Don't Drift: Give Earnest Heed to Your Salvation

Hebrews 2:1 puts a warning right in front of believers: “give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.” The word therefore reaches back into Hebrews 1, where Christ stands eternal, unchanging, and above the angels. Because God is who He is, and because salvation is this great, a Christian cannot live carelessly.

The image of drifting makes the danger plain. A ship without power does not stay put. A boat with a loose mooring goes adrift. An airplane not tied down in the wind will try to fly. In the same way, a genuinely saved, blood-washed child of God does not normally wake up one day and reject God headlong. Things start slipping. Direction gets lost. Purpose gets weak. Neglect takes over.

Proverbs calls for the heart to be kept “with all diligence,” because out of it come the issues of life. Colossians calls those risen with Christ to seek things above and set their affection there. First Timothy calls for continued attention to both life and doctrine. The Christian life requires purposefulness. Time given to God, growth in the Word, prayer, and faithfulness to church do not happen by accident.

Neglect spreads. A long-term choice that pulls someone away from a sound church can become the beginning of deeper drift. Church cannot be replaced by a livestream because believers need fellowship, conversation, accountability, and the “each other” part of the body. When church, Bible reading, and prayer become negotiable, worldly interests can move in like thorns.

Mark 4 shows that the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the lust of other things can choke the Word until a life becomes unfruitful. Fruitfulness matters because Christians possess what the world needs. Great salvation was never meant to stop with personal security. It is meant to bear fruit in the lives of others.

Drift does not require panic, but it does require honesty. The problem must be identified: prayer life, Bible reading, church attendance, or some other point where propulsion has failed. The course must then be corrected on purpose. God does not stand ready merely with a whip; He lovingly rebukes, chastens, and calls His children back to the safe course.
