Small Group Bible Study Guide: The Rhythm of Freedom
Bible ReadingLuke 4:16-21 (ESV)> And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
>
> “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
> because he has anointed me
> to proclaim good news to the poor.
> He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
> and recovering of sight to the blind,
> to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
> to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
>
> And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
Mark 2:1-12 (ESV)> (Paraphrased for brevity: The story of the paralyzed man whose friends lower him through the roof to Jesus. Jesus forgives his sins and heals him, telling him to pick up his mat and go home.)
Isaiah 61:1-3 (ESV)> The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me,
> because the LORD has anointed me
> to bring good news to the poor;
> he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
> to proclaim liberty to the captives,
> and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
> to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor,
> and the day of vengeance of our God;
> to comfort all who mourn;
> to grant to those who mourn in Zion—
> to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
> the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
> the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
> that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
> the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.
Observation Questions- In Luke 4, what does Jesus say about the timing of the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy? What word does he use to emphasize when freedom is available? [[01:09:32]]
- In the story from Mark 2, what actions did the paralyzed man’s friends take to get him to Jesus? What does Jesus notice about them before he heals the man? [[01:17:54]]
- According to Isaiah 61, what are some of the specific things the Spirit of the Lord is anointed to do for people?
- In the sermon, what does the “mat” represent for the paralyzed man after he is healed? [[01:32:05]]
Interpretation Questions- Why do you think Jesus chose to declare forgiveness of sins before healing the paralyzed man’s body? What does this say about our deepest needs? [[01:18:13]]
- The sermon says, “Our past does not determine our future—Jesus does.” How does this truth challenge the way people often view themselves or others? [[01:12:41]]
- The friends of the paralyzed man showed “active, desperate, and persistent” faith. What does this kind of faith look like in real life, and why do you think God honors it? [[01:24:28]]
- The preacher said, “Freedom is not about waiting until everything is perfect; it’s about responding to Jesus’ invitation now.” Why is it so tempting to wait, and what are the risks of delaying? [[01:16:16]]
Application Questions- The sermon asked, “What do you truly need to be free from?”—whether it’s your past, pain, shame, or addiction. Is there something specific in your life that you sense God wants to set you free from? What would it look like to bring that to Jesus this week? [[01:12:41]]
- The paralyzed man’s friends didn’t let obstacles stop them from getting him to Jesus. Who in your life needs to be “carried” to Jesus right now? What practical step could you take to help them experience God’s love or freedom? [[01:17:54]]
- The “mat” was a symbol of the man’s past, but also became his testimony. Is there a part of your story—maybe something painful or shameful—that God could use as a testimony to help others? Are you willing to “carry your mat” and share your story? [[01:32:05]]
- The preacher said, “Faith is not just belief—it is action.” What is one area where you need to move from believing to acting? What’s a specific action step you can take this week? [[01:24:28]]
- Jesus declared, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Is there an area where you’ve been waiting for a “better time” to respond to God? What would it look like to say “yes” to Jesus today, not later? [[01:16:16]]
- The Spirit of God (the “ruach”) brings life to what is empty, broken, or formless. Where do you feel empty or broken right now? How can you invite the Holy Spirit to breathe new life into that area? [[01:12:13]]
- The sermon emphasized that as sons and daughters, we are called to live in the rhythm of freedom and help carry others to Jesus. What is one way you can intentionally live out this calling in your family, workplace, or community this week? [[01:20:05]]
Close in prayer, inviting the Holy Spirit to bring freedom and new life to each person and to help the group walk in the rhythm of freedom together.
