Embracing God's Love: Worshiping in Spirit and Truth

Summary

In our continued exploration of Deuteronomy, we delve into the section I've termed "The Laws on the Love of God." This part of Moses' farewell sermon emphasizes the importance of a personal relationship with God, urging the Israelites to love, fear, serve, and walk with Him. This relationship is not about mere rule-following but about a heartfelt connection with the Divine. As we reach Deuteronomy chapter 12, Moses outlines specific laws that reflect this love, particularly focusing on worship.

Moses instructs the Israelites to worship God in the place He chooses, which we know as Jerusalem. This directive underscores the importance of worshiping God in His appointed way, not adopting the practices of surrounding pagan cultures. The danger of repurposing pagan sites for worship is that remnants of their practices might linger, leading the Israelites astray. Moses warns against adopting pagan worship methods, highlighting the extreme practices of these cultures, such as child sacrifice, which are abhorrent to God.

The chapter also emphasizes the joy and community in worship. Worship is not just a duty but a celebration of being in God's presence. The Israelites are encouraged to rejoice in their worship, involving their entire community, including servants and Levites. This communal aspect is vital for maintaining unity among God's people, as they gather in Jerusalem, reinforcing their connectedness and shared faith.

Furthermore, the chapter touches on the significance of sacrifices and tithes, which support the Levites, who have no land of their own. This system ensures that the entire community is cared for, reflecting God's desire for His people to support one another.

In the New Testament context, Jesus' conversation with the Samaritan woman in John 4 highlights the transition from earthly to spiritual worship. While Jerusalem was the appointed place for worship, Jesus reveals that true worshipers will worship in Spirit and truth, transcending physical locations. This shift points to the heavenly Jerusalem, where all believers worship together in unity.

Ultimately, these teachings remind us of the coherence and unity of the Bible's message, encouraging us to worship God in His way, with joy and community, as we look forward to the ultimate fulfillment in the new heaven and new earth.

Quotes

And in the last session we looked at the general way in which God addressed that matter of loving Him and how God wanted to stress that this is a personal relationship. He wants them to fear Him, to love Him, to serve Him, to walk with Him. This is not a mechanical relationship. [00:01:04]

And the first point that Moses wants to make in chapter 12, a specific point, is we are to worship God where He appoints His worship to take place. And he says there near the beginning of chapter 12 that God will choose a place for the people to worship, and that's where the people are to worship alone. [00:01:54]

And so, He wants to say here, "You're to worship in that place I will choose. You're not to worship in the places that the pagans worshipped." That's a very important point because it's always been a temptation of people to take over somebody else's temple and just worship there. [00:05:16]

And Moses specifies the great danger there later in chapter 12 at verse 29. Moses says, "When the LORD your God cuts off before you the nations whom you go into dispossess, and you dispossess them and dwell in their land, take care that you be not ensnared to follow them, after they have been destroyed before you." [00:06:05]

And this remains important for us because this is God saying to us today just as much, "I want you to worship Me in My way, not in your way. I care about My worship. I care about the way in which we relate to each other, and so I don't want you to be creative in worship." [00:07:45]

But do we think enough that God says the very essence of this ought to be rejoicing. Again, it's not checking off boxes, of having fulfilled duties. There is duty, that's important, but it's duty to a purpose. It is like us going to church on Sunday, isn't it? [00:10:05]

And you shall rejoice before the LORD your God, you and your sons and your daughters, your male servants and your female servants and the Levite who is within your town, since he has no portion and inheritance with you. We'll come back and talk about that. [00:11:05]

And so, the Lord is building in to the life of His people structures that are constantly going to be saying to them, "Are you serving Me? Are you serving Me in My way? Are you going to structure your life around Me?" This, I think, is an important relationship to our belief in a Christian Sabbath on Sunday. [00:14:20]

But what is specific here in Deuteronomy is the reminder that the sacrifices, the tithes given to the Lord are given to support the tribe of Levi. You remember, all the tribes are given a part of the land when they take the Promised Land, but Levi has no land. [00:16:04]

And here too, you see the Lord emphasizing the connectedness of the people, how the people are to care for one another, how their hearts are to go out to the brethren, how they're not just to greedily keep all that they have for themselves, but that they are to be sure that the whole people are cared for. [00:17:02]

And so Jesus is saying "God is seeking worshipers so that those who worship Him will worship Him in Spirit and in truth." Those will be the defining characteristics of New Testament worship. It's a people who worship in the power and life of the Spirit and worship according to truth. [00:23:04]

The earthly temple was always a shadow and copy of the heavenly temple, and the great privilege that is ours is we no longer worship in the shadows and copies, but we worship in the reality in heaven. And one day, we'll see that reality coming down from heaven in the new heaven and the new earth. [00:24:19]
