Embracing Grace: The Transformative Power of Baptism
Summary
In today's gathering, we celebrated the profound significance of baptism and the transformative power of grace in our lives. We began by acknowledging the warmth and love within our community, encouraging newcomers to connect and engage with us. Our partnership with Lift Cleveland in creating homeless care kits exemplifies our commitment to serving our local community, providing tangible expressions of kindness to those in need.
The highlight of our time together was the baptism of 61 individuals, a testament to the life-changing decision to follow Jesus. Baptism is an outward expression of an inward transformation, symbolizing our identification with Christ's death and resurrection. It is a public declaration of faith, a step that Jesus himself commanded us to take. We explored the theological significance of baptism, emphasizing that it is a personal decision made by those who understand and have embraced the message of Jesus.
We also took a moment to honor Pastor Greg and Jennifer for their 35 years of dedicated service at Grace Church. Their impact on countless lives, particularly through leading people to Christ and facilitating baptisms, is a testament to their faithfulness and commitment to God's work.
As we delved into God's Word, we reflected on the unparalleled greatness of the salvation offered through Jesus Christ. The book of Hebrews reminds us that Jesus is superior to all, and the salvation He offers is a gift of grace, not something we can earn through our own efforts. This grace is what sets Christianity apart from other religions, offering assurance and peace to those who accept it.
We were reminded of the danger of indifference towards this great salvation. Ignoring or drifting away from the message of Jesus can have eternal consequences. Therefore, we are called to respond wholeheartedly, embracing the grace plan rather than relying on our own performance.
In conclusion, we are encouraged to live fully devoted to Christ, recognizing the depth of His love and the magnitude of His grace. Whether we are new to faith or have walked with Jesus for years, the call remains the same: to trust in Him and live out our faith with passion and purpose.

Day 1: Community as a Reflection of Christ's Love
Our church community thrives on love and service, exemplified by initiatives like the homeless care kits with Lift Cleveland. This reflects our commitment to living out our faith through tangible acts of kindness and support for those in need. The warmth and love within our community encourage newcomers to connect and engage, fostering a sense of belonging and shared purpose. By partnering with organizations like Lift Cleveland, we extend our reach beyond the church walls, demonstrating Christ's love in practical ways. This commitment to service is not just about meeting physical needs but also about embodying the compassion and grace that Jesus showed during His earthly ministry. [13:10]
"Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others." (Philippians 2:4, ESV)
Reflection: Who in your local community could benefit from a tangible act of kindness today, and how can you extend Christ's love to them in a practical way?
Day 2: Baptism as a Personal Declaration of Faith
Baptism is a profound declaration of faith, symbolizing our identification with Christ's death and resurrection. It is an essential step in the Christian journey, representing a personal decision to follow Jesus and live a life transformed by His grace. The act of baptism is a public testimony of an inward change, a commitment to walk in newness of life. It is a moment of celebration for the individual and the community, as it signifies the transformative power of grace and the decision to embrace the teachings of Jesus. Understanding the theological significance of baptism helps believers appreciate its role in their spiritual journey and encourages them to live out their faith with authenticity and conviction. [15:46]
"Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life." (Romans 6:3-4, ESV)
Reflection: Reflect on your own baptism or the decision to follow Christ. How does this commitment influence your daily actions and interactions with others?
Day 3: Embracing Grace Over Performance
Christianity is unique in its emphasis on grace rather than performance. Unlike other religions that focus on earning favor through good deeds, Christianity offers salvation as a free gift, emphasizing that we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. This grace is what sets Christianity apart, providing assurance and peace to those who accept it. The book of Hebrews reminds us that Jesus is superior to all, and the salvation He offers is a gift of grace, not something we can earn through our own efforts. Embracing this grace means letting go of the pressure to perform and instead resting in the finished work of Christ. [49:59]
"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9, ESV)
Reflection: In what areas of your life do you find yourself striving for approval or acceptance? How can you shift your focus to embrace God's grace instead?
Day 4: The Peril of Spiritual Indifference
Ignoring or being indifferent to the message of Jesus can have serious consequences. We are called to actively engage with our faith, recognizing that drifting away from Christ leads to spiritual peril. The danger of indifference is that it can lead to a gradual hardening of the heart, making it difficult to respond to God's call. The message of salvation is too important to be ignored or taken lightly. Instead, we are encouraged to remain vigilant, nurturing our relationship with Christ and staying grounded in His Word. This active engagement with our faith helps us avoid the pitfalls of complacency and keeps us aligned with God's purpose for our lives. [01:04:42]
"Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it." (Hebrews 2:1, ESV)
Reflection: Are there areas in your spiritual life where you have become indifferent or complacent? What steps can you take today to re-engage with your faith and draw closer to Christ?
