Bible reading: John 20:1-18 (ESV)
Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes.
But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.
Observation questions
- What specific details did Peter and John see inside the tomb that caused John to believe?
- What was Mary Magdalene’s initial assumption when she saw the stone rolled away and what was her emotional state when she spoke to the person she thought was the gardener? [40:37]
- What was the one thing Jesus said that made Mary suddenly recognize him? [57:11]
- What did the two angels Mary saw look like and where were they positioned inside the tomb? [56:08]
Interpretation questions
- Why was the specific placement of the grave clothes—with the face cloth folded separately—such a significant detail for the disciples to find? What does it tell us about what happened in the tomb?
- Jesus’s first words to his fearful disciples behind locked doors were “Peace be with you.” [51:36] Why would this specific greeting be so powerful and necessary for them at that exact moment?
- The tearing of the temple veil is connected to the new access we have to God. [58:52] How does this event change the way a person can approach God compared to the Old Testament system?
- Mary Magdalene was weeping and did not recognize Jesus until he called her name. What does this moment reveal about how Jesus meets us in our personal grief and confusion?
Application questions
- Peace is described as an unfolding reality that enters where fear and guilt once ruled. [53:30] What is one area of your life—a specific fear, anxiety, or past guilt—where you need to actively receive and live in this resurrection peace this week?
- Because the veil was torn, we have direct access to God without any barriers or need for an intermediary. [58:52] How could this truth change the way you personally approach God in prayer, especially when you feel unworthy or distant?
- Jesus calling Mary by name transformed her grief into worship. [57:11] When have you personally felt known and called by God in a moment of sadness or confusion? How can you be more attentive to hearing his voice in your own life?
- Salvation is described as a simple, immediate response of faith—confessing and believing—rather than a process of moral improvement. [01:18:24] If someone asked you today, “What must I do to be saved?” how would you explain it based on this simplicity?
- The resurrection means we are called to be the church beyond the building, living visibly different lives so our neighbors can see hope. [01:28:48] What is one practical, neighborly act you can do this week that would show someone the hope you have because Jesus is alive?
- We are told we cannot be a victim and a victor at the same time. [48:56] Is there a past hurt or current circumstance you have been allowing to define you as a victim? What would it look like this week to take one step forward in the victory Jesus secured for you?
- The message urges believers to add value to people and build them up, not tear them down. [46:39] Who is one person in your life you can intentionally encourage or build up this week, and what is one specific way you can do it?
