Ecclesiastes 10

Solomon’s course-correcting wisdom in Ecclesiastes 10 calls God’s people to forsake folly and walk wisely. Ecclesiastes begins with dead flies ruining costly perfume, because “it takes so little to ruin so much.” Folly may look like a small pet sin, one angry outburst, one careless decision, or one private pattern that seems manageable, but it carries a stench that can wreck much good. The wise heart inclines toward the way God says to go, while the fool keeps moving down the road without sense and cannot see what everybody else can see.

Solomon’s calm heart does not retaliate when evil authority rises up. Evil rulers really do put folly in high places and put faithful people low, yet calmness comes from confidence not in an earthly king but in the eternal King, Christ Jesus. Christ reigns at God’s right hand, sees every injustice, and will restore all that sin has shattered. Wisdom therefore leaves vengeance with him.

Solomon’s careful hands pray, plan, and then proceed. The pit digger, wall breaker, quarry worker, log splitter, dull axe user, and late snake charmer all picture the danger of charging ahead without discernment. Zeal is not enough. Wisdom sharpens the tool, assesses the danger, gives attention to what is important, and trusts God with the outcome. The work of human hands needs the favor of God to establish it.

Solomon’s composed mouth gives grace instead of consuming its owner. Wise words are not merely impressive words. Wise words seek God’s purposes for the person standing in front of them. Foolish speech starts in foolishness and ends in evil madness because proud hearts keep multiplying words about things no one can know. Wisdom listens, thinks, then speaks, and remains humble enough to say, “I don’t know.”

Solomon’s kingdom-oriented mind receives food, wine, money, time, and responsibility as gifts to steward for God’s glory. Immature rulers feast when they should lead, and sloth slowly caves in the roof and lets the house leak. Christ, however, is the perfectly wise Savior whose calm heart, pierced hands, gracious words, and fixed mind secured salvation for foolish sinners. The Spirit now cleanses the flies of folly from the heart and conforms God’s people, day by day, into Christ’s likeness.

“Dead flies make the perfumer's ointment give off a stench, so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor. A wise man's heart inclines him to the right, but a fool's heart to the left. Even when the fool walks on the road, he lacks sense, and he says to everyone that he is a fool.
