Embracing Jesus' Kingship Through Praise and Surrender
Summary
In today's gathering, we focused on the transformative power of praise and the undeniable kingship of Jesus Christ. We began by acknowledging the struggles and storms that many of us face, emphasizing that choosing to praise God amidst these challenges can lead to divine intervention and transformation. Our God, the creator of the universe, is capable of moving in every situation, whether it be in our marriages, jobs, or personal struggles. We are called to be vessels of His light, taking His presence into the world, into our workplaces, and into the lives of those who are lost and hurting.
We explored the question of Jesus' kingship, addressing the skepticism surrounding His identity as the King of the Jews. Through the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies, Jesus' genealogy, and the reactions of both His followers and enemies, we see a clear picture of His divine authority. Jesus fulfilled over 300 prophecies, a statistical improbability that underscores His unique role as the Messiah. His lineage through both Joseph and Mary confirms His rightful claim to the throne of David, and even His adversaries, like Herod, recognized His kingship, albeit with fear and hostility.
The message today challenges us to consider whether Jesus is not only the King of the Jews but also our personal King. This is a call to surrender, to allow Christ to command our lives, and to live in a way that reflects His light to the world. We are reminded that Jesus' kingdom is not of this world; it is a spiritual reign that invites us to participate in His eternal kingdom. As we prepare for upcoming events like Easter, we are encouraged to be active participants in sharing the gospel, inviting others to experience the transformative power of Jesus.

Day 1: Praise as a Pathway to Divine Intervention
Choosing to praise God in the midst of life's storms is a powerful act of faith that invites His transformative presence into our circumstances. When we lift our voices in praise, even when faced with challenges, we open the door for God to work in our lives in unexpected ways. Praise is not merely a reaction to favorable outcomes but a declaration of trust in God's sovereignty and His ability to change our situations. By praising God, we align ourselves with His will and invite His power to move in our marriages, jobs, and personal struggles. [26:15]
Psalm 34:1-3 (ESV): "I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together!"
Reflection: Think of a current struggle you are facing. How can you intentionally choose to praise God in the midst of this situation today?
Day 2: The Fulfillment of Prophecies as Evidence of Jesus' Kingship
The life of Jesus Christ is a testament to the fulfillment of over 300 Old Testament prophecies, affirming His identity as the Messiah and King. This statistical improbability highlights the divine orchestration of His life, death, and resurrection. Jesus' genealogy through both Joseph and Mary confirms His rightful claim to the throne of David, and even His adversaries recognized His kingship, albeit with fear and hostility. These fulfillments are not just historical facts but divine promises realized, underscoring Jesus' unique role as the Savior of the world. [27:45]
Isaiah 9:6-7 (ESV): "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this."
Reflection: Reflect on the prophecies about Jesus that have been fulfilled. How does this knowledge strengthen your faith in His kingship and promises?
Day 3: Surrendering to Jesus' Spiritual Reign
Jesus invites us to enter His kingdom, which requires personal surrender and obedience. This invitation is not about adhering to religious rituals but about cultivating a genuine relationship where Christ reigns in our hearts. Surrendering to Jesus means allowing Him to guide our decisions, shape our character, and influence our actions. It is a call to live in a way that reflects His light to the world, participating in His eternal kingdom and experiencing the fullness of life He offers. [29:47]
Colossians 1:13-14 (ESV): "He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins."
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you find yourself holding back from surrendering to Jesus? What would surrendering this area to Him actually look like in terms of daily habits?
Day 4: Being Light in the Darkness
As followers of Christ, we are called to be vessels of His light, reflecting His presence in our daily lives. This means being available for God to use us, even in unexpected places and times, to reach those who are struggling. By living as light in the darkness, we bring hope, love, and truth to a world in need. Our actions, words, and attitudes should point others to Jesus, demonstrating His transformative power and inviting them to experience His grace. [35:28]
Matthew 5:14-16 (ESV): "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."
Reflection: Identify one way you can be a light in your community or workplace this week. How can you intentionally reflect Jesus' love and truth to those around you?
