Embracing Grace: Transformative Power Beyond the Grave
Summary
In this sermon, we explore the profound theme of "Beyond the Grave," focusing on the enduring impact of Jesus Christ's life, death, and resurrection. Jesus' promise in John 14:18 assures us that He will not leave us as orphans but will come to us, offering eternal life. This promise is a testament to the God of second chances, a theme that resonates throughout the Bible. Many biblical figures, such as Peter, Paul, Rahab, and King David, experienced God's grace and redemption despite their flawed pasts.
The sermon highlights the story of Matthew, a tax collector with a scandalous history, who was given a second chance by Jesus. Despite being despised by his community, Matthew was seen and called by Jesus as he was, without preconditions. This encounter with Jesus transformed Matthew's life, illustrating that Jesus sees us, loves us, and calls us as we are. However, He does not leave us unchanged; His love and grace empower us to transform and grow in our relationship with Him.
The sermon emphasizes that Christianity is not about adhering to a set of rules but about cultivating a loving relationship with God. Jesus desires mercy and compassion over religious rituals, urging us to focus on our relationship with Him rather than mere religious observance. This relationship is transformative, as Jesus' grace empowers us to live righteously and fulfill our God-given potential.

Day 1: God's Unending Mercy and Redemption
God's nature is one of mercy and redemption, offering second chances to those who have faltered. Throughout the Bible, we see individuals like Peter, Paul, and Rahab who, despite their past mistakes, were transformed by God's grace. This theme of second chances is a powerful reminder that no matter how many times we fall, God is always ready to extend His mercy and offer us a fresh start. His grace is not limited by our past but is abundant and available to all who seek it. [03:23]
"For the Lord your God is gracious and merciful and will not turn away his face from you, if you return to him." (2 Chronicles 30:9b, ESV)
Reflection: Is there an area in your life where you feel you need a second chance? How can you invite God's grace into that situation today?
Day 2: Jesus' Unconditional Call
Jesus sees us in our current state and calls us to follow Him without requiring us to change first. This unconditional call is a testament to His love and grace, which empowers us to transform and grow in our relationship with Him. The story of Matthew, a tax collector with a scandalous history, illustrates this beautifully. Despite being despised by his community, Matthew was seen and called by Jesus as he was, without preconditions. This encounter with Jesus transformed Matthew's life, showing that Jesus sees us, loves us, and calls us as we are. [16:36]
"And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples." (Matthew 9:10, ESV)
Reflection: In what ways can you respond to Jesus' call in your life today, knowing that He accepts you as you are?
Day 3: Relationship Over Ritual
Christianity is not about following a set of rules but about developing a loving relationship with God. Jesus desires mercy and compassion over religious rituals, urging us to focus on our relationship with Him rather than mere religious observance. This relationship is transformative, as Jesus' grace empowers us to live righteously and fulfill our God-given potential. By prioritizing our relationship with God, we open ourselves to His transformative power, which enables us to live according to His will. [22:51]
"For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings." (Hosea 6:6, ESV)
Reflection: How can you prioritize your relationship with God over religious rituals in your daily life?
Day 4: Empowered by Grace
Jesus' grace is not just about forgiveness but also about empowering us to live righteously. As we draw closer to Jesus, His grace transforms us, enabling us to overcome sin and live according to His will. This empowerment is a key aspect of our spiritual journey, as it allows us to grow in our faith and fulfill our God-given potential. By embracing Jesus' grace, we are equipped to face the challenges of life and live in a way that honors Him. [26:48]
"But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain." (1 Corinthians 15:10a, ESV)
Reflection: In what areas of your life do you need to rely more on Jesus' grace for empowerment and transformation?
Day 5: The Beginning of Eternal Life
In Christianity, forgiveness, salvation, and eternal life begin when we accept Jesus Christ. Unlike other religions where these are the end goals, in Christianity, they are the starting point of a transformative journey with God. This journey is marked by a deepening relationship with Jesus, who offers us eternal life and the promise of His presence. By accepting Jesus, we embark on a path of spiritual growth and transformation, guided by His love and grace. [30:09]
"And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent." (John 17:3, ESV)
Reflection: How can you embrace the beginning of eternal life with Jesus today, and what steps can you take to deepen your relationship with Him?
