Sermon Summary

We know that a moment is the moment when the cost of standing still or moving backward is greater than the cost of moving forward. We may not always recognize that, but that's what it is. A moment is the moment when the cost of standing still or moving backward is greater than the cost of moving forward. [00:34:42] (18 seconds)

The one thing that's required in uncertainty that is not required in familiarity is faith. It's faith. Now, but that impulse, that impulse to sort of stay in one particular place or to go backwards, it's not a new one. It's an old one. It's not a new human phenomenon. It's not a result of 21st century marketing or anything else like that. [00:36:37] (19 seconds)

Making people feel better in times of uncertainty is not God's highest priority. Making people feel better when they're scared about what's next isn't God's highest priority. Now, the Bible also does say that God draws near to the broken heart if he binds up the wounded. This is what God does. [00:43:31] (19 seconds)

The fear they instill in the Israelites supersedes the memory of the Egyptian oppression. To say it differently, these people, Joshua and Caleb, they're on board. We should take the land. The 10 other guys come back and go, you know what we gotta do is we gotta make the fear of the people so great that it overshadows the memory of the oppression of slavery. [00:45:08] (17 seconds)

The people have said over and over again, we don't want what you're giving us. We don't want it. We don't trust you. We don't want it. It looks too hard. We'd rather die in the wilderness or die in Egypt. Just give us that. And God goes, I'm trying to help you see that's not what you want, but I'm gonna grant you. I'm gonna grant you your wish. [00:51:10] (13 seconds)

At its core, this story is, at least at some level, it's about fear winning over faith, and that's true. And I want to say that you could probably say this is where fear overcame faith. We even saw from the commentary saying, well, look, their fear superseded the memory of their oppression. For sure, it's fear over faith. [00:55:51] (15 seconds)

If God is prioritizing the development or the strengthening of your own faith, then I can guarantee there's a place of uncertainty to which God is calling you, which you're like, I don't know what I should do here. I guarantee it. This moment is no longer a moment where you can stay still. You can't go backwards. [01:00:25] (17 seconds)
