Today marks the beginning of a new journey together as we explore what it means to experience the simply amazing grace of God. No matter where you are in your faith—whether you’re skeptical, new to following Jesus, or have been walking with Him for years—there’s a universal struggle we all share: the feeling of not measuring up. We’ve all faced moments of rejection, failure, or disappointment, and the weight of guilt and shame that follows can be overwhelming. These emotions often drive us to try harder, to set new goals, or to lower our standards just to feel a sense of relief. Sometimes, we even compare ourselves to others, hoping that being “better than” someone else will ease the burden. But deep down, we know these strategies never truly free us from the cycle of guilt and shame.
The root of this struggle is that we all have standards—our own and God’s. While we often fail to meet even our own expectations, God’s standard is perfection, a gap so wide it’s like trying to leap across the Grand Canyon. It’s tempting to wish God would lower His standard, but if He did, He would cease to be just, and justice is something we all long for in the world. God’s standard, though it feels impossible, is actually rooted in His love for us.
The Apostle Paul, writing to early Christians in Rome, made it clear: “There is no one righteous, not even one… for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” No amount of effort, self-improvement, or comparison can bridge the gap between us and God. But the story doesn’t end with bad news. Paul continues, “and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Jesus met the standard we could never reach, offering us His perfection in exchange for our shortcomings. This is the heart of grace: everyone is welcome, everyone gets in the same way—through humility and trust—and everyone can meet the requirement, not by their own merit, but by accepting what Jesus has done.
The invitation is to stop striving, stop trying to prove yourself, and simply embrace the grace that Jesus offers. When you do, guilt and shame lose their power, and you discover the freedom of being fully loved and accepted by your heavenly Father. This is the foundation for a new way of living—one marked not by striving, but by gratitude and grace.
Romans 3:10-12, 23-24 (ESV) — > as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;
> no one understands; no one seeks for God.
> All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
> no one does good, not even one.”
> ...
> for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
> and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
