Spiritual Stockholm syndrome names the crazy pull to mistake captivity for safety. Paul sees that pull in the Galatians: Christ rescued them from pagan bondage, yet they started running back toward another captor, the legalism of the Judaizers. The chains looked different, but bondage was still bondage. Paul asks, “How turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements,” because rules, rituals, and religious performance can never give what Christ already gave.
The gospel declares that religion does not save, Jesus saves. God does not change His mind, and no new revelation, angel, or updated gospel can improve on the finished work of Christ. Christ fulfilled the law, fulfilled the Sabbath, fulfilled the sacrifices, and nailed the handwriting of ordinances to the cross. Jesus did not die over and over again. Jesus died once, said, “It is finished,” and that was enough.
God’s salvation also means more than a person hanging on to God. God holds His children, knows those who are His, and does not cancel salvation every time failure shows up. Sin does not kick a child of God out of the family, but sin still makes God’s child miserable. The new creature cannot stay comfortable in the old dead ways of the world. Pet sin, presumptuous sin, and cuddled sin never lead to freedom. Sin promises a little pleasure, a little acceptance, and a little peace, but it always brings bondage.
The danger of moving away rests in forgetting the simplicity that is in Christ. Religion says do, do, do. Salvation says done. Religion says it is never enough. Christ says it is finished. God does not move away when His children wander, and the distance between God and His children always reveals who moved. God still calls the wayward child home.
God’s clay finds its way back by becoming moldable again. Clay does not tell the Potter what shape it wants. The tool does not tell the Builder what to make. God uses water, fire, hurt, purging, and even failure to soften what has hardened. God’s people return by following godly leaders who model redemption rather than fake perfection, and by fervently giving love instead of isolating themselves.
Christ gives the way home in plain words: remember, repent, and return to the first works. Satan never offers anything better than what Jesus has already given. Home remains the center of God’s will, where nothing stands between the child and the Savior.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Do not fall in love with chains. Spiritual bondage rarely advertises itself as bondage. Sin and legalism often offer comfort, control, and temporary relief, but both quietly take away the joy of salvation. Christ’s freedom is not found in getting away with sin or earning acceptance through rules, but in resting in what He has already finished. [04:00]
- 2. Salvation rests in God’s grip. God’s children are not kept by flawless performance, but by the finished sacrifice of Christ. Failure brings real consequences and calls for repentance, yet failure does not overpower the hand of God. The child who falls needs to rise again, not live as though grace has run out. [10:06]
- 3. Religion says do, Christ says done. The law, feasts, sacrifices, and ordinances showed humanity its sin, but none of them could remove it. Christ fulfilled what the law pictured and carried the full debt of sin to the cross. A believer does not return to religious slavery when Jesus has already declared the account paid in full. [18:54]
- 4. Be clay in the Potter’s hands. God does not ask His children to dictate the shape of their lives. Hard seasons, correction, and purging can become the means by which the Spirit makes hardened hearts moldable again. The safest place for a struggling believer is not self-direction, but surrender to God’s hands. [25:40]
- 5. Remember, repent, and come home. Returning to God is not made complicated by impossible rituals or religious payments. Christ calls the wandering child to remember where the distance began, repent of the movement away, and return to the first works. God is not playing hide and seek; God is calling His children home.
