Embracing God's Love: Key Indicators of Spiritual Growth
Devotional
Day 1: Understanding Our Lovedness
Our spiritual journey begins with the profound understanding of how deeply we are loved by God. This love is not just a concept but a reality that forms the foundation of our spiritual life. It is through this sense of "lovedness" that we can truly begin to love others as God loves us. This is a leading indicator of our spiritual health, as it reflects our ability to receive and be transformed by God's love. Engaging with this sense of lovedness requires us to open our hearts to the Holy Spirit, who pours God's love into us, allowing it to shape our actions and attitudes. [03:32]
"For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God." (Ephesians 3:14-19, ESV)
Reflection: How can you intentionally open your heart to receive God's love today, and how might this change the way you interact with others?
Day 2: Cultivating Gratitude
Gratitude is a powerful spiritual practice that aligns us with God's grace and opens our hearts to His Spirit. It is an antidote to despair and discouragement, reminding us of God's presence and blessings in our lives. By cultivating gratitude, we acknowledge the grace that God has bestowed upon us, which strengthens our faith and resilience. This practice is not just about saying "thank you" but about living a life that reflects a deep appreciation for God's continuous work in our lives. [17:00]
"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, ESV)
Reflection: What are three specific things you can thank God for today, and how can you express this gratitude in your actions and words?
Day 3: Embracing Hope
Hope is an essential guiding light in our spiritual journey. It is through hope that we are saved, and it keeps us moving forward even when the outcome is uncertain. The Holy Spirit intercedes for us with hope, sharing in our weaknesses and fueling our longing for purity and Christlikeness. This hope is not passive but active, encouraging us to trust in God's promises and to persevere through challenges with the assurance that God is working all things for our good. [20:25]
"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope." (Romans 15:13, ESV)
Reflection: In what area of your life do you need to embrace hope today, and how can you actively trust God to work in that situation?
Day 4: Longing for Purity
Purity is not merely the absence of sin but a deep craving for the beauty and life of Christ within us. This longing for purity is a leading indicator of our spiritual growth and aligns us with God's plan. It requires us to partner with the Holy Spirit, seeking His guidance and strength to break sinful habits and cultivate a life that reflects Christ's character. This journey toward purity is not about perfection but about a sincere desire to be transformed by God's love and grace. [23:15]
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." (Matthew 5:8, ESV)
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you can invite the Holy Spirit to cultivate purity, and what steps can you take to pursue this longing today?
Day 5: Surrendering Performance-Based Mindsets
To experience true spiritual growth, we must surrender our performance-based mindset and embrace the love and grace of God. This shift in perspective allows us to focus on leading indicators like lovedness, gratitude, hope, and longing for purity, aligning ourselves with God's plan. By letting go of the need to measure our spiritual progress by past performance, we open ourselves to the transformative work of the Holy Spirit, who guides us toward Christlikeness and a deeper relationship with God. [13:13]
"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9, ESV)
Reflection: What is one performance-based mindset you need to surrender to God, and how can embracing His grace change your approach to spiritual growth today?
Sermon Summary
The most meaningful life we can lead is one that fulfills God's plan for us. This requires us to evaluate our spiritual journey and ask ourselves how we are progressing toward this goal. The Old Covenant was performance-based, but the New Covenant is "loved-based," meaning our spiritual life is rooted in understanding how deeply we are loved by God. This love is the foundation for everything else, including our ability to love others. Our spiritual progress should not be measured by our past performance or track record, which are lagging indicators, but by leading indicators that guide us toward Christlikeness.
One of the primary leading indicators is our sense of "lovedness"—how deeply we feel loved by God. This is not about how much we love others but about receiving God's love, which is poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Another leading indicator is gratitude. A heart filled with gratitude is a heart that recognizes God's grace and is open to His Spirit. Gratitude is a powerful antidote to despair and discouragement.
Hope is another crucial leading indicator. It is through hope that we are saved, and it is hope that keeps us moving forward even when we cannot see the outcome. The Holy Spirit groans within us, sharing in our weaknesses and interceding for us with hope. This hope fuels our longing for purity, which is not merely the absence of sin but a craving for the beauty and life of Christ within us.
Finally, we must understand that victory over sin is a lagging indicator. It is not the primary measure of our spiritual health. Instead, we should focus on breaking sinful habits and cultivating a longing for purity. This journey requires surrendering our performance-based mindset and embracing the love and grace of God. By focusing on these leading indicators—lovedness, gratitude, hope, and longing for purity—we align ourselves with God's plan and experience true spiritual growth.

Sermon Clips
The most useful life I can lead is to fulfill the plan that God has for my life. Well, if that's the case, then I must be able to answer the question, how's it going? What's the plan, and how are you doing? How's that working out for you? [00:00:10]
The old Covenant Life is Performance Based. The New Covenant Life is loved based. Loved, not love based, loved based. It's not a word, but I live my Christian Life at the level of my lovedness, loved by God. We love because he first loved us. [00:02:12]
My spiritual life always will remain at the level of my lovedness, whether I fast and pray, whether I make a decision today to be different, whether I weep, whether I fast, whether I have some commitments to read the Bible. [00:03:19]
The New Covenant Life is the father's lap, delivered to us through Jesus Christ and his cross. To me, that is what Jesus says, abide in me. The law came through Moses, but Grace and Truth came to us through Jesus Christ. [00:04:43]
The weighing machine is just going to tell me how things have been in the past. The weighing machine is not going to change my future. Even children can understand that. It's a reflection of all that you've done in your past. [00:06:03]
Our lovedness, this is a measurement red, yellow, green, you know, zero to 100. We have these kind of measurements that we do. What's the measure of my lovedness? I have to make this a key indicator for my life. [00:09:00]
Being filled with the Holy Spirit is to be filled with the love of God so that I feel infinitely loved. Romans 5 verse 8 says that when we were still sinners, and Romans 5 verse 10 says while I was his enemy, Christ died for me. [00:12:18]
Gratitude is another metric that I can look at myself, a measurement that I can look at every day and say, what's my gratitude like? Lord, I'm struggling horribly today. Can I not be grateful for so many things? [00:16:06]
Next leading indicator for me is hope. We cannot lose hope. It's in hope that we're going to get saved. Romans 8 chapter 24, Romans 8 verse 24, it's with hope, and it's very clear in Romans 8:24. [00:19:47]
Longing for purity. Purity will come later on. Purity is a lagging indicator. One Peter, one John chapter 3 verse two and three, we don't know much about what will happen when he appears, but we know this, that when he appears, we will be like him. [00:22:17]
Purity is not freedom from sin. That's what I like about this passage. Purity is not freedom from sin. Purity is a being alive and full of life with God. Purity, freedom from sin is an empty, clean cup. [00:25:10]
I absolutely believe in living a life of overwhelmingly conquering. Absolutely believe in it. That's Romans 8:37. I'm fighting for it, but I'm not going to make that the leading indicator because that discouraged me, that gives me despair. [00:27:38]