Day 5: Embracing Jesus as Our Personal King
The question of Jesus' kingship is not just historical but deeply personal. We are invited to make Him our King, to worship Him, and to live in a way that honors His sacrifice and love. Embracing Jesus as our personal King means allowing Him to command our lives, guiding our decisions and shaping our values. It is a call to live with purpose, participating in His eternal kingdom and sharing the gospel with others. As we prepare for significant events like Easter, we are encouraged to be active participants in inviting others to experience the transformative power of Jesus. [01:15:17]
Revelation 17:14 (ESV): "They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful."
Reflection: Consider whether Jesus is truly the King of your life. What steps can you take today to ensure that He reigns in your heart and actions?
Quotes
"I serve the God, the creator of the heavens and the earth. The one who owns the cattle on a thousand hills. I serve the God who with his breath spoke everything that is into existence, that with his finger carved out the valleys and with his hands formed the mountains. I serve the God who created me and breathed his life. I serve the God of the earth. I serve the God of the earth. Into me. And I know that that God that I serve will move in every situation today in this place. Every marriage. Every lost child. Every struggle in a job. Every struggle with a neighbor. Every struggle we have in our minds. I know that there's a God that sits on the throne in heaven that can touch every one of those situations." [00:25:29]
"That God would move us beyond Sunday morning and move us to a new place in our lives. That everything we do glorifies him. That every word I speak. That every action I take would be a reflection of who he is and what he wants to do in the earth. God didn't call us to check a Sunday morning box. He called us to be light in the dark. He called us on our jobs to be light. He called us at Walmart to be light. He called us at discount tire when we're getting our tires rotated to be light. Hear me. What he wants in us is surrender. What he wants in us is God to move in every place we go." [00:28:22]
"If we would just start living in that faith of who he is and what he'll do in our lives, there ain't nothing that the enemy could do to stop us. If we lived in that same faith, when we left this building every single Sunday, we wouldn't have a struggle in our marriages, in our finances. Our kids would act right. We would have no problems. Amen? That ain't even my sermon this morning. By goodness gracious. But I'm ready for us to live in a demonstration all the time of who God is and what he wants to do in our lives." [00:34:32]
"Because that's the whole reason we come to church. And everybody that's watching online, that y'all decided to stay home today because it's raining. Next time it rains, I ain't turning that stream on. All right, I ain't doing it. I say that every time. But I ain't going to do it next time. You got to come to the house of the Lord. Amen. It ain't raining right now. Look, I was standing under that awning and I said, it started raining. I said, Lord, give me 20 minutes. And you know what it did? I said, it quit raining and God gave us 20 minutes for people to get in the building." [00:34:24]
"Listen to me if you make yourself available in the middle of discount tire God will use you for somebody else because he didn't put us on this earth for us he put us on earth for people that are struggling and going through mess in their lives so that God can move in their circumstance and their situation the question is are we willing to be used this is free this morning I ain't even got to Jesus code yet but he said and I will say this until I can't preach no more at the end of the book of Matthew go into all the world and preach and teach and baptize and make disciples and what that means is is I'm available whether it's my day off or not because God wants to use us to reach people who are struggling in their mess and when we let our light shine they will come at the end of the day they will come and I believe with all my heart the reason Shannon and I are in Tennessee is to help us get to a place where we live every day with the light of Jesus shining out of our lives because one thing I've discovered in a year here in this area is there is a darkness in Wilson County that needs to be touched by the hand of God and it takes the church being the church to get into those places amen now let's get where I want to go this morning that one was free so if I go over this morning it's the Holy Spirit not me you can't fuss at me" [00:37:51]
"Shannon mentioned in your seat you will notice there are cards we got our invite cards for Easter on one side is the invitation to our Easter service on the other side is the invitation to our Easter palooza I want you to take those cards with you now listen this is not all we have I will give you all the cards you want I got a box full of these I want you to take them and give them to your friends at work I want them to I want you to give them to your family if you're at Walmart go put them on windshields take these cards invite people here's what I know God is going to do something great in the next couple of weeks in this church I fill it with everything in me Palm Sunday is going to be a big day I'll just go ahead and let you know now Sunday Palm Sunday is going to be a big day not because it's Palm Sunday but because we've got seven