Bible reading
Romans 5:8 (ESV) - but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Luke 23:34 (ESV) - And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.
Matthew 28:5-6 (ESV) - But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.”
Observation questions
- According to Romans 5:8, at what point did God demonstrate His love for us through Christ's death?
- In Luke 23:34, what reason did Jesus give to the Father for why the people should be forgiven? [07:01]
- What two specific commands did the angel give to the women at the tomb in Matthew 28:5-6? [14:15]
Interpretation questions
- Why is it significant that Christ's love was shown "while we were still sinners" and not after we had cleaned up our lives?
- Jesus asked the Father to forgive those who were actively crucifying Him. What does this teach us about the nature of true, godly forgiveness? [07:21]
- The angel told the women "do not be afraid" because Jesus had risen. How does the resurrection directly combat and remove our reasons for fear? [13:52]
Application questions
- Christ's love notices a need and moves to meet it without being asked. [03:48] Is there someone in your life whose need you have noticed, but have been waiting for them to ask for help? What is one practical way you can initiate love toward them this week?
- Forgiveness is described as a freedom for the forgiver, not just the forgiven. [09:13] Is there a hurt you are holding onto, waiting for an apology that may never come? What would it look like to choose forgiveness this week for your own peace and freedom?
- The resurrection means death does not have the final word. [14:15] What current situation feels "dead" or final in your life (a relationship, a dream, a hope)? How can the truth of the resurrection give you fresh courage to face it?
- Because Jesus is alive and dwells in you, you do not need to be afraid. [28:24] What specific fear (of the future, of lack, of failure) most often grips your heart? How can you actively remind yourself this week that the risen Christ is with you in that fear?
- Easter joy is meant to be shared, not hoarded. [33:45] Who is one person in your circle who needs to hear the good news that Jesus is alive? What is a simple, non-intimidating way you could share this hope with them?
