Embracing Awe: The Journey of Character and Beauty
Summary
In today's reflection, we explore the profound concept of "wow"—a word that encapsulates the awe and wonder we should strive to experience in our daily lives. This sense of wonder is not just about appreciating beauty but also about recognizing excellence and goodness in the world around us. Dallas Willard describes beauty as "goodness made manifest to the senses," and this is a call to open our eyes to the beauty and excellence that God has woven into the fabric of creation.
We are reminded of the importance of character development, as illustrated by a story of a friend who chose to respond with grace rather than anger when faced with disappointment. This choice reflects the journey we are all on—to become people of good character with God's help. The main takeaway is that the most significant thing God will gain from our lives is the person we become, shaped by our character.
The sermon draws on the wisdom of historical figures like Walt Whitman, who found immense joy in the simple beauty of nature. This appreciation for beauty and excellence is a character strength that allows us to find joy and meaning in life and connect deeply with others. We are encouraged to live with a sense of awe and wonder, to see beauty in the ordinary, and to seek experiences that challenge our worldview.
To cultivate this sense of wonder, we are given an assessment to reflect on how often we feel awe, see beauty, and seek experiences that challenge us. The experience of awe and wonder can release us from self-preoccupation and open us to the vastness of God and His creation. We are invited to take time to appreciate nature, art, and stories of moral goodness, allowing these experiences to fill us with a sense of "wow."

Day 1: Character Over Outcome
In our journey of faith, the development of our character is more valuable than the outcomes we achieve. This is a call to prioritize the cultivation of virtues such as grace, patience, and kindness over the pursuit of success or personal gain. When faced with challenges or disappointments, choosing to respond with grace rather than anger reflects a commitment to becoming a person of good character. This transformation is what God desires from us, as it aligns us with His will and purpose. The story of a friend who chose grace over anger serves as a powerful reminder of the impact our character can have on our lives and those around us. [01:18]
"Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us." (Romans 5:3-5, ESV)
Reflection: Think of a recent situation where you reacted with frustration or anger. How might you respond differently next time to reflect the character of Christ?
Day 2: Appreciation of Beauty
Recognizing beauty and excellence in the world is a strength that brings joy and meaning to life. This appreciation allows us to connect more deeply with others and find fulfillment in the everyday moments. Beauty, as Dallas Willard describes, is "goodness made manifest to the senses," and it calls us to open our eyes to the wonders of creation. By cultivating an awareness of beauty, we can experience the joy that comes from seeing God's handiwork in the world around us. This perspective enriches our lives and deepens our relationships with others. [03:24]
"One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple." (Psalm 27:4, ESV)
Reflection: Take a moment today to notice something beautiful in your surroundings. How does this beauty reflect God's goodness and creativity?
Day 3: Living with Awe and Wonder
Experiencing awe and wonder can release us from self-preoccupation and help us see the vastness of God. This perspective encourages us to live in alignment with God's eternal kingdom and embrace the beauty around us. Awe and wonder open our hearts to the divine and allow us to experience life with a sense of reverence and gratitude. By living with this mindset, we can find joy in the ordinary and see the extraordinary in the everyday. This approach to life invites us to be present and attentive to the ways God is at work in the world. [05:29]
"When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?" (Psalm 8:3-4, ESV)
Reflection: Reflect on a recent moment when you felt a sense of awe. How can you cultivate more moments of wonder in your daily life?
Day 4: Seeking Challenging Experiences
Actively seeking experiences that challenge our worldview can deepen our understanding of God's vastness and our place in His creation. This openness to new perspectives enriches our spiritual journey and helps us grow in our faith. By stepping outside of our comfort zones, we can gain a greater appreciation for the diversity and complexity of God's creation. These experiences can also help us develop empathy and compassion for others, as we learn to see the world through different lenses. Embracing challenges with a spirit of curiosity and humility can lead to profound personal and spiritual growth. [06:55]
"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." (Romans 12:2, ESV)
Reflection: Identify an area of your life where you feel comfortable and unchallenged. What is one step you can take to seek a new experience that might expand your understanding of God and His creation?
Day 5: Finding Beauty in the Ordinary
Taking time to appreciate the beauty in nature, art, and stories of moral goodness can fill us with a sense of "wow." These experiences remind us of God's presence and the goodness inherent in His creation. By finding beauty in the ordinary, we can cultivate a heart of gratitude and wonder. This practice encourages us to slow down and be present, allowing us to see the divine in the everyday. Whether it's a breathtaking sunset, a moving piece of music, or an inspiring story, these moments of beauty can draw us closer to God and deepen our faith. [09:08]
"The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge." (Psalm 19:1-2, ESV)
Reflection: Consider a routine part of your day that you often overlook. How can you intentionally seek out and appreciate the beauty in this ordinary moment today?
Quotes
I was talking to a friend yesterday who was telling me about somebody who is wanting to grow in character that's what that's the journey we're on together and he had somebody working on a project for him and that person had made a mistake and he was disappointed his initial response was to want to react in anger and be punitive towards this other person out of his emotions and then he had the thought I I want to have a good character I would rather have with God's help a good character than a good outcome than to get my own way and it caused him to respond to this person in a completely different way than he would have otherwise and when I heard that story I felt wow that's the kind of person I want to be that's the kind of Journey that I want to be on because I know I know I know the main thing God will get out of my life is the person I become and that's primarily the character that I form with God's help [00:55:58]

I think about when Moses saw the burning bush in Exodus and his response was I must turn aside and consider this thing and often I'm too busy to turn aside and I do not reflect on the burning bush and then in addition to Nature and addition to Art consider stories of moral goodness I think about a friend of mine who is often quite busy in his work but said what he loves doing most of all is when he goes to the prison and teaches men who are there because they are so hungry to learn and thinking about somebody who has many other things to do that could feed his ego or build his resume but what he loves is to go to a prison and to be with people who are really hungry to learn and devote himself to helping them is an inspirational thing to me [09:46:20]
