, as we come into this space and we know that we hold all of these emotions of sadness of loss of grief we also know that we hold the feelings of gratitude and joy and blessings of laughter god we know that we hold all of these moments all of these emotions all in the same breath and so god would you be with us that as we walk these days that you would allow us to be your light in a world that sometimes feels extra dark. [00:35:02] (45 seconds)
The Gospel of John is written so that we are always being guided back to connect with that light for our souls. And here over the last few weeks we've been journeying through the Gospel of John. John tells us that Jesus is the light of the world. That Jesus was there. In the very beginning. That even if the darkness tries it will never be able to overcome the light. The darkness will never overcome the light of the world. [00:41:40] (44 seconds)
Our passage begins with Jesus' purposeful decision to go to Galilee. He finds Philip and with a simple, follow me, he invites him into the light to join Jesus on this amazing journey of faith. And Philip's acceptance, it is immediate, it is wholehearted. Philip is all in. And then Philip goes to his very best friend, Nathaniel. And that is the heart of today's scripture lesson. [00:43:52] (32 seconds)
Nathaniel's doubt is a mirror reflection of our own biases in the shadows of the world. And it's a mirror reflection of our own biases in the shadows of the shadows that can cloud our vision. We have, all of us hold prejudices. We have prejudgments about other things and people. And, you know, you don't have to live in Indiana all that long before you are very much aware of the rivalry war between IU and Purdue. [00:46:27] (35 seconds)
When we stay in our prejudice, we are not only dimming, the light of Jesus, we are living in direct contrast to how Jesus lived and how Jesus taught us to live as his disciples. We all have our preconceived ideas, but here's what we need to know. Every single human being is God's child. We are all God's children, and that makes us sacred. And holy, and loved.
