Embracing God's Word: Lessons from Lot's Story

Summary

In today's gathering, we were reminded of the power and importance of God's Word, as demonstrated by our children in the Bible Buddies program. Their ability to memorize scripture challenges us to do the same, emphasizing that God's Word should be deeply rooted in our hearts. We also took time to pray for those affected by recent storms, asking for God's provision and comfort for those who have lost so much. Our prayers extended to our church's financial decisions, seeking wisdom and faithfulness in using resources for God's glory.

We delved into Genesis 19, exploring the story of Lot and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. This narrative serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of compromise and sin. Lot's lingering attachment to the city, despite knowing its impending doom, reflects our own struggles with worldly desires. The story illustrates that even those considered righteous can fall into grave sin, highlighting the need for daily repentance and reliance on God's grace.

Lot's story is a cautionary tale about the dangers of compromise, which leads to fear, isolation, and ultimately, immorality. His daughters' actions, born out of desperation and a distorted understanding of God's commands, resulted in the birth of nations that would later oppose Israel. Yet, even in this dark narrative, we see God's redemptive power. Through the lineage of Lot's daughters, God brought forth Ruth, a Moabite, who became an ancestor of Jesus. This demonstrates that God can use even the most broken situations for His glory.

As believers, we are called to live lives of repentance, constantly turning away from sin and towards God. We must be vigilant against the subtle encroachments of worldliness, which can lead us away from God's path. Our lives should reflect the transformative power of the gospel, choosing life and upholding the sanctity of marriage as reflections of God's image.

In closing, we are reminded that no one is beyond the reach of God's grace. Whether we are believers struggling with sin or unbelievers seeking hope, Jesus offers redemption and new life. Let us commit to living lives that magnify Christ, sharing the good news with those around us, and being vessels of His love and truth.

Devotional

Day 1: Rooting God's Word in Our Hearts
The power of God's Word is transformative, and it should be deeply rooted in our hearts. The children in the Bible Buddies program exemplify this by memorizing scripture, challenging us to do the same. When God's Word is internalized, it guides our actions and thoughts, providing a foundation for our daily lives. This practice is not just for children but for all believers, as it helps us navigate life's challenges with wisdom and grace. By prioritizing scripture, we allow it to shape our character and influence our decisions, leading us to live lives that reflect God's truth. [11:28]

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God." (Colossians 3:16, ESV)

Reflection: What specific steps can you take this week to begin memorizing a new scripture passage, and how can you incorporate it into your daily routine to let it guide your actions?

Day 2: The Consequences of Compromise
Lot's story in Genesis 19 serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of compromise. His attachment to Sodom, despite knowing its impending destruction, mirrors our own struggles with worldly desires. Compromise with sin leads to fear, isolation, and ultimately, immorality. As believers, we must be vigilant against the subtle encroachments of worldliness, constantly turning away from sin and towards God. This vigilance requires a conscious effort to evaluate our lives and make choices that align with God's will, resisting the temptation to conform to the patterns of this world. [45:23]

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." (Romans 12:2, ESV)

Reflection: Identify an area in your life where you may be compromising with worldly values. What practical steps can you take today to realign this area with God's will?

Day 3: The Necessity of Daily Repentance
Repentance is a vital aspect of a vibrant Christian life, involving a change of mind and turning away from worldly desires towards righteousness. Without genuine repentance, we risk living in fear and isolation, missing out on the joy and fellowship God intends for us. This daily practice of repentance keeps our hearts aligned with God's purposes and opens us to His transformative work. It is a continual process of acknowledging our shortcomings and seeking God's grace to overcome them, allowing us to experience the fullness of life He offers. [49:37]

"Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord." (Acts 3:19-20, ESV)

Reflection: What is one specific sin or habit you need to repent of today? How can you seek God's help to turn away from it and experience His refreshing presence?

Day 4: Witnessing God's Redemptive Power
Even in the darkest situations, God's redemptive power is at work. The story of Lot's daughters, despite its troubling aspects, ultimately leads to the birth of Ruth, a Moabite who becomes an ancestor of Jesus. This narrative demonstrates that God can use even the most broken situations for His glory. It reminds us that no matter how dire our circumstances may seem, God is capable of bringing about redemption and restoration. As believers, we are called to trust in His sovereignty and look for His hand at work in our lives, even when we cannot see the full picture. [01:09:27]

"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." (Romans 8:28, ESV)

Reflection: Reflect on a challenging situation in your life. How can you trust God to bring about redemption and use it for His glory?