Day 5: Living a Life Fully Devoted to Christ
Our response to God's grace should be one of full devotion and gratitude. Whether new to faith or seasoned believers, we are encouraged to continually grow in our relationship with Christ, allowing His grace to shape and guide our lives. Living fully devoted means recognizing the depth of His love and the magnitude of His grace, and letting these truths transform our daily actions and decisions. It is a call to trust in Him wholeheartedly, embracing the journey of faith with passion and purpose. This devotion is not about perfection but about a sincere desire to follow Jesus and reflect His character in all that we do. [01:06:42]
"And he said to all, 'If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.'" (Luke 9:23, ESV)
Reflection: What is one specific area of your life where you can demonstrate greater devotion to Christ today? How can you make this a consistent part of your daily walk with Him?
Quotes
And for them this, I mean the biggest decision any one of us could ever make the biggest news in our lives is when we surrender ourselves to the Lord Jesus Christ and say yes to him. We trust him. We receive his forgiveness. We follow him as our leader and Lord. And we know that our lives today that are filled with grace. We are filled with purpose and we have an RSVP in heaven with a home awaiting for us and that makes that makes what's happening today like every baptism is an evidence of a changed life. The biggest news of today. [00:14:39] (32 seconds)
Interestingly, the Bible every time it mentions baptism, it's only for people who can understand the decision that they've made about Jesus. And so it's an opportunity for older children or for adults to say, this is something that's become personal for me. I like how one guy said it. He mentioned about his own baptism as a child or as a baby. And he said this, he said, my mom and dad cared a lot about me and had me baptized as an infant in their tradition. But I don't remember that very well since I was only a few weeks old. So now I'm able to make this decision personally and be baptized to show my commitment to Christ. [00:16:54] (39 seconds)
I know that among those of us who have gathered here that we're really all over the map spiritually. Some of you are investigating. Some of you are in faith. Really glad to have you here. You're not really sure what you believe, if this book is really trustworthy or is Jesus who he claims to be. Some of you are newer in that relationship. Some of you have been believers for a long time. My heart for all of you, for me, is that we'll continue for whatever days we have left in this planet, we'll continue taking steps forward in our relationship with Christ in a few reasons why. Number one, Jesus is totally deserving of our devotion, right? He's just totally deserving. Second, the rewards of your faith and devotion are way beyond what you and I deserve. [00:44:07] (53 seconds)
We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard. He's talking about in the Scriptures. So that we do not drift away. For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and division and disobedience received its justification, when Christ's word was spoken unto him, punishment, how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. God also testified to it by signs, wonders, and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. [00:46:26] (43 seconds)
Grace is uniquely what sets Christianity apart from every other religion in the world. You see, every other religion is some variation of the same theme. Basically, it's this, that if there is a heaven, only good people go there. There's the Islamic version. There's the Mormon version. There's the Hindu version. Each one has sort of this list of things that you do or sort of a philosophy of that you need to please God more than you displease him. You need to be, in a sense, better making the grade than other people. And each one of them says, in essence, if you do enough good, these five practices, or you do these things or whatever, that you're going to get to heaven. And it sounds reasonable enough, except for this. None of those religions can really tell you, how good you actually have to be. You never really know. So you're always left in this state of insecurity because you don't really know, have I been good enough? And even if you feel like you're a pretty good person, you go, I think I'd probably make the grade. [00:50:16] (69 seconds)
Tim Keller, one of my favorite authors, puts it this way. He says, we are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe, yet at the very same time, we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope. Friends, that's our great salvation. It's all about grace, that the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ is a God of grace. That's who he is. So we won't turn there, but in Acts chapter 15, verse 11, these are in your notes. If you missed those on your way, you can get them on our webpage, graceymay .org. But in Acts... In Acts 15, we read this, the early church makes this declaration, we are all saved the same way by the what? The undeserved grace of the Lord Jesus. [00:52:28] (56 seconds)
But it did cost me about $1 ,300. You know what I did? Because I, I love my son because Mary and I, we, we paid for Andrew what he could never have paid for himself. Like that's grace, right? We did for him what would have been impossible for him to do on his own. Friends, can I just tell you this? We've all scratched the van. Like. Spiritually, right? We've, we've all scratched the van and we can't fix it. We can't. And, and what grace says is God comes in and he sees our sin and a debt that we can't pay. And he says, I'll, I'll pay your debt, a debt that would be impossible for us. And he paid our debt at the cost of the life of Jesus. And Jesus went to the cross. It says to ransom us, to, to, to pay the penalty, to, to pay for us so that we could be redeemed and brought into his family. He did for me and for you, what was impossible for us to do on our own. That's why it's such a great salvation. [00:57:07] (78 seconds)
God saved you by his special favor when you believed. There it is. Can we read that together aloud? God saved you by his special favor when you believed. And you can't take credit for this. It is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done. So none of us can boast about it. Those underlined words there, it's a gift, not a reward. It's a gift, not a reward. That's what grace is all about. And that's why we can call it such a great salvation. [01:04:41] (35 seconds)
