I July 19th, 2026 - Determined to Receive a Double Portion

First Kings 19 places Elisha at the beginning of a call that has not yet produced its fruit. God tells Elijah to anoint Elisha as prophet in his place, but Elisha is still out in the field, plowing with 12 yoke of oxen, just minding his business. The mantle falls before the miracles come. The calling comes before the double portion shows up.

God often calls a person and then brings that person into a time of preparation. The calling does not mean it is time to run ahead, start everything, and conquer the world right away. The Lord uses the in-between time to train, season, disciple, and get a servant ready for what He has assigned. Elisha receives the mantle, but then he assists Elijah. The one called to be prophet first becomes a servant.

Jesus promises that whoever believes in Him will do His works, and even greater works, because He goes to the Father. The greater works are not just impressive miracles, but lost people being saved, lives being changed, and eternity being altered by the work of Christ in the spirit. The Holy Spirit empowers the body of Christ for that kind of kingdom work. The Great Commission is not merely inviting people to church, passing out flyers, or sharing a post. The call is to go and make disciples.

Elisha is determined to be discipled, and Elisha is determined to leave his old life behind. The oxen and the plow are not kept as a safety net in case the prophet thing does not work out. Elisha sacrifices the oxen, burns the plow, feeds the people, and cuts the cord to the old life. There is no plan B. The call of God means no turning back, even when plan A gets hard.

Second Kings 2 shows Elisha determined to complete the journey. Elijah gives him chances to stop at Gilgal, Bethel, Jericho, and the Jordan. Gilgal is new beginnings, Bethel is dreams, Jericho is victories, and the Jordan is death to self. Each place is meaningful, but none of them is the finish line. Elisha refuses to camp out in good places. The double portion comes to the one who stays close, keeps going, and sees the journey through to the end.
