Paul is saying to Timothy now be an example in love, and these are the characteristics of that love, of which I am to be an example of the believer. Be an example, he said, in spirit. Now this isn't a reference to the Holy Spirit but it's a reference to the attitude of your life. [00:16:00]

We know people who are mean spirited, and we know people who are very sweet spirited. I receive letters quite often from mean spirited people. You don't have to read very far into the letter until you realize whoever wrote this is really mean-spirited. They're saying cruel cutting things, their hearts are filled with bitterness. [00:16:31]

There are some people who have a critical spirit, and I always feel bad when I see a person develop a critical spirit because, as a rule, when a person gets in it, it's really just a spirit that seems to take over. They become critical of everything, and they just listen to a message carefully, maybe even listen again so that they can find something to criticize. [00:19:46]

Paul said in Romans if any man has not the spirit of Christ, he is none of his. Paul is talking there of the nature of Jesus, and as a follower of Jesus Christ, I should be reflecting the nature of Jesus like the psalmist said, I will behold thy face in righteousness and I will be satisfied when I awake in thy likeness. [00:21:55]

Let your faith in God be an example to others. There is another possible interpretation of the Greek word logu here, and that is faithfulness, trustworthy. Be an example to others in the fact that you are trustworthy as Jesus said, let your yea be yea and let your navy nay, be a man of your word, be trustworthy. [00:23:15]

The Bible tells us of those men who were examples of faith who trusted in God and the things that were accomplished because they trusted in God. Hebrews chapter 11, that classic chapter on faith, speaks of those men who through faith subdued kingdoms, they wrought righteousness, they obtained the promises, they stopped the mouths of lions. [00:24:25]

Paul is encouraging Timothy to purity. Again in his second letter, he will say to Timothy flee youthful lust that drown men's souls in perdition. Was it easy to live a pure life in that culture even as it is not easy to live a pure life in this culture, but that shouldn't negate our living a pure life. [00:27:04]

Throughout the scriptures we are constantly being exhorted to a life on a higher plane. Anybody can live on a low level, follow the crowd, go with the flow, but the Bible encourages us to live above the flow and to go against the flow. [00:28:02]

Peter in his second letter also wrote concerning the Christian character and traits of the Christian life, and he says that there has been given to us exceeding great and precious promises that by these we might be made partakers of the divine nature. In other words, God has given us power in the word and through the word. [00:29:36]

The word of God will cleanse your life and help you to be an example. Jesus said now you are clean through the word that I have spoken unto you. Peter said God has given us great and precious promises that by these we might be able to emulate the divine nature, and that is why we study the word of God. [00:32:48]

May the Lord help each of us to make a resolve to be pure as he is pure, loving as he is loving, good is he as good, kind as he is kind, that we might be an example of the believer in the workplace, in the classroom, wherever we might be, that our lives will become living epistles known and read of all men. [00:38:08]

For whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap, and if we sow to the flesh of the flesh we're going to reap. So ready comes back to the planting of the word into our minds into our hearts instead of the planting of filth and junk because if you plant garbage in, garbage is going to come out. [00:37:23]