Day 5: Living Out the Gospel
As believers, our lives should reflect the transformative power of the gospel. We are called to choose life, uphold the sanctity of marriage, and share the good news with those around us. This involves living in a way that magnifies Christ, being vessels of His love and truth. Our actions and words should be a testament to the hope and redemption found in Jesus, inviting others to experience the same. By committing to live out the gospel, we become active participants in God's mission, spreading His love and grace to a world in need. [01:12:35]

"Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel." (Philippians 1:27, ESV)

Reflection: In what specific ways can you live out the gospel in your community this week, and how can you intentionally share the love and truth of Christ with someone who needs it?

Quotes

1. "The Bible says we're all sinners, that the wage of sin is death, Romans 6.23. It says there's nothing that we can do about that problem. There's nothing that we can do about that problem on our own. But it also shows us that God, loving us so much, he sent his son Jesus to die for us, to take on our sins. And the best part of the Bible's message to us is that it's all a free gift, right? We don't have to be good enough. We don't have to be righteous enough. All we have to do, according to the Bible, is to repent and believe. Turn and believe that Jesus' work, it is sufficient enough to save us from the problem that we've created." 2. "Listen, when we hear of professing Christians falling into serious sin like this, I think we ask ourselves, like, how did it ever get to that point? I mean, if people hadn't made claims of being Christians, it would be one thing. But when they make these kind of claims and when they commit some of the worst kind of sins, it just makes us wonder, right? Guys, as we finish up Lot's account this morning, understand that's Lot's story. If Lot wasn't a believer, if he wasn't declared righteous, we just say, well, that's just the way of this evil world. But instead, when we read about his daughters and when we see what it is they do, we think to ourselves, how did it ever get to that point? How is it that someone considered righteous ever hits this low point?" [41:02] (46 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

3. "I hope that you realize that while many of us are saved by grace this morning, while many of us have been set apart by the blood of Christ, while we're being sanctified by the Holy Spirit, I hope you realize that it is very possible to be a genuine believer today, to have all the securities that come with being a child of God, and yet fall into sins that are just as bad and just as disgusting as those committed by unbelievers. Sins that come with terrible and tragic consequences." [42:01] (37 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

4. "If we live unrepentant lives, it's very possible for us to live in fear of God and not the good kind of fear, not the reverent kind of fear. It's possible for us to isolate ourselves from God and the people of God. Meaning if you refuse to address your sins, it will lead to fear. And in turn, it will lead to your isolation. And listen, every one of us, you have to understand, as 1 John tells us, we're all sinners. And that's true of us, even as believers. We still struggle with sin. We're still tempted by the flesh. And so we should all be constantly repenting daily. Because this is a constant in the life of a Christian. We're to seek repentance daily, understanding the grave consequences if we don't." 5. "Repentance is a change of mind, saying, I recognize that this is bad lord i recognize that this is from the world and i'm going to completely change my mind and follow righteousness which is from who it's changing my mind it's turning it's not going to jesus saying i'm sorry that's not repentance as repentance it's about leaving the world behind and without genuine repentance daily as christians will struggle to find joy will never be satisfied and guys you'll you'll always if you're honest with yourself you'll always be fearful of exposing yourself to god and god's people and what will happen as a result you'll drive yourself to isolation it'll set up this false theology that all you need is jesus and that you can do that minus the church how can you love jesus when it's says the church is his body you just love the head and not the body it's a weird relationship." 6. "Compromise it actually it ends in immorality like that that's the third point it it ends with him actually acting out these again disgusting things i mean i don't know what other word to put on it look at verse 33 through 36 with me again so their plan it succeeds the first night the oldest daughter she gets a lot drunk she lies with him and then the second night the younger daughter she repeats the process listen the result according to verse 36 it's that both daughters become pregnant by their father listen for a lot of us we chalk that up as this them living in sodom being consumed by that culture but as i was studying this for our message this morning this sin of incest according to a lot of scholars it was even abominable or immoral even by sodom's standards of that day and understand these types of sins they don't just happen overnight you saturate yourself in the culture one sin leads to another you begin to compromise you become fearful you become isolated it leads to dysfunctional relationships not just family relationships but just dysfunctional relationships in general." 7. "I mean i think any of us we we hear this story this morning and i hope you agree it's disgusting right you realize that jesus brought restoration to this situation you realize that i know somebody asked me how do you get jesus out of this let me show you the moabites and the ammonites of course we know they would become big problems for israel later on but what we forget is that jesus actually used these two people groups people groups again that came from this disgusting situation he used them to bring about himself well if you know the history of jesus ruth if you know that story she was a moabite right there's a whole book devoted to her story and boaz and israelite became her redeemer he married her and through that marriage it led to king david course we know where that leads to likewise naama and ammonites she would become one of king solomon's wives who gave birth to rahobam and if you're familiar with your bibles and jesus's lineage both of these women both of these people groups both of lot's daughters for that matter are among those that lead to jesus anyway we wouldn't have jesus if it wasn't for this situation god can take anything as disgusting as it might seem and he can use it all for his glory."
