Embracing Freedom: Letting Go and Moving Forward
Summary
In our journey through life, we often find ourselves burdened by the baggage of past wounds, toxic relationships, and guilt. This weight can hinder our spiritual growth and freedom. However, the good news is that we don't have to carry this burden alone. Through Christ, we are offered a path to healing, restoration, and hope. This journey is about breaking free from the chains of sin and embracing the freedom that God desires for us.
Understanding the heart of God is the first step. God’s heart is for us to live in freedom, not to be enslaved by sin. Recognizing our personal baggage and the toxic relationships that entangle us is crucial. These relationships often push our buttons and lead us back into old patterns. But Christ’s sacrifice on the cross offers us a way out, a way to live life to the fullest.
To maintain this freedom, we must focus on two key actions: getting rid of the old and putting on the new. This involves surrounding ourselves with godly relationships that encourage and challenge us in our faith. Proverbs 13:20 reminds us that we become like those we surround ourselves with. Therefore, it is essential to have people in our lives who push us towards Godliness.
Additionally, filling our lives with God’s Word and His presence is vital. Freedom is not just about emptying out the bad but filling up with the good. Scripture provides the strength and guidance we need, especially in times of temptation. Jesus Himself used Scripture to counter the devil’s temptations, showing us the power of God’s Word.
Finally, serving and investing in others is a powerful way to sustain our freedom. By serving, we not only help others find their freedom but also strengthen our own faith. Discipleship is a cycle of investing in others, which in turn helps us grow spiritually.

"For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery." (Galatians 5:1, ESV)
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you feel enslaved by past wounds or guilt? How can you invite God into this area to begin experiencing His freedom today?
Day 2: The Power of Godly Relationships
The people we surround ourselves with have a significant impact on our spiritual journey. Proverbs 13:20 teaches us that walking with the wise makes us wise. Therefore, it is crucial to have godly people in our lives who encourage and challenge us in our faith. These relationships help us break free from old patterns and push us towards Godliness. By intentionally choosing to be in community with those who reflect God's love and wisdom, we can grow stronger in our faith and live more fully in the freedom Christ offers. [11:29]
"Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm." (Proverbs 13:20, ESV)
Reflection: Identify one person in your life who encourages your spiritual growth. How can you spend more intentional time with them this week to strengthen your walk with God?
Day 3: Filling Our Lives with God's Word
Freedom is not just about getting rid of the bad but filling up with the good. God's Word provides the strength and guidance we need, especially in times of temptation. By hiding His Word in our hearts, we can resist the temptations that come our way. Jesus Himself used Scripture to counter the devil’s temptations, showing us the power of God’s Word. Immersing ourselves in Scripture allows us to draw closer to God and equips us to live a life of freedom and purpose. [19:32]
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." (Psalm 119:105, ESV)
Reflection: What is one specific Scripture verse you can memorize this week to help guide you through a current challenge or temptation?
Day 4: Serving and Investing in Others
Our freedom is best sustained by serving others. By investing in others, we not only help them find their freedom but also strengthen our own faith. Discipleship is a cycle of investing in others, which in turn helps us grow spiritually. Serving others allows us to experience the joy and fulfillment that comes from living out our faith in practical ways. It also reminds us of the interconnectedness of the body of Christ and the importance of supporting one another in our spiritual journeys. [24:15]
"Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God." (Hebrews 13:16, ESV)
Reflection: Who is one person you can serve or invest in this week? What specific action can you take to support their spiritual journey?
Day 5: Running the Race with Perseverance
Hebrews 12:1-3 encourages us to throw off everything that hinders and run the race marked out for us with perseverance. By fixing our eyes on Jesus, we can endure the challenges and remain steadfast in our faith journey. This perseverance is essential as we navigate the ups and downs of life, continually seeking to live in the freedom that God desires for us. By focusing on Jesus, we find the strength and motivation to keep moving forward, no matter the obstacles we face. [06:24]
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith." (Hebrews 12:1-2, ESV)

Quotes
Through Christ, we are offered a path to healing, restoration, and hope. This journey is about breaking free from the chains of sin and embracing the freedom that God desires for us. Understanding the heart of God is the first step. God’s heart is for us to live in freedom, not to be enslaved by sin. [00:01:04]
The reality of what Jesus did on the cross for you and me is a game changer because we all have our personal baggage, we all have things and toxic relationships that we have, but Jesus came so that we would have that we don't have to deal with it ourselves. [00:02:13]
Hebrews 12:1-3 encourages us to throw off everything that hinders and run the race marked out for us with perseverance. By fixing our eyes on Jesus, we can endure the challenges and remain steadfast in our faith journey. [00:06:24]
There is a getting rid of and it's a putting on of something, so get rid of the old and put on the new. We've heard this talked about in scripture all over the place, but so often we just kind of focus on getting rid of the bad and not focus near enough on putting on the new. [00:07:03]
Proverbs 13:20 says this: He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. What the author of Proverbs is saying is we become like those we surround ourselves with. So our question out of this is who are you surrounding yourself with? [00:11:29]
Freedom isn't just about emptying out, getting rid of the bad; it is actually about filling it up. Because the reality is if we just empty out and get rid of the bad, we still have a void. We need to fill that up with God's presence. [00:19:32]
Hiding that word in our hearts so that we will be reminded when temptation comes—and it will—that we will not fall to it because we know what God says. [00:19:32]
Our freedom is actually best sustained by serving, not all these other things, but serving one another. [00:24:15]
Freedom, our own freedom, is best sustained by serving, but also serving others. You help them find their freedom as well. [00:24:15]
Investing in others actually helps keep us accountable in our faith. I don't know how many Sunday school teachers, small group leaders, youth group leaders, whatever, have shared with me—and I've shared this with other people too—that man, I learn so much as I'm teaching. [00:26:38]
Our freedom in Christ actually grows when it's given away to others. This is how we stay out of the rut of sins that so easily entangle us. We surround ourselves with godly relationships, not neglecting those that are not good, but we need to have godly people in our lives pointing us to Jesus. [00:27:38]
The reality is God gives us the road map to be able to do that, and yeah, we're all going to slip up, but if you have godly friends around you, they're going to come around you and say, "Darren, you're slipping up. You're picking up some baggage. Darren, turn. God has good for you. You can stay out of that rut. I'll pray with you. I'll pray for you." [00:31:55]
