Embracing Freedom: Living in Christ's Transformative Power

Summary

Today’s gathering was a celebration of freedom—freedom in our nation, freedom in our lives, and most importantly, the freedom that comes through Christ. We honored those who serve in the military, prayed for our missionaries, and remembered that our calling as believers is to seek and save the lost. The rhythm of our lives, just like Jesus’ rhythm, is meant to be shaped by the Spirit of God, who brings true liberty to our hearts.

Drawing from Luke 4 and Isaiah 61, we saw that Jesus’ custom was to gather with God’s people and declare the good news: the Spirit of the Lord brings freedom to the oppressed, sight to the blind, and release to the captives. This freedom is not just a distant hope, but a present reality—Jesus declared, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” The breath of God, the ruach, brings life to what is empty, broken, or formless in us. Our past, our pain, our shame, and even our addictions do not define us; Jesus does. He invites us to bring all that binds us to Him, trusting that He can breathe new life and purpose into every situation.

We explored the story of the paralyzed man in Mark 2, whose friends tore open a roof to bring him to Jesus. Their faith was active, desperate, and persistent. Jesus saw their faith and responded not just to the man’s physical need, but to his deepest need—forgiveness and belonging. The rhythm of freedom is not passive; it’s a rhythm of faith in action. Sometimes, God uses our past and our pain as a testimony of His grace and power. Like the paralyzed man, we are called to pick up our mat—our story—and walk in newness of life, returning home to live out our purpose.

Freedom is not about waiting until everything is perfect; it’s about responding to Jesus’ invitation now. Whether you are weighed down by your past, struggling with addiction, or simply longing for a deeper sense of belonging, the Spirit of God is present to set you free. As sons and daughters, we are called to live in the rhythm of freedom, to carry others to Jesus, and to let our lives be a testimony of His transforming love.

Key Takeaways

- The Spirit of God brings life and freedom to what is broken, empty, or bound. When we allow God’s breath to move in our lives, He transforms our pain, shame, and past into a testimony of His grace. Our past does not determine our future—Jesus does, and He invites us to live in the fullness of His freedom. [01:12:13]

- True freedom is found in the present, not in waiting for a better moment or a more perfect version of ourselves. Jesus declared that freedom is available “today,” and He calls us to respond now, not later. Delaying our response to God’s invitation only prolongs our captivity; faith acts in the present. [01:16:16]

- Faith is not just belief—it is action. The friends who carried the paralyzed man to Jesus demonstrated that faith sometimes means tearing through obstacles, risking reputation, and persisting when the way seems blocked. God honors active, persistent faith that brings ourselves and others into His presence. [01:24:28]

- Jesus addresses our deepest needs, not just our most obvious ones. While we may focus on what is broken or lacking, Jesus sees the root issues—our need for forgiveness, belonging, and identity as sons and daughters. When we receive His forgiveness, we are set free to live as part of His family, no longer defined by our failures. [01:26:21]

- Our testimony—our “mat”—is not something to hide, but something to carry as a sign of God’s faithfulness. God can use our past, even our pain and shame, to reveal His purpose and power. Walking in freedom means embracing our story and letting it point others to the One who sets us free. [01:32:05]

### Bible Reading

Luke 4:16-21 (ESV)
> And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
>
> “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
> because he has anointed me
> to proclaim good news to the poor.
> He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
> and recovering of sight to the blind,
> to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
> to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
>
> And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

Mark 2:1-12 (ESV)
> (Paraphrased for brevity: The story of the paralyzed man whose friends lower him through the roof to Jesus. Jesus forgives his sins and heals him, telling him to pick up his mat and go home.)

Isaiah 61:1-3 (ESV)
> The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me,
> because the LORD has anointed me
> to bring good news to the poor;
> he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
> to proclaim liberty to the captives,
> and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
> to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor,
> and the day of vengeance of our God;
> to comfort all who mourn;
> to grant to those who mourn in Zion—
> to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
> the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
> the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
> that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
> the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.

Devotional

Day 1: The Spirit Brings Freedom and Life
When the Spirit of God breathes into our lives, even the most broken, empty, or messy places are transformed and brought to life. God’s breath—His ruach—brings freedom from our past, pain, shame, and anything that holds us captive. No matter what you carry, God’s Spirit is able to bring newness and liberty, reminding you that your past does not determine your future—Jesus does. Open your heart to the Spirit’s work and let Him set the rhythm for your life. [01:12:13]

Reflection: What is one area of your life where you need the Spirit of God to breathe new life and freedom today? Invite Him to do so right now.

