Ezekiel 37 opens with a hard question: can these bones live? The dry bones show a people who are still walking around, still looking alive, but spiritually dead to God. God brings Ezekiel into that valley because God is making it clear that dead things are not beyond His power. The question reaches beyond Israel and looks at empty seats, young people who have never come into the house of worship, deep-churched people who have drifted away, and churches that are dying out.
God’s presence was always meant to be with humanity. The Holy Spirit did not just show up in the New Testament, because the Spirit was present in the Old Testament for divine intervention. The new covenant gives believers the Holy Spirit within, guiding them through the day. The problem is not the Holy Spirit. The problem is that people have not properly heard what the Holy Spirit is, what faith is, and why God still matters.
The generational divide calls for language that people can hear. The word obedience can push some young people away, while confidence in God can help them understand that God is guiding their lives. Ezekiel’s calling shows that everybody cannot serve in the same way. God gives different callings, and the church loses people when it acts like everybody has to do the same thing.
Ezekiel’s mission also shows that faithfulness does not depend on the response of the people. God never promised Ezekiel that everybody would heed the word, stop criticizing, or quit being defiant. God told Ezekiel not to be afraid of their words. The word of God must still be spoken, even when the opposition is fierce, even when lies fill the air, and even when social media tries to become god for a generation.
The dry bones come together one connection at a time. The foot bone connects to the ankle bone, the ankle bone to the leg bone, and the leg bone to the knee bone. That picture shows how people must be connected, lifted up, and brought into the house of the Lord piece by piece. God restores life. God revives dry bones. God can revive churches, revive faith, and cause those dry bones to breathe again. Christ died on the cross, got up, and remains with His people today.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Dry bones can breathe again
God does not look at spiritual deadness and see a finished story. The dry bones show that God can restore what has lost strength, connection, and hope. The church must not treat empty seats or wandering people as proof that the work is over. [24:24]
- 2. Faithfulness speaks without fear
Ezekiel received no promise that people would listen kindly or agree with the word. God gave him a command to proclaim the word fearlessly anyway. Courage means refusing to let criticism, intimidation, or the spirit of the age silence what God has said. [13:36]
- 3. Every calling does not look alike
God does not make every person serve in the same way. The pressure to copy somebody else’s calling can make people feel like they do not belong. Different gifts can still serve one Lord and help bring life back to dry places. [08:13]
- 4. The Spirit is not the problem
The Holy Spirit still guides, strengthens, and helps believers day by day. The real trouble comes when people do not understand who the Spirit is or why they need Him. Clear witness must help a generation see that social media is not god and that faith in God gives life a different direction. [05:57]
