Embracing Change: Lessons from Parables and Perseverance
Summary
In today's message, I shared a modern parable inspired by the viral "3-2-1 rule" meme, which serves as a metaphor for the parable of the sower. This story illustrates how different people respond to the same message in varied ways, much like the seeds in Jesus' parable. Some people quickly embrace new ideas but abandon them when results aren't immediate. Others are distracted by competing messages, while a few truly integrate the principles into their lives, leading to lasting transformation. This parable underscores the importance of perseverance and genuine commitment to change.
We then explored the significance of parables in Jesus' teachings. Parables were a distinctive method Jesus used to convey profound truths about the Kingdom of God. Unlike other forms of teaching, parables engage listeners, prompting them to think deeply and reflect on their lives. Jesus' use of parables was not just to impart moral lessons but to reveal deeper spiritual truths and to challenge the listeners to discern and respond to God's message.
Historically, parables were a common teaching tool, but Jesus' extensive use of them was unique. This distinctiveness points to the authenticity of Jesus' teachings and his role in God's redemptive plan. Parables were not merely stories with morals but were meant to reveal the mysteries of God's Kingdom to those willing to listen and understand.
In our contemporary context, we are reminded that God's story continues to unfold today. We are part of this ongoing narrative, and it's crucial to recognize where God is at work in our lives and communities. By reflecting on God's activity, responding with obedience, and sharing our experiences with others, we can participate in God's mission and encourage one another in faith.

Day 1: Perseverance in Embracing Change
In life, we often encounter new ideas and messages that promise transformation. However, not everyone responds to these messages in the same way. Some people quickly embrace new concepts with enthusiasm but abandon them when they don't see immediate results. Others may be distracted by competing messages and fail to integrate these ideas into their lives. Yet, there are those who truly commit to these principles, leading to lasting transformation. This reflects the importance of perseverance and genuine commitment to change. It is through steadfastness and dedication that we can experience true growth and transformation in our lives. [04:25]
Hebrews 10:36 (ESV): "For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised."
Reflection: What is one area in your life where you have struggled to see immediate results? How can you commit to persevering in this area, trusting that transformation will come in time?
Day 2: Engaging with the Kingdom of God
Jesus used parables as a distinctive teaching method to engage listeners and reveal profound truths about the Kingdom of God. Unlike straightforward teachings, parables invite listeners to think deeply and reflect on their lives. They are not just moral stories but are meant to challenge individuals to discern and respond to God's message. By engaging with these stories, we are invited to explore the deeper spiritual truths that Jesus conveyed and to consider how they apply to our own lives. [09:10]
Matthew 13:34-35 (ESV): "All these things Jesus said to the crowds in parables; indeed, he said nothing to them without a parable. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet: 'I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.'"
Reflection: How can you engage more deeply with the teachings of Jesus, allowing them to challenge and transform your understanding of God's Kingdom?
Day 3: The Authenticity of Jesus' Teachings
The historical context of parables highlights their authenticity and Jesus' unique role in God's redemptive plan. Parables were a common teaching tool, but Jesus' extensive use of them was unique. This distinctiveness points to the authenticity of Jesus' teachings and his role in God's redemptive plan. Parables were not merely stories with morals but were meant to reveal the mysteries of God's Kingdom to those willing to listen and understand. [13:06]
Mark 4:33-34 (ESV): "With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it. He did not speak to them without a parable, but privately to his own disciples he explained everything."
Reflection: In what ways can you seek a deeper understanding of the mysteries of God's Kingdom, and how can you apply this understanding to your daily life?
Day 4: Reflecting on God's Activity
Parables reveal the mysteries of God's Kingdom to those willing to listen and understand. They are not just stories with morals but are meant to challenge us to reflect on our lives and respond to God's message with obedience and faith. In our contemporary context, we are reminded that God's story continues to unfold today. We are part of this ongoing narrative, and it's crucial to recognize where God is at work in our lives and communities. [16:39]
Ephesians 1:9-10 (ESV): "Making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth."
Reflection: Where do you see God at work in your life and community today? How can you respond with obedience and faith to participate in His ongoing story?
Day 5: Participating in God's Mission
We are part of God's ongoing story, and it's crucial to recognize where God is at work in our lives and communities. By reflecting on God's activity, responding with obedience, and sharing our experiences with others, we can participate in God's mission and encourage one another in faith. This participation is not passive but requires active engagement and sharing of our experiences to build up the body of Christ. [26:56]
1 Peter 4:10-11 (ESV): "As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ."
Reflection: How can you actively participate in God's mission today? What specific actions can you take to share your experiences and encourage others in their faith journey?
