Ecclesiastes opens with the hard word “vanity of vanities.” Solomon calls life under the sun a vapor, a mist, and smoke that rises only to vanish. The human heart keeps asking where meaning, purpose, identity, and satisfaction can be found, yet every earthly answer eventually crumbles and leaves the soul disturbed.
The preacher in Ecclesiastes does not give sweet nothings or false promises. The book gives a high dose of reality like a doctor giving a diagnosis, but it also points to the remedy. God has put eternity into man’s heart, and that eternal longing cannot be satisfied by things created in time and space. Every attempt to make an earthly thing carry the weight of ultimate satisfaction becomes chasing after wind.
Solomon tests wisdom first. His wisdom was greater than any king before or after him, apart from Christ, yet human wisdom only exposed more vexation and sorrow. The wisdom of man is fallen heads instructing other fallen heads, unable to transcend the limits of earth and answer the deepest needs of the soul. Wisdom has gain over folly, just as light has gain over darkness, but wisdom alone cannot keep death from coming.
Solomon then tests pleasure. Laughter, wine, houses, vineyards, gardens, servants, possessions, gold, singers, accomplishments, and every desire of his eyes all come under examination. The cotton candy of earthly pleasure disappears as soon as it hits the tongue. Even building God’s temple could not satisfy Solomon when his heart sought satisfaction in the work rather than in God Himself.
Death brings the experiment to its most grievous conclusion. The wise man and the fool both taste death, the rich and poor both go to the grave, and every inheritance is left in another person’s hands. Death is the great equalizer, and life lived only under the sun cannot bear the weight of ultimate hope.
God, however, gives wisdom, knowledge, joy, and enjoyment to the one who pleases Him. Christ is the resurrection and the life, and those who believe in Him receive more than another moment of life. Christ frees His people from the bondage of self-interest and self-pursuit, giving them a greater purpose for His glory and the good of others. A day in God’s courts is better than a thousand elsewhere because Christ is more satisfying than wisdom, passing pleasures, and life itself.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Earthly satisfaction always evaporates Ecclesiastes calls the best things under the sun vapor because they cannot remain. Achievement, pleasure, possessions, and reputation may give a moment of enjoyment, but none can become a soul’s final resting place. Eternity placed in the human heart keeps exposing the weakness of temporary things. [04:32]
- 2. Human wisdom cannot save the soul Solomon possessed remarkable wisdom, yet knowledge increased his sorrow because it revealed the brokenness of life without repairing it. The wisdom of man can observe the world, but it cannot rise above the curse or give lasting meaning. God’s wisdom is needed because only God knows the beginning from the end. [16:31]
- 3. Pleasure cannot carry ultimate meaning Solomon withheld no pleasure from his heart, but every experiment ended with the same word: vanity. Laughter can become a way to suppress pain, wine can become folly, and accomplishments can become an identity that disappears overnight. Pleasure is a gift in its proper place, but it is a cruel master when asked to replace God. [20:47]
- 4. Death exposes every false security Death brings the wise and foolish, rich and poor, accomplished and forgotten to the same grave. Every legacy built merely under the sun must eventually be handed to someone else. Numbering the days produces wisdom when life is lived before God rather than merely for earthly gain. [34:25]
- 5. Christ gives lasting life and joy Christ is the resurrection and the life for those who believe in Him. His people do not merely receive relief from disappointment, but resurrection unto life and an inheritance that will not perish. His glory frees hearts from chasing wind and gives earthly labor an eternal purpose.
