i think we can discern a little bit of a theme running through this and kind of the general theme of holiness or separation of god honoring god with with our life beginning right there in verse 28 where he says you shall not revile god nor curse a ruler of your people it isn't interesting the first idea if you want to link these together with the idea of holiness it comes back first to what you say [00:01:07]

remember isaiah uh there in his heavenly vision before god what did he say when he recognized his own unholiness you say i'm a man of unclean lips and i dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips i mean that's the first place where he recognizes and if we be honest a lot of times our speech betrays us um maybe the impurity or the unholiness in our life [00:01:31]

the bible says out of the heart the mouth speaks yes so whatever is contained inside will come out through our words and if uh rebellion if resistance is there what he says you shall not revile god nor curse a ruler of your people yeah it's kind of interesting here i don't want to get too far afield on this but the hebrew text here says you shall not revile elohim nor curse a ruler of your people [00:01:57]

another way to honor god is to do what give to him give to him what's due from our material resources but why did he want the first wasn't the first always just considered the best in a sense the first fruit is this like that's that's the best there is the first yeah it's kind of funny that's the conceptual idea uh in in the ancient hebrew world and maybe beyond that was giving god the first was a way of giving him the best [00:03:04]

you work hard for those very first things that you have and so by giving that you're you're saying this is what i've worked hard for this is the best that i have and giving it back to you and in an uncertain world the first comes and maybe nothing will follow but you still honor god with your first you know even if it ends up being you're you're only [00:03:48]

the idea of getting gotten the first it didn't just apply to agricultural produce what else it's also to your family yeah he says you shall the firstborn of your sons you shall give to me so it's not only those the kind of the prophet that you get the material possessions but actually your family that you give okay so here i am ancient israelite and the firstborn of my grain [00:04:09]

do i sacrifice my firstborn son what do you do here well it wasn't more of an idea of just uh an idea of redemption like i i owe my firstborn son here he is i owe i thank god for him giving him so i'm going to just redeem him in a sense with money and deal with the idea right you would never practice human sacrifice you know in honor of the god of israel [00:04:40]

so when you were to give the firstborn to god you do it as a substitute with money the same was true of unclean animals you know um a donkey was an unclean animal and if you were breeding donkeys i don't even know how that exactly works but whatever you you would never sacrifice a donkey unto the lord it's an unclean animal but you would give a monetary value to substitute for it interesting [00:05:04]

in the new covenant you know the idea of giving god first or you're you know we we have like uh where we have uh we do baby dedications you know right right that's not maybe the same record but you know um this idea of giving unto god in our generosity towards him it's it's um it's not presented as law in the new testament in the same way but the the heart of it certainly isn't lessened [00:05:47]

the idea isn't when you were generous to god under the old covenant you can be less generous to god under the new covenant no i kind of like what some early christians said i can't quote you chapter and verse from one of the early church fathers but i know it was said among early christians something like this they said we are not under the tithe we can get more [00:06:14]

and you shall be holy men to me you shall not eat meat torn by beasts in the field no road kill for ancient israel man why not that's a little squirrel on the highway yeah i mean how do you what what's what's the idea here why would god say such a thing does it seem out of place i mean a little out of place but again you mentioned a moment ago the whole reason we're kind of lumping these together this idea of separation [00:07:09]

the fundamental idea behind holiness is separation and you know you're sort of separating yourself from scavengers from animals by saying no we don't eat something that's a half dead carcass out you know in the thing no that that's something that other animals and other predators let the dogs do that god's called us to a measure of holiness [00:07:50]