Quotes
A YouTuber created a meme that went viral, short 30-second video that he called the 3-2-1 rule. Three daily practices that were scientifically proven to change your life if you practice them every day for 90 days, 3-2-1. And it went something like this. Third rule, every day, take three servings of whole foods that are unprocessed, three servings of unprocessed foods. So that could be fruit or vegetables or produce or grain or fish or poultry or beef, as long as it's unprocessed. Second rule, first, two times a day, two, the rule of two, practice mindfulness every day. Take a few minutes every day, perhaps morning and evening or noontime and nighttime, something like that. At the end of your workday, perhaps, two moments for five minutes a day and practice mindfulness and just quiet your soul, quiet your heart. [00:00:07] (64 seconds)
Some of that meme fell on eyes that were doom scrolling late at night. And their eyes just briefly registered the diagrams and what this YouTuber was claiming. But even before they understood it, they scrolled to the next meme. They didn't have a chance even to understand what was going on. And the YouTube algorithm or the algorithm of the social media whisked it away forever. [00:01:41] (29 seconds)
Some of that 3-2-1 meme reached people who immediately saw the value of it and they reacted enthusiastically and energetically. That's exactly what I need for my life, they thought. They shared that meme on their social media on their social media and hashtag life hacks forever. Tagged all their friends, posted selfies, eating natural whole foods, salads the next day, doing yoga the next day. They showed screenshots of their phones on airplane mode. [00:02:10] (38 seconds)
And that happened for a few days. But by day four, because there wasn't immediate changes, they hadn't lost the 15 pounds that they thought they would, or they hadn't got that instant boost of energy that they were looking for. Quietly, they abandoned that 3-2-1 rule and they went back to their previous habits. [00:02:48] (20 seconds)
Some of them even started implementing some of these practices. But soon, their social media algorithms got filled up with other attractive trends, other things, other counsel, three-minute ab workouts that promised six-pack abs, ultimate carnivore paleo-keto diets that would transform their bodies, special supplements to promote sleep and reverse aging and improve health. And suddenly, the 3-2-1 principles seemed too easy, too simple to be true. [00:03:20] (38 seconds)
Some of them kept a journal, a daily journal about the progress that they were making each day, tracking their own progress. Some of them began to dig deeper into the research of scientific literature behind these principles that what made them work. Some of them even adapted these principles gradually into their lives. So one person, not just, not three whole meals or three meals of whole foods immediately, but one per week. And then the next week it was two. And then the following week, three meals of whole foods. So they adapted it to their own lives. [00:04:25] (39 seconds)
And this story, this parable that I told is based, of course, on the parable of the sower that we had partially read out to us today. And that's what we're talking about today, parables, Jesus and parables. Actually, it's a very powerful form of teaching because it engages us. It makes us think. It makes us captivated by this story that is being told. And it characterized much of Jesus' teaching. [00:06:55] (33 seconds)
So, what we know from all three synoptic gospels, Matthew, Mark, and Luke, is that the form of parables, the vehicle of the parable, was something that Jesus used very often in his teaching. So, not all of Jesus' teaching, not all of the ways that he spoke was parables. There are speeches in Matthew especially that we know, for example, he teaches on the law, right? He teaches about the Beatitudes. There are these pronouncements at the end of Matthew which are not parable, which are judgment, judgment oracles. So, not all of Jesus' teaching is parables, but a lot of them are. [00:08:22] (40 seconds)
But what's unique about Jesus is that the extent and the frequency which he used parables, it's not just infrequently here and there, but for much of his teaching, nobody used parables as much as Jesus did and as extensively as Jesus did. So, in history, there were parables and Jesus is taking advantage of this fact that there is this form of communication and he transforms it and he uses it extensively in his teaching. [00:10:20] (48 seconds)
And so, it makes sense of Judaism, of his day, it makes sense of his context of his day, and yet, it's quite different. No other rabbi spoke in parables like Jesus did, used them as often as Jesus did. And so, this criterion of distinctiveness. It makes sense of the historical context and yet, it's different. What does that mean? Historically, it means very, it's very likely that it goes right back to Jesus, not something that was created by the church afterwards. [00:12:13] (38 seconds)
If what I'm saying is true, then when we hear Jesus speak in parables, the first thing that we think about shouldn't be, you know, how can I apply this to my life? How can I improve my life? And what is Jesus saying to me to help me along? That shouldn't be the first thing that we hear. It can be something that we hear. And of course, we receive many, much wisdom from listening to Jesus' teaching. [00:20:58] (28 seconds)