Quotes
And so we thank God because of the resurrection Because of the rection resurrection we get a second chance in life We get another opportunity And so I want to talk about that today The God of second chance The God of second chance And if I really want to be honest we're all honest here We've not only gotten a second chance some of us third fourth some of us are running to a hundred chances right How God has really helped us along the way [00:03:10]
Many of the heroes in the Bible many of the men and women of God that we see in the word of God and we say "Man these guys were tremendous God used them in a powerful way." Many of them if you look into their history if you look into their past if you look into what they were before they came to Christ their lives are kind of sketchy kind of a a shady past a scandalous history of many of them [00:03:41]
And then God gave him a second chance after the resurrection of Jesus Jesus restores Peter and he becomes one of the first disciples to preach the gospel and 3,000 people come to Christ because of Peter The Apostle Paul this great man that uh we read about in the book of Acts we have onethird of the New Testament written by Paul the Apostle Before he was Paul the Apostle he was Saul of Tarsus and he persecuted the church of God [00:04:48]
And so when I walk with Jesus it's not about rules and regulations but out of my love and relationship with God there are certain things I don't do There are certain places I don't go because out of my commitment and relationship with God not because of ruse but out of relationship See people have made Christianity a religion I feel sorry for you It's about a relationship with God and honoring who he is and being called a friend [00:25:07]
And so Jesus changed the life of Matthew because the closer you get to Jesus the more you're going to change The closer you have a relationship with God the greater the transformation is going to be in your life Friend it's not about dos and don'ts and do all this The closer you get to God you're going to change There's going to be a testimony The Bible says those that are in Christ man I'm telling you the Bible says those that belong to Christ old things pass away and behold everything becomes new [00:26:48]
And see when we think about eternity when we think about God's goodness when we think about heaven it's not good people that make it to heaven It's forgiven people People that understand it is by the grace of God that we have been forgiven that he's touched our lives and that we surrender our hearts to him And what without a moment's hesitation Matthew begins to follow Jesus And I begin to think about this enormous risk he was giving up everything [00:30:37]
He was surrendering everything All this economic risk that he was taking this reputation that he had he couldn't go back He had abandoned his post The money the pride the status he was giving it all up And the Bible says he left everything to follow Jesus And I'm telling you he left everything Not just his job but he left his guilt He left his shame He left his sin He left all his past and begin to follow Jesus [00:31:29]
Everybody else saw Matthew's past but Jesus saw his future Everybody saw his betrayal but Jesus saw his commitment Everybody else saw this man as a failure as somebody that was no good according to the Jewish people but Jesus saw him as a spiritual spiritual giant Because Jesus today is the answer He is the God of second chance So I want to pray Why don't we bow our heads in reverence to the Lord [00:36:48]
Jesus was telling the religious people of that time you guys got religion but you don't have relationship See Jesus is not about religion Jesus is about a relationship Jesus is not about a bunch of dos and don'ts It's about having a loving relationship with God And the Pharisees they had all the religious things down And this is why Jesus was telling the Pharisees "Go and learn what this means." He said "I desire mercy over sacrifice." [00:22:51]
And this is why the people hated them They couldn't stand them because they knew that they were cheating They knew that they were lying But there was nothing they could do about it And so Matthew was not some peasant He wasn't some poor guy He was very wealthy He had a lot of money but he was empty He had a lot of money but he didn't have Jesus People hated him The Roman government hated him because he was Jewish but he collected taxes for them [00:10:58]
And so here is Jesus being seen with Matthew and he said "Follow me." They go and they have dinner And then the Bible says that there's this big banquet there and Jesus is there talking and ministering to all of these people that are there The third thing I want to say is Jesus saw Matthew as he was And I want you to write this down Jesus see or calls me as I am He not only sees me as I am he calls me as I am [00:21:51]
And so Jesus makes the promise here that I'm not going to leave you as orphans but I'm going to come again Jesus is assuring his disciples that again he's not abandoning them He's not leaving them as orphans but in fact he is going to be with them He says "You're not going to see me for a while." Because Jesus was going to be crucified and buried for three days But then he said "You're going to see me again." [00:02:30]
