Embracing God's Unconditional Love and Our True Identity

Summary

In today's message, we explored the profound truth of God's unconditional love, a love that is not earned by our actions or achievements but given freely at our worst. Many of us struggle with feelings of unworthiness, believing we must perform to be accepted, both by others and by God. This mindset often leads us into a cycle of trying to earn love and acceptance, which can be exhausting and unfulfilling. However, the good news is that God's love is different. It is a love that meets us in our brokenness and transforms us from the inside out.

We delved into Romans 5, which reminds us that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. This act of love is not based on our worthiness but on God's desire to restore us. It challenges the notion that love must be earned and invites us to embrace a new perspective where we are loved unconditionally. This understanding can free us from the pressure to perform and allow us to love others more freely and genuinely.

The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in assuring us of God's love, helping us to experience it deeply and personally. This love is not just a concept but a reality that can sustain us through suffering and trials. It is a love that calls us to be with and for others, leading them toward Christlikeness. As we embrace this love, we are invited to participate in God's mission to love and serve our communities, bringing hope and healing to a world in need.

Key Takeaways:

3. Transformation Through Love: God's love meets us in our brokenness and transforms us. It calls us to be with and for others, leading them toward Christlikeness. This love is not passive but active, inviting us to participate in God's mission to love and serve our communities. [20:22]

Day 1: Resting in Unconditional Love
God's love is a profound truth that is given freely, not earned by our actions or achievements. Many people struggle with feelings of unworthiness, believing they must perform to be accepted by others and by God. This mindset often leads to a cycle of trying to earn love and acceptance, which can be exhausting and unfulfilling. However, God's love is different. It meets us in our brokenness and transforms us from the inside out. Romans 5 reminds us that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. This act of love is not based on our worthiness but on God's desire to restore us. Embracing this truth can free us from the pressure to perform and allow us to love others more freely and genuinely. [06:11]

Jeremiah 31:3 (ESV): "The Lord appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you."

Reflection: In what areas of your life do you feel the need to earn love and acceptance? How can you begin to rest in the assurance of God's unconditional love today?

Day 2: Assurance Through the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in assuring us of God's love, helping us to experience it deeply and personally. This love is not just a concept but a reality that can sustain us through suffering and trials. The Spirit reminds us that we are seen and loved by God, even in our darkest moments. It is crucial to invite the Spirit to reveal the Father's love to us daily, allowing this assurance to become a source of strength and comfort. By doing so, we can navigate life's challenges with the confidence that we are never alone. [04:51]

Ephesians 3:16-19 (ESV): "That according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God."

Reflection: How can you invite the Holy Spirit to reveal God's love to you today? What practices can you incorporate into your daily routine to experience this assurance more deeply?

Day 3: Transformation Through Love
God's love meets us in our brokenness and transforms us. It calls us to be with and for others, leading them toward Christlikeness. This love is not passive but active, inviting us to participate in God's mission to love and serve our communities. As we embrace this transformative love, we are invited to be agents of change, bringing hope and healing to a world in need. This transformation is not just for our benefit but for the benefit of those around us, as we become conduits of God's love and grace. [20:22]

2 Corinthians 5:17-18 (ESV): "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation."

Reflection: In what ways can you actively participate in God's mission to love and serve your community? How can you be a source of hope and healing to those around you today?

Day 4: Identity Rooted in God's Love
Our identity is rooted in being loved by God, not in our achievements or the approval of others. This understanding provides a stable foundation for our lives, freeing us from the need to seek validation from the world. When we embrace our identity in God's love, we can live with confidence and purpose, knowing that we are valued and cherished by our Creator. This identity allows us to navigate life's challenges with a sense of security and peace, as we are anchored in the unchanging love of God. [26:38]

Galatians 2:20 (ESV): "I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."

Reflection: How does your understanding of your identity in God's love impact the way you live your life? What steps can you take to root your identity more deeply in His love today?

Day 5: Living as Channels of God's Love
When we live in the confidence of God's love, we become channels of His love to others. We can offer love freely, without seeking anything in return, and become a source of hope and healing in a world desperate for affection and identity. This love calls us to be with and for others, leading them toward Christlikeness. As we embrace this love, we are invited to participate in God's mission to love and serve our communities, bringing hope and healing to a world in need. [27:47]

1 John 4:11-12 (ESV): "Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us."

Reflection: Who in your life needs to experience God's love through you today? How can you intentionally be a channel of His love to them, offering hope and healing without expecting anything in return?

Quotes

And we see that often in really uneven relationships that are unmatched, where maybe they haven't put a ring on it, and they haven't said, you know, I just love you, all of you, and I'm going to bring you into my life. And if you feel like that, we've got really good news for you, because we all struggle with those feelings of unworthiness, because we see our own flaws. [00:01:36] (25 seconds)

But today I want to show you something that should sink really deep. And if you just need more time, you need to just read this and walk out of the room and just think about it, do that. But God's love can't be earned at your best if it's given freely at your worst. Just think about that. [00:06:11] (18 seconds)

If he's given his love to you freely at your worst, it's not going to be earned even at your best. Sorry, perfectionists. It's just not going to work. And if we can figure this out, we can be freed from the cycle of trying to earn love and acceptance. Because if you're trying to earn love and acceptance from God, I guarantee you you're doing that in your human relationships as well. [00:06:11] (30 seconds)

For one will scarcely die for a righteous person. We should do a test. Look around the room. Anybody in here you would die for? Don't raise your hand. But look around the room anyway because it would be kind of a fun little thing. Look around the room and say, would I die for that person? Would I die for that person? Would I die for that? And there's some pretty good people in the room. But rarely, scarcely, would one die for a righteous person. But for a good person, perhaps one might dare to die. But God shows his love for us in this. [00:08:05] (31 seconds)

While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. At your worst, Christ dies for you. As sinners, as rebels, he dies for us. So let's just look at a few aspects of this. When? When did he do this? While we were still powerless. While we were still weak. While we were sinners. When we were least diverse, deserving. [00:08:05] (41 seconds)

So we know that he does this, but why? What's the value? What's the worth in me? Some of you have lived the unworthy lie long enough. And you need to say, well, I don't know why he chased me down. Or currently, I don't know why he's chasing me down. But it must be because he thinks I'm worthy. Not worthy of salvation, but worthy of being rescued. [00:11:06] (26 seconds)

It's so rare that a human could experience and offer love like this, this sacrificial love. And so what do we typically do? We just lower our expectations. Maybe, I can't ever be loved. Maybe I can't experience this. But Jesus is right there saying, I want to show you. I want to show you that I have love for you. I do love you. [00:12:26] (29 seconds)

But I guess another question's a little bit pesky. Do you experience love like that? Do you experience a love that's just coming at you, just overflowing to you? Do you experience that his heart is for you and he's not against you, in your weakness and on your worst days, this time tomorrow when you're like, oh God, where are you? Do you believe that he actually does have love for you? Do you experience that love? [00:13:23] (30 seconds)

To experience the love of God, we have to realize that he doesn't call you unworthy anymore. He says, I love you and I want you. I know that word needs to be picked apart a lot more than this, but his love is, and we've used this definition of love for a while now, it's a rugged, affective, it's affection, rugged, affective commitment to be with another person and for another person unto Christ's likeness. [00:19:26] (36 seconds)

I still struggle to know, to get validated, and still ridiculously insecure in so many different ways. But this is a piece, a piece of that. You don't strive for worthiness when you're living in the confidence of His love. And if you find yourself striving for worthiness, just stop. Check yourself, right? Before you wreck yourself.