people getting baptized and they've got a lot of family and friends amen seven people that's a big deal that are going to be getting baptized and this place is going to be packed with family and friends and we have an opportunity to share Jesus with them amen and then that very next week is Easter Sunday and I believe God's going to do something amazing there Shannon mentioned that we've all been running our ad for all but about a week and already got 400 people interested we had 1500 people come through here last week and that 400 represents a family or last year not last week sorry last year we had 1500 people roughly come through here at this point where we are right now we're already nearly double where we were a week before our event last year on people interested that's 400 families interested not just people that's families you do the math we do the math at about three people per family right now that puts us at about what 1200 people interested in our event this year and we still got three weeks of advertisement to go I prayed a crazy prayer a few months ago and it was God give us 3000 people for our Easter event 3000 well pastor where are we going to put 3000 we're going to shove them in here but here's what I know it's an opportunity for us to reach 3000 people with the gospel of Jesus Christ because that's what God called us to do and here's what I know there's going to be people that come on the grounds that weekend there's going to be people here Palm Sunday there's going to be people here on Saturday the 19th and there's going to be people here on Easter Sunday that don't know Jesus and it's an opportunity for us to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with people and here's what I want you to do is pray God use me here's the other thing we want to use you here as a volunteer that day I need every if you ain't signed up go ahead and sign up see Dana before you leave get us get get on the list we need everybody we need all hands on deck that Sunday that Saturday and probably that Sunday too because I believe God's going to do something awesome continue to bring you candy all of those things but God's getting ready to blow our minds here he's already doing it right amen we got some folks sick there's some sickness this week so y 'all be in prayer for that some folks traveling hopefully we'll have all of our normals back next week amen let's jump into this this morning so I don't keep you too long last week of course we started a new series called the Jesus Code and none of y 'all sang along with my intro this morning last week every one of you was whoo whoo whoo whoo nobody sang with me I guess y 'all was afraid after Jesus moved to do that because y 'all thought he might get in trouble for singing a secular song in church but last week we started a series called Jesus Code and we began exploring the subject and asking this question is he a liar is he a lunatic or is he lord and we looked into the claim last week of is Jesus real was he even a real person did he exist at all or was he a myth and we discovered last week that Jesus was definitely real right the bible says he's real history is beginning to tell us that he's real and historians secular historians right we talked about this are beginning to verify the things of the bible and how accurate the bible really actually is so we know that Jesus himself was real right now this week we're going to dig into the question" [00:39:58]
"of this was Jesus really the king of the Jews or was his title a fabricated claim we can't there's no denying Jesus was real right gee we have established he was on this earth he walked this earth history tells us he lived but when the skeptics can't debunk the fact that he wasn't a myth they switched to a new argument well he really wasn't a king what are the skeptics say let's look at a couple of things this week because once they prove he's real once we can come back and say Jesus is real they move on to their next argument that Jesus really wasn't a king that the idea of him as king of the Jews was later invented by his followers right they came back later said oh he's a he's a king or he was and that that that it was a fabricated story and what they say is he didn't fulfill the prophecies that his own people the Jews rejected him as king and if he truly was king where is his kingdom right here's what they argue Jesus did not fulfill the messianic prophecies of an earthly reign right if he was truly the messiah why didn't he establish an earthly kingdom and bring peace as the prophets foretold right we've already proved he's real so now they've got to move on to a new argument well he didn't fulfill the prophecies right because here's what the Jewish tradition expected they expected Jesus to come back as this mighty warrior right they expected Jesus to come in and usher an era of universal peace build a third temple and gather all the Jews back to the land of Israel's but in their eyes he failed but when you read Isaiah chapter 53 and when you read Psalms 22 we see a messiah who would be persecuted and killed but the Jews chose to focus on the prophecies that discuss his victories not his crucifixion there were prophecies they chose to focus on and then there were prophecies they chose not to focus on right they believed that the messiah would come deliver them from Roman bondage and because that didn't happen they say that Jesus was not the messiah right the next thing they try to say is that his genealogy is contradictory right the