Don't Waste Your Life<br>

Solomon comes to the end of Ecclesiastes with a plain call: do not waste the life God gives. The longing in the soul cannot be satisfied by anything under the sun, even when a person has the wealth, opportunity, and freedom to try it all. God later reveals in Christ what Solomon could only see in part, but Ecclesiastes 11 still gives clear wisdom for life in a fallen world: make the most of the days God gives.

The image of casting bread upon the waters points to generous, intentional investment. Solomon pictures resources sent away with no earthly guarantee of return, yet Proverbs makes clear that generosity toward the needy is lending to the Lord. God sees the gift, even when the ship does not make it, the recipient never knows, or the effort appears to accomplish nothing. Christ later makes the eternal perspective even clearer: treasures laid up in heaven cannot be destroyed, stolen, or lost.

The call to give “to seven or even to eight” pushes generosity beyond what feels safe or sufficient. Time, talents, and treasure all belong to God, and each season gives different opportunities to use them for his kingdom. The greatest human need is not merely literal bread, but the Bread of Life, Jesus Christ. Resources become eternal investments when they help people meet Christ and grow as his followers.

Solomon also confronts the paralysis that comes from demanding certainty before acting. Clouds bring rain and fallen trees stay where they fall, but human beings cannot know all that God is doing. The person who waits for perfect conditions will not sow or reap. God does not require his people to understand every outcome before obedience; God calls them to sow in the morning and keep their hands working in the evening.

The church’s investment in people, ministry, generosity, and a new meeting space carries no earthly guarantee of visible success. God, however, rewards faithful effort, and God may use ordinary acts of service to bring about fruit beyond anyone’s ability to predict. Small, regular, disciplined investments often matter more than one occasional big splash.

Light is sweet because every day under the sun is a gift. Solomon calls people to rejoice in every year God gives while remembering that the days of darkness will be many. Life is a vapor, but Christ has defeated death. Christ gives his people a joy deeper than good circumstances because their names are written in the book of life and their eternal future is secure.
