We Don't Stop Searching

Seeking makes a sharp divide between simply looking at God and actively going after God. Looking can stand still and observe, but seeking has movement in it. Jeremiah 29 says God will be found when the search comes from the whole heart, so the value of being “seekers” is not a church slogan on a wall. It is the way a life keeps moving toward Jesus.

Luke 19 puts that difference on the ground in Jericho. Jesus enters the town, and Zacchaeus wants to get a look at him. Luke’s picture of Zacchaeus carries real baggage: a chief tax collector, very rich, despised, known as a crook, and surrounded by people who already had their opinions about him. His past could have kept him tucked away, convinced that Jesus would not want somebody like him.

The crowd becomes the second problem. Zacchaeus wants to see Jesus, but he is too short, and the people in front of him block the view. The crowd is real, just like grief, disappointment, diagnosis, financial pressure, marriage pain, busyness, or unanswered prayer can be real. The crowd does not mean Jesus is hiding. The crowd means something is standing between a hungry heart and a clear view of him.

Zacchaeus makes the move from looking to seeking. The text says he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore fig tree because Jesus was going to pass that way. The crowd did not disappear. His reputation did not suddenly change. Zacchaeus simply changed his position. Seeking God does not mean every question, pain, doubt, or pressure vanishes. Seeking means running ahead and climbing the tree anyway.

Jesus comes by, looks up, and calls him by name. The crowd knows Zacchaeus by reputation, but Jesus knows him by name. Jesus does not call him by his failure, his sin, his anxiety, his addiction, or his shortcoming. Jesus calls him Zacchaeus. That encounter changes his life because the God being sought is also the God who is seeking.

The son of man came to seek and save the lost. That means the seeker is not chasing a God who is running away. Jesus is already moving toward the lost, the tired, the ashamed, and the blocked. The life of a seeker learns a simple rhythm: pray, read, and practice. Prayer talks to God, Scripture listens for God, and obedience puts his word into motion.