genealogies in Matthew and Luke don't perfectly align leading some to argue that his royal lineage was fabricated right but here's what we need to remember they only appear contradictory because they trace Jesus's lineage differently and I'm going to talk about that in just a moment right Matthew focuses on Joseph's line while Luke focuses on Mary's genealogy and just because writers approach a subject differently does not mean there are contradictions that's the same when you do any kind of investigation there's many ways to get the answer but just because you took a left and I took a right when we end up back at the same point it doesn't mean there was a contradiction it just means we took different paths to get to the answer right the next one that they try to argue is that Jesus was rejected by his own people if he was truly the king of the Jews why did the Jewish leaders oppose him and demand his crucifixion well I just mentioned it they rejected him because they picked through the prophecies they wanted and threw out the others that doesn't sound like the church at all today does it ain't none of us read through the scriptures and take the things we want and throw away the things that challenge us and make us want to change I ain't ever done that in my life right so the question this week we must answer is not was Jesus a true king and was his title just a religious myth but we also have to answer the question is he your king we're gonna look into that amen lord I pray that you would open our ears that you'd open our hearts to hear and receive what you have for us today that god when we leave this place today let us take these things into a world that needs Jesus not keep them to ourselves but take them to a world that needs Jesus and the church said amen let's look at a couple things as we try to debunk these claims from the skeptics like let's let's look first at the prophetic puzzle and we're gonna ask ourselves did Jesus fulfill the actual blueprint be to be who he said he was Micah 5 2 says but you oh Bethlehem Ephrathah or Ephrathah I can't talk this morning are only a small village among all the people of Judah yet a ruler of Israel whose origins are in the distant past will come from you on my behalf one of the strongest pieces of evidence for Jesus kingship is his fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy right one of the skeptics claims is that Jesus did not fulfill the Old Testament prophecy but we're going to begin to look at how Jesus did fulfill that prophecy and right here in Micah chapter 5 verse 2 one of the first things you see is that the ruler will come from Bethlehem right he will come from Bethlehem which at the time was a small insignificant town no one thought much about Bethlehem but I want you to see this only Jesus fits the messianic claims in Micah chapter 5 verse 2 he was born in Bethlehem Ephrathah you can find that in Matthew 2 and Luke 2 go over there and read Matthew 2 and Luke 2 and you'll see those claims backed up right he also fits the description of being in the distant past or from ancient times well pastor how is he from ancient times" [00:44:18]
"times are from the past when he was born well let's look at John 1 1 what does it say in the beginning was the word the word already existed the word was with God and the word was God right we know that they're speaking of Jesus here this verse here is speaking of Jesus so it says in the beginning the word already existed the word was with God and the word was God if that's not enough let's go to Colossians chapter 1 verses 16 through 17 I hope you're taking notes today amen I didn't put them up there on the screen on purpose and it says beginning of verse 16 for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth he made the things we can see and the things we can't see such as thrones kingdoms rulers and authorities in the unseen world everything was created through him and for him he existed listen he existed before anything else and he holds all creation together I want you to see the verse first part of verse 16 through him God created who's him Jesus Paul here is talking about Jesus in other words he's been here the entire time so when he came to earth as an earthly man as an earthly child he fulfilled the first part of Micah 5 2 by being born in the town that it said he would be born in and then the second thing happened because he's been here the whole time he was at the beginning at creation we talked about this a few months ago when you go back to Genesis when God says let us create them in our image who's he talking about he's talking about him Jesus and the Holy Ghost okay so he's been here the entire time and we established last week well that's what the Bible says how do we know it's true well we established last week that secular historians are now proving how accurate the Bible is so if people want to try to debunk you take them back to what secular historians and secular uh writers are saying that the Bible is a reliable piece of literature right and when we read these prophecies and we read about Jesus fulfilling these prophecies we can put faith in what the scripture says when it comes to Jesus in other words we can put faith in the entire word of God because everything in the Old Testament points to Jesus the four gospels speak of his life and everything after the gospels and his death point back to what Jesus if you're struggling this morning with with whether the word of God is true not just from a spiritual standpoint