Paul tells the Ephesians that a change of circumstance means a change of clothes. Carhartts fit farm work, but they do not fit a funeral or a wedding. In the same way, the old way of life does not fit somebody Christ has made new. Ephesians moves from what God has done by grace to what it looks like for believers to live by that grace.
Paul calls believers to remember what they left behind. The Gentile way of life describes people apart from God, ruled by futile thinking, darkened understanding, hard hearts, and desires that never actually fill them. The heart of stone produces the symptoms of sin, because sin does not merely begin with what people do, but with what they believe. Sin promises control and freedom, but it eventually controls and enslaves.
Paul makes a needed distinction between struggling with sin and settling into sin. The struggle itself can be evidence of the Holy Spirit doing battle within a believer. Grace meets believers in that struggle, but grace does not give permission to keep living in the patterns from which Jesus saved them.
Paul gives the big picture: put off the old self, be made new in the attitude of the mind, and put on the new self. The old self is corrupted by deceitful desires, while the new self is created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. The renewing of the mind matters because behavior change without gospel-shaped thinking eventually wears a person out. Identity rests in Christ, not in past failures, feelings, performance, or other people’s opinions.
Paul then brings the truth into ordinary life. Falsehood gives way to truth because believers belong to one body. Sinful anger gives way to righteous urgency, because anger that produces bitterness, division, and harshness gives the devil a foothold. Taking gives way to working and generosity, showing that God turns takers into givers. Rotten words give way to words that are necessary, helpful, timely, and seasoned with grace. Bitterness gives way to kindness, compassion, and forgiveness, because Christ has forgiven His people.
The Holy Spirit grieves when believers put the old clothes back on. The Spirit’s sealing means salvation rests in God’s work, yet obedience still matters deeply. Spirit-empowered sanctification calls believers to keep putting off the old, renewing the mind, and putting on the life Jesus has made available. The fullness of life is not necessarily the easiest life, but it comes through keeping in step with the Spirit.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Sin begins deeper than behavior [43:46] Sin shows itself in words, actions, and patterns, but its root goes down into belief and desire. A hard heart looks to created things for what only God can provide. Real repentance does not merely manage the symptoms; it brings the heart back under the truth of God. [43:46]
- 2. Struggle is not settling into sin [47:17] The presence of temptation does not mean the absence of genuine faith. The battle against sin can show that the Holy Spirit has made a person alive to what once felt normal. Grace gives strength for the fight, while refusing to call bondage freedom. [47:17]
- 3. Renewed minds sustain changed lives [51:04] Putting off old patterns requires more than gritting teeth and trying harder. The mind must be shaped by the holiness of God, the seriousness of sin, the sufficiency of Jesus, and the power of the Spirit. Without that renewed vision, old patterns can feel comfortable simply because they are familiar. [51:04]
- 4. Truth must build up the body [01:01:23] Truthfulness includes more than avoiding direct lies. Exaggeration, hiding responsibility, vague language, and pretending to be fine can all keep people from living honestly before God and others. Christ frees believers from managing their image so that truth can serve love and build up the body. [61:23]
- 5. Forgiveness entrusts people to God [01:11:57] Forgiveness does not deny that wrong has been done, nor does it require every debt to be settled personally. Christ’s forgiveness releases believers from demanding repayment from others. Kindness and compassion become possible because final accountability belongs to the Lord.