Day 2: Guarding Your Heart Sets the Rhythm for Living
The condition of your heart determines the direction and quality of your life. When you guard your heart and allow God to shape it, everything you do flows from a place of spiritual health and freedom. Take time to reflect on what you are feeding your heart and how you are exercising your spiritual life, knowing that your heart sets the rhythm for your walk with Christ. [01:07:52]

Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

Reflection: What is one practical way you can guard your heart today—whether by what you watch, listen to, or dwell on in your thoughts?

Day 3: Faith in Action Unlocks Freedom
Faith is not just a belief; it’s an active pursuit that brings others and ourselves to Jesus. Like the friends who carried the paralyzed man, sometimes freedom comes when we step out, take risks, and do whatever it takes to encounter Jesus. God honors faith that moves, faith that rips the roof off, and faith that brings the broken to Him. Don’t let fear of what others think hold you back—let your faith be seen in action. [01:24:28]

Mark 2:1-12 (ESV)
And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic—“I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”

Reflection: Who is someone in your life you can “carry to Jesus” this week through prayer, encouragement, or invitation?

Day 4: True Freedom Is Found in Christ Alone
Freedom is not just the absence of bondage, but the presence of belonging—to be a son or daughter of God, forgiven and set free by Jesus. No matter your past, your pain, or your shame, Jesus declares you forgiven and welcomes you into His family. If the Son sets you free, you are free indeed—your identity is secure, and your future is full of hope. [01:27:03]

John 8:34-36 (ESV)
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

Reflection: What label or lie from your past do you need to let go of today in order to fully embrace your identity as God’s beloved child?

Day 5: Your Testimony and Purpose Flow from God’s Freedom
God uses your past, even your pain and brokenness, as a testimony of His grace and a platform for His purpose. When you pick up your mat and walk in freedom, you become a living witness to others of what God can do. Don’t camp out in the valley—move forward, live with purpose, and let your story point others to Jesus. If you have breath in your lungs, God still has moves for you to make. [01:32:48]

Philippians 3:13-14 (ESV)
Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Reflection: What is one step you can take today to move forward in God’s purpose for your life, using your story to encourage someone else?

Quotes

When you allow the spirit of God to breathe on your life, to breathe on your pain, to breathe on your shame, to breathe on what's broken and what's messy and what in your hearts and in your lives, you come alive. And it's the freedom that God gives you because he cares about your soul. [01:12:18] (16 seconds)  #SpiritBreathesLife Edit Clip

Some of us are so addicted to anxiety. It drives our life fear, the fear of the unknown. I have a list of things that I read over my life in the morning. And one of the things is, I will not be afraid of what I do not know. Because the enemy wants me to be afraid of what, what I do not know. And if I can be afraid of what I do not know, then he can hold me captive from what God knows. [01:14:57] (23 seconds)  #FearNotTheUnknown Edit Clip

Jesus didn't just see what he needed. He saw what his greatest need was, and that was forgiveness. Cause sometimes we, like God, fix this. Fix this. This is broken. This is broken. And God wants to step in and wants you to realize that if we focus on what's broken, we miss the fact that we're a son and we're a daughter. [01:26:21] (18 seconds)  #ForgivenessSeesBeyond Edit Clip

If you are focusing on the messy, broken pieces of your life, that's the enemy. To keep you from the purpose and the power and the sonship and the daughter that he wants you to be. It starts with simply saying, jesus, I believe. [01:29:50] (17 seconds)  #BelieveInJesusPower Edit Clip

You are saved. You love Jesus, but there's something that's keeping you from being that son or daughter. Something that's standing in the way. I want to tell you, like, it's like the roof that they ripped off. And it's in a moment like this that God rips the roof off and says, son, daughter, you are forgiven. You are a son. You are a daughter when you reach to him. [01:38:21] (23 seconds)  #ForgivenSonDaughter Edit Clip

Our freedom is not in an organization. Our freedom is not in anything other than you, Jesus. We recognize that you are. You are the beginning, you are the end. You are the first, you are the last. You are the God of the universe that breathes life into what's not living. And today, God, I pray for freedom Lord to reign in this place. [01:38:57] (26 seconds)  #FreedomInJesusAlone Edit Clip