but from what the secular world is now proving the Bible is true hear me people want to say oh it's just made up stories God couldn't have read it and they couldn't have been really from God because man wrote the book well you trust the science book don't you you trust the history book don't you right they were all written by men too and one of them I promise you you go to the cover of your science book and a man's name is credited for writing that book you go look at a history book I know right now because our children are in school and I go look at my daughter's history book guess who's credited for writing that book a man will put our faith in secular things but we won't put our faith in Jesus Christ because we say oh it's not really from God a man wrote it God inspired the word of God he inspired the Bible he inspired those men to the right in history" [00:50:21]
"so if we've proved by prophecy Jesus is who he said he is and we've proved through genealogy that Jesus Jesus is who he says he is what is the bible or what do others not the bible what do others say Jesus is how did they view his kingship well Matthew 2 2 says where is the newborn king of the Jews now when you read this chapter this is the magi speaking here they've come to Herod and they're asking him where is the newborn king of the Jews we saw his star as it rose and we have come to worship him if Jesus kingship was a myth why did he cause such strong reactions both from his followers and his enemies I want you to think about that for a second because we read here in Matthew Matthew 2 2 that the wise men acknowledge knowledge" [01:08:28]
"his kingship they're standing before Herod and they say where is the newborn king of the Jews they brought gold and frankincense and myrrh which were all symbolic gifts of a ruler and when you begin to read down into Matthew chapter 2 we see that Herod is fearful of his kingship right Matthew 2 3 through 5 says and King Herod was deeply disturbed when he heard this as was everyone in Jerusalem he called a meeting of the leading priests and teachers of religious law and asked where is the Messiah supposed to be born in Bethlehem in Judea they said for this is what the prophet wrote if you read on down and you get to verse 16 there in Matthew 2 you see that Herod then orders the murder of every newborn male child under two years old to eliminate the threat of Jesus now let me ask you this if Jesus wasn't a king or entitled to the throne then why would the reigning king be so threatened by him because they understood the prophecy and they knew that the Messiah was coming and that's why hear me Pilate placed a sign the king of the Jews above his cross you see that in John 19 19 mocking him yet still acknowledging the claim of who he was why because his enemies feared his authority Jesus kingship was recognized even by those who opposed him you don't try to eliminate a threat if you ain't afraid of that threat taking your reign right they feared him because they knew who he was that's why they still try to stop us today from believing that Jesus is who he said he is because the world knows the enemy Satan knows that he is real and that he is the king on the throne and his goal is to get you off your game so that you'll quit believing and following at the end of the day he doesn't care if you're a hardcore sinner he just wants to stop you from going to heaven there's going to be a lot of people who die and go to hell who were good people but they just didn't believe in Jesus that's all the enemy wants to convince us of so the question again this week isn't was Jesus the king of the Jews but he is he your king because the question is is he the king of the Jews is a historical question and a religious question but the question is he your king is a personal question it's a spiritual question last week we saw that the evidence showed Jesus was real and this week the evidence is overwhelming I could spend hours on the prophecy piece I could spend hours on the bloodline but what it all shows us is that Jesus was no ordinary man he was the prophesied king of the Jews prophecies point to him genealogies verify him and the world reacts to him because they know he is who he says he is yet Jesus didn't establish an earthly kingdom because his kingdom was greater than that right he came not just to rule over people but to reign within them hear me Jesus is not a king who imposes his kingdom he invites us to enter into his kingdom he invites us to be a part of a kingdom and ultimately the decision to enter the kingdom is about our choice here's what good kings do they take care of their people but they also have authority to command us do we allow Christ to command us that's why people reject him because they don't want to submit we've talked about that a lot I'm not going to go into that but human nature says I ain't surrendering to nobody that's why the world's in a constant threat of war or in war all the time because people don't want to get along and surrender to no one because we're all power hungry even in the church we got people that want a title but not the responsibility that comes with a title right it's not about titles in the kingdom of God it's just about doing the work of Jesus do we allow Christ to command us or are we like most people who don't like to be told what to do or maybe we take on the attitude in which we reduce Jesus to a harmless hippie who just says pleasant things but would never rebuke us or insist upon our repentance" [01:13:24]
