Throughout Scripture, God models a pattern of raising up leaders who mentor successors, ensuring the ongoing health and mission of His people. From Moses and Joshua to Paul and Timothy, we see that faithful leaders invest in others, walk alongside them, and then step aside at the right time so that God’s work continues and even flourishes in new ways. This pattern is not just a historical detail but a living principle for the church today, reminding us that leadership is about stewardship and legacy, not personal power or permanence. [49:02]
Deuteronomy 31:7-8 (ESV)
Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land that the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall put them in possession of it. It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
Reflection: Who is someone in your life you can intentionally invest in or mentor, so that God’s work continues beyond your own efforts?
Every believer, and especially those called to lead, is challenged to walk worthy of the calling they have received—living with integrity, humility, and a deep sense of responsibility before God and others. This means stewarding the Word of God faithfully, seeking His presence, and letting His glory be seen through your life and ministry. The call is not just to serve, but to serve in a way that reflects Christ’s character and honors the sacred trust given to you. [54:58]
Ephesians 4:1-3 (ESV)
I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Reflection: In what specific area of your life or service do you sense God calling you to greater humility or gentleness this week?
True spiritual authority and wisdom come not from personal ambition or cleverness, but from a deep reliance on God’s Word and a willingness to trust Him above your own understanding. The Scriptures are the source of power, guidance, and correction, revealing both strengths and weaknesses, and shaping public life through private devotion. Trusting God’s direction, even when it challenges your own plans, is the path to a straight and fruitful journey. [58:13]
Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
Reflection: What is one area where you have been relying on your own understanding instead of seeking God’s wisdom in His Word? How can you surrender that to Him today?
God calls His people to steadfastness—to remain unmovable and always abounding in His work, knowing that every act of faithful service is meaningful and never wasted. Even when ministry or life feels difficult or unappreciated, God sees and values your labor. The promise is that your efforts, when done in the Lord, have eternal significance and will bear fruit in ways you may not immediately see. [58:54]
1 Corinthians 15:58 (ESV)
Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
Reflection: Where do you feel weary or discouraged in serving God? How can you remind yourself today that your labor is not in vain?
While serving God and His church is a high calling, it is vital to remember that your first ministry is to your own relationship with God and your family. Neglecting personal health or family for the sake of ministry can lead to burnout and imbalance. God desires that you care for your loved ones and yourself, trusting that healthy leaders make for a healthy church and a lasting legacy. [58:13]
1 Timothy 3:4-5 (ESV)
He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church?
Reflection: What is one practical step you can take this week to intentionally care for your family or your own spiritual health, even as you serve others?
Today marks a historic moment in the life of Second Baptist Church Baytown, as we stand on the threshold of a new era. Reflecting on nearly 90 years of our church’s journey—from twelve dreamers in a living room to a vibrant, growing congregation—I am filled with gratitude for all God has done and anticipation for what He will do next. My own story is woven into this tapestry: from my early days in ministry, through seasons of uncertainty and burnout, to the privilege of serving as your senior pastor for the past 28 years. Through challenges and changes, God has been faithful, guiding us to embrace new approaches, shared leadership, and a vision that is bigger than any one person.
One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned is the importance of transition and succession, not just as a practical necessity, but as a biblical pattern. Scripture is full of stories where God raises up leaders who, in turn, mentor and prepare others to carry the mission forward—Moses and Joshua, David and Solomon, Paul and Timothy, and ultimately, Jesus and His disciples. Healthy transition is not about one person’s legacy, but about stewarding God’s work for future generations. Over the past several years, God has made it clear that it is time for me to step into a new role, supporting and encouraging the next leader, while remaining fully engaged in the life of our church.
This transition has not been rushed or taken lightly. It has involved prayer, discernment, and the wisdom of a transition team made up of church members. I am confident in Jeremy’s calling, character, and gifting to lead Second into its next chapter. My challenge to him is to walk worthy of his calling, to steward the Word and the presence of God, to love his family and this church well, and to lead with humility and sacrifice. My challenge to you, church, is to support, pray for, and encourage him as you have me.
As I step away for a two-month sabbatical, I do so with excitement and peace, trusting that God will continue to move powerfully among us. I look forward to returning and seeing the new faces and changed lives that will be part of our story. The best is yet to come, and I am honored to continue serving alongside you all as we pursue God’s mission together.
Ephesians 4:1-3 (ESV) — > I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
2. 2 Timothy 2:2 (ESV)
> and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.
3. Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)
> Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
If you want to grow a vibrant church, look at all the churches around you and do something different. If you want to make a difference in your community, don't be what everybody else is being—be something different. And that's exactly what we did. [00:37:22] (19 seconds) #DareToBeDifferent
It is vital, it is vital that you steward the word of God and the presence of God so that ultimately the glory of God will be seen in and through your ministry. [00:55:56] (17 seconds) #StewardGodsGlory
May your private time in God's word dictate what your public life looks like. You need to be careful. You need to be careful that you do not neglect Kristen, Elijah, Charlotte, Jet Jet, and Addie Mae. Besides Christ, they need to be your first love. And then this church. Don't ever let it get backwards or switched around. [00:57:40] (38 seconds) #BalanceFamilyAndFaith
I encourage you to pray for he and for Kristen and their kids. I encourage you to listen to his voice, because I honestly believe with all my heart that he is going to be listening to the voice of the Lord. And I believe to the best of his ability, he will never speak outside the word of the Lord. And so I hope that you will step up and support and encourage and challenge him just like you did in my tenure here as senior pastor. [00:59:20] (39 seconds) #SupportNewLeadership
