Stuck in Doubt: When Disappointment Turns to Faith

Being stuck can happen in the past, in sin, in fear, and now in doubt. Doubt often starts when disappointment shows up and life does not look the way it was supposed to look. Strong Christian believers are not immune to that. Doubt can hit somebody who has followed Jesus for three days or seventy years, but doubt is not a place to live.

Thomas gets a bad rap when he gets called “doubting Thomas.” John shows Thomas before the doubt, and Thomas has courage. When Jesus talks about going back to Judea, where danger is waiting, Thomas says, “Let us go also, that we may die with him.” That does not sound like a coward. John also shows Thomas as honest. When Jesus speaks about going away, Thomas does not fake understanding. Thomas says, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” That is not unbelief. That is a man willing to admit, “I don’t understand.”

Then everything changes. Jesus is arrested, beaten, crucified, buried. The cross shatters the picture Thomas thought he understood. Disappointment slowly becomes doubt. A 5,000 piece puzzle can be almost finished, but one missing piece grabs the eye. The whole beautiful picture can be sitting there, but attention keeps going to the hole. Life can feel just like that. God has done so much, but one unanswered prayer, one death, one broken marriage, one diagnosis, one dream that never happened can become the only thing a person can see.

Thomas was not with the other disciples when Jesus came. Isolation gave doubt a louder voice. That is what the devil wants. Fear sounds louder alone, doubt becomes more doubtful alone, and lies feel stronger alone. Hebrews calls God’s people to keep meeting together, to stir one another up, and to encourage one another, because hard seasons are not meant to be carried in isolation.

Jesus comes back, and Thomas is there. Jesus does not shame him, humiliate him, or call him a loser. Jesus says, “Put your finger here.” Jesus knows every word Thomas spoke, and he still comes near. Grace always moves toward broken people. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted.

Faith does not mean every question gets answered. Faith means trusting the One who knows when some pieces are still missing. Thomas believed because he saw, but Jesus blesses those who have not seen and yet believe. Thomas does not stay stuck in doubt. History remembers him as a bold missionary who carried the gospel far into India and died for his faith. Doubt did not define him, and doubt does not have to be the end of faith.
