Mark 8 opens with disciples who have forgotten bread, but Jesus turns their empty basket into a warning about a deeper problem. Jesus says to watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and Herod: religion that looks like God but denies His power, and politics that refuses to be straight up. Yeast only takes a little bit to work through the whole batch, and a little religious performance or worldly thinking can seep into a heart.
The disciples hear Jesus talking about yeast and only think about lunch. Their response shows that spiritual amnesia has already gotten in the boat with them. Jesus asks, “Do you have eyes but fail to see and ears but fail to hear? And don’t remember?” His questions are not because He needs information. His questions make hearts evaluate themselves.
Jesus brings up the five loaves for the five thousand and the seven loaves for the four thousand because He wants them to remember personally what He has already done. The twelve baskets make the disciples carry the evidence away themselves. The seven baskets point to something complete, whole, done, finished. God has done impossible things before, and He has the power to do them again.
Spiritual amnesia makes people forget what God did yesterday while holding tight to the hurt they should let go of. Trauma can cause people to block out pain for self-preservation, but that pain can also cause them to forget God’s goodness. Psalm 103 calls the soul to praise and “never forget all the good He has done.” The mind, will, and emotions do not always feel like praising, but praise remembers when feelings are weak.
Psalm 103 gives six reasons to remember. God forgives all sins, and forgiven people must receive the pardon Christ has already released. God heals all diseases, sometimes in ways that do not fit human expectations, but fully in the glorified body. God rescues life from the pit, crowns the overlooked with mercy and compassion, fills empty lives with real satisfaction, and renews strength like an eagle becoming young again.
Gratitude energizes, while constant complaining, fear, and discontentment drain the soul. God’s presence gives peace, wholeness, power, and purpose that alcohol, relationships, money, career, and approval cannot give. Joy in the Lord begins to restore what trauma, worry, and weariness have worn down. God says to cast cares on Him again and again, because He does not get tired of carrying what people cannot carry alone.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Remember God’s past faithfulness [11:50] God’s past work is not just a memory to admire. God’s past work becomes fuel for tomorrow’s faith test, tomorrow’s bills, tomorrow’s family trouble, and tomorrow’s fear. Faith remembers that the God who came through last time has not lost any power today. [11:50]
- 2. Receive the pardon Christ gave [20:31] Christ’s forgiveness must be received, not merely heard about. A person can keep carrying shame even while Jesus has already released pardon. God is not holding forgiven sin over His children, so self-condemnation must not become a substitute for humility and repentance. [20:31]
- 3. Mercy crowns those from the pit [24:31] God does not just pull people out of the pit and leave them there ashamed. God crowns people with mercy and compassion, even when they were overlooked, broken, or headed toward destruction. Pride forgets the pit, but gratitude remembers the mercy that lifted a life up. [24:31]
- 4. God alone fills empty places [28:52] God identifies the emptiness that keeps reaching for satisfaction in things that cannot hold it. Peace, contentment, and a settled sense of worth come from His presence, not from trying to look like somebody else. God’s blessing reaches deeper than money because it satisfies the soul. [28:52]
- 5. Gratitude renews weary strength [31:54] God renews strength when hearts stop living only off their own emotional energy. Complaint, gossip, and anxiety drain people, but gratitude puts life back into the spirit. God can make a tired life sharp again, give it new vision, and help it soar again.
