1. "Generosity. What do you think about when you hear that word? Chances are it's different to those around you. So welcome to the next in the spiritual practices in our journey with Christ and our apprenticeship journey with Christ. The practices that if we do them well, or that we even do them a little, will help us to go deeper in transformation. And this week, welcome to the generosity practice. A journey which Jesus himself will guide us on as we look carefully at what he has to say about how we can practice generosity and why we should." 2. "There is more joy in giving than in receiving. We all want to be happy, right? Every person we know is chasing after their vision of a happy life. But so often what most of us find is that the many things that we think will make us happy, just don't. But if we're lucky, or if we live long enough, we come to realize that the good life is often found in the least expected places. Jesus knew that. Because think about it." 3. "The good news is that Jesus' teachings have the potential to set our heart free from money's grip. And to open our heart to true happiness. And so that's why over the next few weeks, we'll look carefully at exactly what he said on this subject. There is more joy in giving than in receiving. We all want to be happy, right? Every person we know is chasing after their vision of a happy life." [27:07] (35 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

4. "Generosity is a practice by which we redirect our hearts and our thinking from a scarcity mindset to an abundant abundance mindset. From fear of not having enough to trusting in God our Father. From worry over our future to total peace at all times no matter what comes. From the endless desire to have more to the enjoyment of what we have. From grasping to gratitude and from misery to joy." 5. "If you have an abundance mindset, you look at God's world and you go, you see a world of abundance. You see God as your Father provider, yourself as his child, and all of life as a gift. You see our Father's world, and you see it's teeming with more than enough for everybody. And as a result, you live with gratitude towards God and your neighbour. And you receive and you give and you do them both with joy. You have a healthy eye." [37:28] (39 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

6. "But if you have a scarcity mindset, you look out at the world and you see a world of lack. There's no Father provider. You're on your own. The world's a dangerous place. Human civilisation is just a fierce battle over scarce resources. You've got to look out for number one because it's a dog-eat-dog world out there. Your vision is focused on what you have. And you're scared to lose it. Or you're focused on what you don't have and what you want. Your heart is consumed by fear and greed." [38:32] (44 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

7. "The good news is that he shows us how to break that hold that money can have on our life, how we can resist the pull of money. Now, as the greatest teacher of all time, Jesus knew that for us to change what we do, to change how we behave, we need to first get it into our heads and then into our hearts and then into our hands and feet. And so here he's teaching on three levels. He's first teaching us how to see God and our life in God's world. It's about what kind of universe we see ourselves in. Where we see the good life is to be found." [40:48] (46 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

8. "And ultimately, it's about who God himself is. Because you see, contrary to what a lot of teaching you might hear, biblical theology of generosity doesn't start with tithing or even with Jesus' command to be generous to the poor. It starts before time and space with God himself. God is our Father. When my kids were growing up, they didn't need to worry about paying the mortgage or paying rent or paying for groceries or paying for going to see the doctor. They had a Father who did all that for them, who provided for them." [41:19] (45 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

9. "And in the same way that practicing gratitude will make you into a more thankful, contented person, practicing generosity will make you into a generous, free person. None of us can flip a switch and remove all fear and greed from our hearts. But we can do things like sponsor a child. Buy someone that cup of coffee. We can give a portion of our income away every month or every week with special attention to God, the church and the poor. And as we practice generosity and make space for God to move in our heart, he will change our whole life from the inside out." [45:56] (50 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

10. "Generosity isn't just about our behaviour, about what we do. It's about our heart. It's about our inner nature. And Jesus also says, and teaches us as apprentices, that it's about the practice of generosity. All the research on generosity says the same thing. That for generosity to make you healthier and happier and all the rest of those things we talked about earlier, it can't be a one time event or even random acts of kindness. It has to be a practice. It has to be a way of life. Something we do constantly and regularly." [45:25] (42 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
