Embracing Diversity: The Church as One Body

The church, the body of Christ, is like a jigsaw. Each person is a Unique Piece created by God with a specific shape and a specific purpose. In 1 Corinthians 12:27, Paul uses the analogy of the body, telling us that the church, the body of Christ, is one body with many parts. [00:32:28]

We are all different. We have different gifts, come from different backgrounds, and cultures. We have different strengths, but we belong to the same body. When we recognize this and live it out day by day, we embody Oneness. Oneness is not sameness. God designed us to be different on purpose. [00:33:24]

God designed us to be different on purpose. Verse 12: The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. Look around; there is no one exactly like you in this room. In fact, there is no one in this world exactly like you. [00:33:42]

God's plan has always been to bring people, different people, together, not to erase our uniqueness but to unite us together in love. We don't have to be the same to belong. We embody the Oneness of God when we live out our god-given distinctiveness, valuing and loving each other for who we are. [00:59:49]

We also learned from Paul that every person is as valuable as everybody else. No one is less important than anyone else in the church. Every single person is needed, and I think we all need to hear that and be reminded of that because I'm pretty sure that all of us have at some time or other felt that we're not important in the church. [00:40:26]

One of the greatest threats to Oneness and unity in the church is spiritual independence, the idea that we can do this, we can walk this Christian life alone, that we don't need others. It's another lie that the world around us tries to convince us is true. [00:47:11]

The Bible teaches us the opposite. The writer of Ecclesiastes puts it this way: 4:9 and 10, "Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble." [00:47:40]

We were never meant to walk this life alone, and especially not the Christian Life. God didn't design us to be independent; he designed us to be interdependent. Again, it goes back to us, each of us having our own strengths and weaknesses. We are stronger when we allow others to use their strengths to help us overcome our weaknesses. [00:48:21]

A really good example of this in action is in the early Church in Acts 2. We read about how the early Believers formed a community, a community of people from different cultures and religions and backgrounds and who spoke different languages. A community where those first Christians shared everything, supported one another, and lived as a true family. [00:52:04]

When someone is hurting, we don't ignore them; we wrap around them. We support them, whether it's practically or with prayer and with Comfort. When someone needs something, we share what we have with them. When someone succeeds, when things go well for someone, we celebrate with them. [00:52:47]

If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad. Let's put our jigsaw together. I'd like someone to bring up, you know, if you, as an adult, don't want to bring it up, you might find a willing child to bring up that piece of the puzzle that you have, and let's see what it is. [00:53:33]

So what does it mean to embody Oneness? It means that we embrace our god-given differences. We don't all need to be the same. We value every person's role. No one is unnecessary. We recognize our need for one another. We can't do it alone. We suffer, and we celebrate together. We are truly one body. [00:59:49]
