Bible ReadingGenesis 1:26-27 “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”
[39:49]Genesis 2:18 “Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.’”
[41:02]Luke 19:1-10 “He entered Jericho and was passing through. And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, ‘Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.’ So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. And when they saw it, they all grumbled, ‘He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.’ And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, ‘Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.’”
[46:57]Luke 23:32-34 “Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. And Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.’ And they cast lots to divide his garments.”
[49:09]Galatians 4:4-7 “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’ So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.”
[51:13]Revelation 7:9 “After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands,”
[53:29]Colossians 3:9-11 “Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.”
[57:32]Observation questions- In Genesis 1:26-27, what words show that God speaks in a plural way before creating humanity, and what connection is made between that and human belonging? [40:13]
- In Genesis 2:18, what is the first thing in creation called “not good,” and when does that happen in the biblical story?
- In Luke 19:1-10, what details in the story show Zacchaeus acting from a place of distance, shame, or hiding, and what does Jesus do in response? [47:19]
- In Luke 23:32-34, where is Jesus placed as he is crucified, and what does he say there that reveals what holds people together in a broken world? [49:40]
Interpretation questions- If humanity is made in the image of a God who exists in loving community, what does that suggest about why isolation cuts so deeply against human design? [42:15]
- Genesis shows fear, shame, and hiding after sin enters the story. How do those reactions help explain why people can be surrounded by others and still feel alone? [43:31]
- Jesus says that salvation has come not only to Zacchaeus, but to his house. What does that suggest about salvation being bigger than private forgiveness and including restored belonging? [47:43]
- Colossians 3 says old divisions no longer define the people of God because Christ is all and in all. How does that challenge communities built mainly on politics, background, preferences, or shared lifestyle? [56:13]
Application questions- Radical individualism teaches people to put personal needs first, even over the long-term health of family or church. Where is that pull strongest right now—in schedule, conflict, convenience, or commitment—and what effect is it having on real relationships? [37:57]
- Shame trains people to hide behind things like success, failure, image, or control. What is the most common hiding place in this season of life, and what would it look like to let one trusted person know what is really going on? [44:05]
- Jesus finds lost people where they are and moves toward them. Is there any part of life right now that feels more lost than rebellious—confused, stuck, distant, or cut off? What would “coming down from the tree” look like in a practical way? [48:24]
- Forgiveness is the glue of community because hurt is always in the room. Is there a relationship in which bitterness, avoidance, or old injury is quietly keeping distance in place? What would a first step toward forgiveness look like, even if reconciliation is slow? [50:00]
- Real belonging usually requires smaller circles where people are known, not just seen. Does life currently have a few people who know struggles, temptations, hopes, and fears—or mainly a wider circle that knows facts? What may need to change? [01:01:07]
- Community is a practice before it is a preference. Which part of practicing belonging feels hardest right now: priority, chemistry, vulnerability, empathy, or accountability? Why that one? [01:03:06]
- Christ-centered community makes room to extend belonging to others, not just receive it. Who nearby may be overlooked, new, awkward, grieving, or on the edges, and what would it look like this week to move one step toward that person? [01:06:09]
